Questions: In the brief history:
What was the social and economic status of the first settlers to Jamestown? The colonists chose Jamestown Island for their settlement largely because the Virginia Company advised them to select a location that could be easily defended from ocean-going navies of the other European states that were also establishing New World colonies and were periodically at war with England, notably the Dutch Republic, France, and especially Spain. The island fit the criteria, as it had excellent visibility up and down what is today called the James River, and it was far enough inland to miminimisehe potential of contact and conflict with enemy ships. The rest of the ships had limped into Jamestown in August of 1609, their passengers mostly sick or hurt--one ship was said to carry the plague--and provided nothing but extra mouths to feed--400, in fact.
They are very poor, and their social status are very low.
2. What was the "starving time"?

On May 24, 1610, approaching Jamestown, they came upon only 60 gaunt survivors of the "Starving Time"--nearly 90% of the colony had died during the winter.

Look in Physical Site:

Water can be both an advantage and a disadvantage. Some advantages would be that there would be enough to drink, you could go fishing, and the water provides transportation. The disadvantages with having water close to where you lived would be that the crops could get flooded, your house might flood, and the area around the water could flood to. It would be difficult to to settle in Charles Town because the maps were untrustworthy, grow crops because the land in some parts were rockey, and to build a house on the rocky land.…

The Jamestown colony was located near present day James City County, Virginia. Jamestown was the first permanent settlement by the English in what is in current day known as the United States. The location of Jamestown was selected primarily for the fact that it provided a favorable defensive location against any other foreign powers that may have tried to gain control of the colony. John Smith, Robert Hunt along with others provided inspirational leadership for the colonists but even so starvation became a very apparent problem. The hostile relations with the local Native American people and a lack of any profitable exports only made matters worse. Despite this and a horrible winter bearing down on them, the colonists persevered. At the end of the first winter only 60 of the original 214 English colonists survived. (jamestown virginia) The settlers who came over on the initial three ships were not well-equipped for the life they found in Jamestown. In addition to the “Gentry” who was not accustomed to manual or skilled labor, they consisted mainly of English farmers who were not prepared physically or emotionally for the problems that would face them. (old and sold antique digest) Yet despite this they persevered and worked as a team to establish a colony. However, when two ships, crudely constructed in Bermuda, arrived at the settlement with no supplies, when the colonists desperately needed supplies the most, the settlers packed up and abandoned…

The site for Jamestown was picked for several reasons, all of which met criteria the Virginia Company, who funded the settlement, said to follow in picking a spot for the settlement. The site was surrounded by water on three sides (it was not fully an island yet) and was far inland; both meant it was easily defensible against possible Spanish attacks. The water was also deep enough that the English could tie their ships at the shoreline - good parking! The site was also not inhabited by the Native population.…

Joint-stock companies charted by King James I funded the English colonial enterprises. Investors bought shares in the company, and at the end of a specified period received their investment back plus a percentage of the profits of the company. In April of 1606, the king issued a charter to the Virginia Company of London to create a colony in America. In December 1606, three ships set sailed for the Chesapeake and arrived off the coast of Virginia in May 1607. The new settlement was called Jamestown, in honor of England’s King James I. The colony was settled at the edge of a swamp, which was a fertile breeding ground for mosquitoes carrying malaria. The Salt water from the nearby river contaminated the wells that were dug for fresh drinking water. Poor drainage meant the colonists’ own waste occasionally contaminates the water. Many setters died within a year. The Virginia Company misrepresented the Jamestown colony in their promotional pamphlet as an “earthly paradise”. The pamphlet offered opportunities for new settlers to become rich. About one-third of the early settlers were unprepared for the hard life in Virginia and who thought manual labor to be undignified. The Virginia Company settlers searched for silver and gold in the region and spent most of their time searching for the mineral wealth instead of planting crops or reinforcing fortifications. Dissension and lack of firm political leadership undermined the colony as well. The new settlers expelled the local populations of Indians and the Indians came to realize the settlers were not temporary visitors interested in trade, but permanent settlers. The Indians helped the settlers stave off starvations and exchanged food for good with the Indians. During the winter of 1609-1610, there was enormous suffering and high mortality. Known as the “starving time”…

The choice of the Jamestown peninsula; believing it would provide security from the natives, proved to be a poor one. The land “was low and swampy and surrounded by thick woods” (Brinkley 35). They became susceptible to disease such as malaria. For the Pilgrims upon the Mayflower, intending to most likely land around the Hudson River; in what is now New York, instead discovered themselves on the Cape Cod. After some exploration, they found their settlement in Plymouth a land just outside the London Company’s region. The first winter claimed the lives of half their colonist due to malnutrition, disease and…

The first cause of death were the environmental problems that the settlers had to deal with they were all just really bad timing and placement. The island was not situated at a point of great natural food abundance, especially to other locations close by. First, they settled during the start of a seven year drought, tree ring evidence shows that it was the worst drought in 100 years (Document B); this made it hard to grow crops because they need fresh water to grow food, and without water their food would not grow which lead to hunger, starvation, and in most cases death. And when there were crops to tend to the colonist were all too weak and tired to do so. Secondly, their only source of fresh water became brackish (Blanton), brackish means it became unclean with salt. The James river led into the Chesapeake Bay witch is a source of fresh water, when the tides would become high, all the salt water would make its way up the river and in to Jamestown(Blanton). The colonist tried to dig wells but with the bad drought as I stated above, water wasn’t too common, and if they did find water salt intrusions would still happen. Also, the settlers didn’t have plumbing so they would just throw their waste in to the river thinking that it would all just flush away, but the tides would bring the waste right back into their drinking water( Blanton). Historians believe that drinking the brackish water led to diseases, the water was a breeding ground for mosquitos that carried the…

Jamestown’s location on an island was a rather poor decision for many reasons. One of which was the lack of fresh water available to settlers. Since the island was near the coast, it was surrounded by brackish water, a mix of salt water and fresh water resulting in an undrinkable water source around the island. Wells dug on the island were usually shallow and thus suffered the chance of drought or salt water intrusion from the surrounding water.(Doc A) Without a readily available supply of water the colonists were more susceptible to disease because the colonists were not able to replenish the amount of water lost due to disease. Also the salty water made it harder to grow crops such as corn because corn is rather salinesensitive and this limited food supplies which led to starvation among colonists. Another…

1C. 1607- In June of 1606, King James I granted a charter to a group of London entrepreneurs, the Virginia Company, to establish a satellite English settlement in the Chesapeake region of North America. By December, 104 settlers sailed from London instructed to settle Virginia, find gold, and seek a water route to the Orient. Some traditional scholars of early Jamestown history believe that those pioneers could n knew nothing of or thought it beneath their station to tame a wilderness. Recent historical and archaeological research at theot have been more ill-suited for the task. Because Captain John Smith identified about half of the group as "gentlemen," it was logical, indeed, for historians to assume that these gentry site of Jamestown suggest that at least some of the gentlemen, and certainly many of the artisans, craftsmen, and laborers who accompanied them, all made every effort to make the colony succeed.
