Topic: The psychology of Criminal Minds
Focus of Research:
Effects of abuse in early childhood
How abuse affects adolescents
Effects of abuse on early adulthood
How abuse at younger ages triggers violence into late adulthood.
Type of Primary Research:
I choose to do a questionnaire because it is helpful to know what students our age know about criminal behaviors and how their minds work. Also about how much they know about the factors that affect them during their lifetimes that lead up to them being criminals. The questionnaire will be for 30-40 adults and students. I will ask older friends and students from Pickering High School to complete the questionnaire to base it on their prime knowledge. The questionnaire contenders will complete the survey with either straight yes or no answers or simple answers or with more of an explanatory answer including detail and listing what is asked of them. The questions will aim at how they think criminals are and how their brain works specifically within the developmental periods. The results from this questionnaire will be included in the final report and it will be compared to how much young adults know about crime and what the reality is.

To what degree do you think spanking is acceptable?
Do you think that spanking is a form of abuse?
Do you agree that children who are aggressive and violent at childhood are most likely to become criminal offenders at adolescence and late adulthood?
What in your opinion makes young children who are abused susceptible to becoming young offenders?
What do you think triggers violence in criminals?
Name the different types of aggression your familiar with.
What in your opinion makes a person a susceptible target for criminals?
Do you think that serial killers are naturally insane or are there some kind of chemical

    Famous serial killers like Ed Gein and Ted Bundy have turned what we only believed to be true in movies and books, into a reality. Ed Gein, an American serial killer and body snatcher, took corpses from local graveyards and fashioned trophies and keepsakes from their bones and skin. After police found body parts in his house in 1957, Gein confessed to killing two women. Nearly 14 years later, Ted Bundy, another American serial killer, committed rape, kidnap, and necrophilia, killing numerous young women and girls during the 1970s. There have been more recent cases of such unspeakable violence such as last year’s Aurora shootings. Inside a Colorado movie theater, a gunman, dressed in tactical clothing, set off tear gas and shot into the audience with multiple firearms, killing 12 people and injuring 58 others. Just a month ago, moments after killing his own mother, a young man fatally shot 20 children and 6 adult staff members at the Sandy Hook Elementary School in the town of Newtown, Connecticut. Psychopaths are people suffering from a chronic mental disorder with abnormal or violent social behavior. Such people have devastating effects on our society, particularly through the most unimaginable crime. It is estimated that the prevalence of psychopathy is approximately 1% in the general population, but 15–25% in the USA adult prison population. Compared to prisoners without psychopathy, psychopathic prisoners have significantly higher rates of violent crime and recidivism (Koenigs, 2012). I can’t help but wonder what it is that acts as the driving force to lead someone to commit such unthinkable behavior. It’s important to understand the differences in psychopaths so we can begin to pinpoint the traits of a psychopath and make sense as to why such criminal behavior can be committed, most importantly psychopaths can teach us a lot about the nature of morality. “Inside the Mind of…

    One thing that correlates to the crimes is child maltreatment. When they child is not taken care of they tend to veer off and find other means of living and making ends meet. Another variable is alcoholism and drug use. A parent or parents is a child’s biggest role model and so are their siblings and any other older siblings. If a child grows up always seeing nothing but alcohol around the house and their family getting high off of pills and smoking than they are naturally going to take that lifestyle in and think that it is normal and okay and they will think that everyone else around them lives the same lifestyle.     Tests have shown that the nervous systems of psychopaths encounter less fear and anxiety than normal people. Tests have proven that low arousal levels have caused these individuals to project impulsive thrill-seeking behavior. Proven by one experiment, a group of healthy individuals and a group of serial killers were given the task of finding which lever out of four turned on a green light.     A good portion of the reasons why serial killers have the urge to kill is due to different mental illnesses. An example of this would be Antisocial Personality Disorder (ASPD). Symptoms of this mental illness include “being abused, manipulation of others, disregarding right and wrong, often lying, a lot of times being violent, not learning from bad behavior”, and the list goes on and on (Mayo Clinic Staff).     Apparently, all serial killers are murderers, but not all murderers are serial killers according to an article titled "Serial Killers: Nature vs. Nurture." There are major differences between murderers and serial killers and according to this article,“ Serial killers are only driven by instinct and a desire to kill. Due to these sexual desires and the need to fulfill their arousing fantasies it often urges these individuals to murder those who are complete strangers. Therein lays the fundamental difference.” Now, the article discusses the fact that typically a serial killer’s profile is that of a white male between the ages of 20 and 30 who commonly target their victims within the area of their living space. Note that not all serial killers fit this profile and this is apparent through history, as women have been known to develop into serial killers as well. Psychotics and psychopaths can have personalities in common, such as dull emotions, but they tend to diverge regarding whether he/she can mentally stay within reality. Psychopaths are cunning and manipulative, but they do not experience hallucinations nor delusions. They do not hear the voices of strangers in their minds nor do they hold inaccurate theories about the world. However, no matter his/her sex, age, or race a serial killer is a serial killer. Thus, the question remains: Was it nature or what it nurture? Could it be both? It is evident that nurture takes the principal role in the creation of a serial killer.     Mental instability, or any other mental condition, could lead to serial killers to kill. The Zodiac Killer is a perfect example of this. Even though he was never caught, many think that he could have had some sort of mental instability. In the notes that the Zodiac sent to the San Francisco police, it showed his instability. In the book Serial Killers & Mass Murderers: Profiles of the World’s Most Barbaric Criminal written by Nigel Cawthorne, a writer that studied at the University of London.     Dennis Nilson stated "a mind can be evil without being abnormal". If this is the case, then what makes a serial killer tick? The definition of a serial killer is; a series of two or more murders committed as separate events usually, but not always, by one offender standing alone. (Brookes, 1988) Over the years, many murderers have been given this term. From the early days of Jack the Ripper, to the most recently publicized case of "the sniper", all have different motives and reasons to the crimes that they commit.
