Prostate Cancer Prostate cancer is a disease that only affects men. Almost all prostate cancers are malignant tumors(adenocarcinomas). Prostate cancer begins when cells in the prostate gland start to grow uncontrollably. cid _prod (2016a) . The prostate is a gland found only in males. The prostate is very important, and its function is to produce fluid which protects and enriches the mans sperm. 1 out of every 7 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer during his lifetime. According to the most recent data of all stages of prostate cancer in men the 5-year relative survival rate is almost 100%. From the 10 year-relative the survival rate is 98% and 15 year survival rate is 95%. These rates are based on men diagnosed and first treated from the years five, ten, and fifteen years span . The local stage is when there is no sign that the cancer has spread outside of the prostate. Around 4 out of 5 prostate cancers are found in the local stage . The five year-relative survival rate for this stage is the highest and nearly 100% . The regional stage is when the prostate cancer has spread to nearby areas. This includes stage III and stage IV when it hasn't spread yet to distant parts of the body and formed any tumors or spread nearby to lymph nodes . The relative five-year survival rate in the regional stage of prostate cancer is still nearly 100%. The last and most deadly stage of prostate cancer prognosis is the distant stage. Meaning some prostate cancers are slow-growing and do not affect life expectancy, while some spread through other parts of the body before being diagnosed . Treatments in medicine are always changing and developing . New treatments are always discovered.
