Pursuing A Degree In Special Education Essay
I have wanted to be a teacher since I was 4 years old. I was lucky enough to have amazing parents who let me set up a classroom in our living room and leave it set up for days at a time until they realized my passion for teaching wasn’t going away. Then they let me occupy half of our basement and turn it into a classroom. They got me a whiteboard/chalkboard and even bought me desks. In my head I was the best teacher out there; I was all my imaginary students’ favorite teacher. I feel because this dream started so young I will put forth whatever effort needs to be given to be able to become not only my imaginary students’ favorite teacher, but my future ones as well.
A quote from Anthony J. D’Angelo says, “Develop a passion for learning. If you do, you will never cease to grow.” I have such a strong passion for receiving my masters in special education because I thrive to learn more and to possess the knowledge and information to educate people about things they may not know. It is my hope to use this passion to achieve success in not only my career, but in my personal life as well. I had the opportunity to conduct the interview with Mrs. Jamie Gustafson about her life as a special education teacher. Before the interview I was curious what her duties are every day, why she chose the profession and what she finds challenging and rewarding about her job. I also wondered how she communicates and collaborates with other teachers and parents. I believe, it is very important to talk to other teachers about their jobs and reflect on the actions and intentions of professionals, because I can discover my strengths and talents for teaching as well as identify areas in which I want to improve. Developing a professional curiosity can help me become a reflective teacher and is one of the most powerful ways to become a better, effective…

Since I was initially a nursing student when I entered college, I had never considered becoming a teacher. Ever since I can remember, I have always wanted a career where I could serve others, and I always believed that being a nurse would allow me to achieve this goal. Still, I fell in love with the education field the moment I started volunteering and aiding in my aunt's classrooms, which they taught grades TK– 4. I immediately changed my major because it makes me feel extremely fortunate to think that one day I would be able to teach, laugh, and help my kids in the same manner that my aunts do. To begin with, I worked as a student intern, as a tutor for the Advancement Via Individual Determination program for four years.…

After volunteering in my children’s classrooms for years, I decided I would go to school to at least become a teacher’s aid. At the time I had met a teacher, Mrs. Zinno I told her my plans of becoming a teachers aid, she suggested that if I was going to go back to school for two years just to be an aid, why not go for another two years and become a teacher. I did alternative certification to become a paraprofessional or a teacher’s aide. When I completed my paraprofessional certification I still felt that it was just not enough. The words of Mrs. Zinno stuck in my head, I knew if I could complete this I could keep going; I set my goals higher. I attended Tarrant County College and received my Associates Degree; then I thought, “why stop here?” So, I continued to work on an Associates in Education.…

Looking back, it is very obvious that educating students with disabilities has come a long way over the years. Several laws have been put into place, such as Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), and the American Disabilities Act (ADA), to prevent discrimination and ensure that all individuals are receiving the proper education. While these laws have been beneficial, inequalities are still present. One of the biggest, most influential imbalances is disproportionality, the overrepresentation and underrepresentation of specific demographic groups, in special education programs (National Education Association, 2008, p. 1).…

I have a diverse background in education compare to my classmates. I obtained Bachelors of the Arts in Criminal Justice from John Jay College. While attending John Jay I began working as a Paraprofessional for the NYC Department of Education, in a low-income community with students that suffer from Emotional Distress Disorders. has instilled a love and passion to work hard and help these students achieve their educational goals. My students have influenced me to become a Special Education teacher; being able to break down assignments, watching the understanding dawn on their faces, and then seeing them even explaining it to their classmates brings a smile to my face. It is more than the satisfaction of a job well done; it's knowing that they…

I felt teaching was taking too much of my energy and I needed to focus on recovery. There was, however, the passion for teaching that lay dormant. I still find myself thinking about how I would structure a classroom, what kind of paraprofessionals I would supervise, and what new technologies I would implement in my teaching space. I think about lesson plans, accommodations, modifications, and the varied population of students that I have taught over the years. Even when changing careers, I find myself surrounded by people with special needs, varying from severe to mild. I am at my best when working with the segment of the population that has differing abilities. My colleagues have been overwhelmingly supportive of my decision and I concur that attending graduate school for a master’s degree in special education is the right choice for me to reenter the education…
