Pros And Cons Of Animal Testing
Animal Testing is the force experimentation on animals against their free will, usually leading to pain, discomfort, or malnourishment. An average of 115 million animals every year are tested for scientific and commercial experiments (crueltyfreeinternational.org). These tests are not only inhumane, but the experiments are also unreliable, unnecessary, and not safe. The testing of animals has been around for centuries, using animals, in hope to find a cure for human diseases. According to procon.org, “Research on living animals has been practiced since at least 500 BC… Physician-scientists such as Aristotle, Herophilus, and Erasistratus performed the experiments to discover the functions of living organisms.” These living organisms, which …show more content…
However, there are alternatives to animal testing that work just as well or even better than animal testing. With today’s advanced technology, Artificial human skin is now available for testing like EpiDerm and ThinCert (procon.org). These scientifically advanced tests are not only more reliable than animal experimentation, but they also waste less resources than animal tests. As stated on procon.org, “In vitro (in glass) testing, such as studying cell cultures in a petri dish, can produce more relevant results than animal testing because human cells can be used.” From this information researchers can begin to understand the fact that animals are no longer needed to figure out human diseases. Other than in glass and artificial skin (procon.org), plants can and have been used for testing (Woods, 25). Some plants that have been used are beans for eye medicine in the EyeTex factories, pumpkin for skin medicine in SkinTex facilities, and other foods that have been proven to help resist cancer (Woods, 25). With all of these alternatives, why risk the lives of animals when there are other ways to help that are more reliable and safer that regular painful animal

An estimated 26 million animals are used every year in the United States for scientific and commercial testing. [2] Proponents of animal testing state that it has enabled the development of numerous life-saving treatments for both humans and animals, while opponents state that animal testing is cruel and often yields irrelevant results because animals are so different from human beings. Many different animals are used in scientific studies such as rabbits, mice, primates, dogs, cats, pigs, and cows. Animal testing, is also known as animal experiments in the act of using non-human animals in research, to develop projects or scientific experiments. Statistics show that each year, there are millions of animals such as cats, dogs, mice, rats, ferret, hamsters and monkeys that experience mental and physical torture due to scientific research. Although most people agree that animal testing is horrible and cruel, there are few who this is it necessary to find new medicines. During the experiments, the animals are forced to inhale or sallow large amounts of test substances. Which are often found to be poisonous and toxic. The largest concern, is that animals are being used in experiments and not humans. Meaning that the results might or might not be useful for all the humans. Million of animals are suffering from poor conditions of living, and then to…

Early on, the elimination of animal testing was unfeasible because it was the only available source. However, technology advancements in the late 20th and early 21st centuries have introduced alternative methods that are often cheaper and more relevant to humans. William Russell and Rex Burch first introduced the 3R’s of animal research in 1959. These R’s stand for the reduction, refinement, and replacement of the use of animals in research and testing. Many alternative methods that have come forward follow these ethics. More than 40 alternatives have been validated and approved world-wide with many more under way. There are a variety of cell-based skin tests, called EPISKIN, EpiDerm, and SkinEthic that can be used to assess the safety of drugs, chemicals, and cosmetics on humans. Organs-on-chips contain human cells grown in a system that mimics the structure and function of human organs. Researchers have also developed computer models that predict and show the ways drugs react to the human body. According to the former scientific executive of Huntingdon Life Sciences, animal tests and human tests agree 5-25 percent of the time, while cell culture toxicology, another alternative form of animal testing, agrees 80-85 percent of the time.…

Every year millions of animals are subjected to horrible unethical experimentations in order to advance medical science. Dogs, cats, monkeys, mice, and other animals are kept in dark rooms in cages while being exposed to various toxic and poisonous substances daily in order to test how the substance may react in humans. These poor creatures suffer from inhumane treatments and are denied any form of happiness, and these experiments should cease and alternatives should be used instead. Animal testing is a cruel and ineffective medical practice that produces unreliable results and those laboratories should use safer alternatives that will provide more accurate results.…

In fact, if animals aren’t used for medical research certain vaccines for rabies, hepatitis and other diseases wouldn’t be curable (Trull). However, many people argue that the human anatomy differs from that of animals. Nonetheless, animals and humans still share common features. For example, monkeys, just like humans, share the same fundamental use of hormones to counteract infections, which has helped scientist improve research (Trull). For the people who doubt animal testing should go to hospitals and look at patients who have survived from illnesses and diseases, because if it had not been for animals lives wouldn’t be…

It is the aspect of animals testing that many view as a major negative against the practice, as it seems that the animal died in vain because no direct benefit to humans occurred. Many animals cannot handle or take the same medication as humans, most the surgeries that are operated on animals are just too strong for an animal to take so they end up dying or sick for the rest of their lives.
