Title:
AirAsia investment to expand. Research question:
To what extend does AirAsia’s decision to purchase another 100 planes is a good investment when there is a new competitor in Malaysian’s aviation industry?
Introduction:
AirAsia is a Malaysian low-cost airline headquartered in Kuala Lumpur. It has been named as the world's best low-cost airline and a pioneer of low-cost travel in Asia. AirAsia group operates scheduled domestic and international flights to 78 destinations spanning 25 countries. Its main hub is the Low-Cost Carrier Terminal (LCCT) at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA). Recently, AirAsia Group is buying another 100 Airbus planes for US$9.4bil as it steps up its expansion in the core markets of Malaysia, Thailand and Indonesia and pushes ahead into the new markets of Japan and the Philippines. However, the entering of Malindo Air in the Malaysian’s aviation industry as a new low-cost airline might be a threat to AirAsia. Now, the entry of Malindo Air would enhance competition with other low-cost carrier that operates in Malaysia especially Air Asia. Before the entry of Malindo Air, Malaysian’s aviation sector is monopolised by Malaysia Airlines and Air Asia. Now the market needs to be shared by the three airlines thus will increase in excess capacity which could lead the airlines having loss. Thus, is it appropriate AirAsia’s decision to purchase another 100 planes when the market may be turning?
Research objective: 1- Comment on strategies of Air Asia’s market expansion by using Ansoff matrix. 2- Analysing Air Asia’s Investment appraisal 3- Using the PEST analysis to analyse the external environment that may affect Malindo Air. 4- Determine the strength, weakness, opportunities and threats of Malindo Air to allow a clear view of the airline position and a view of the problems that it is facing. 5- Evaluating the perception of consumers toward Air Asia and its rival by using the positioning map.

According to a study generated by IBISWorld on the Annual Global Airline industry revenue for 2014, figures were indicated at $745bn with over 9,000 businesses worldwide. From such figures we can infer that global competition in this industry is inevitably high. Such competition is present and can be seen in examples like existing Airline companies such as Etihad and Emirates which offer similar services, packages and prices to its customers. What can be noticed however with the Airline industry is that the threat of new entrants is quite low - this is in large part due to the fact that the Airline business involves a billion dollar investment and high capital (Porter, 2008). It is also a service which although used frequently, in one customer’s life-time; the extent of use may vary depending on many situational factors such as seasonality, business or leisure purposes and so forth. In Australia, the same notion holds in terms of new entrants to the marketplace. Major players in the Australian Airline network include Qantas, Virgin and Jetstar.…

Our goal is to utilize a handy breathalyzer to interpret the BAC (Blood Alcohol Concentration) of the user. Then based on state laws in which the user resides, the unit will send a signal to the ignition switch to allow the operation of the vehicle if the user is legally sober. This will be a wireless transmission from the breathalyzer to the remote switch with a transmission distance of up to 100 feet. The South East Asian region offers huge opportunities for the entrance of new low-fare airlines. Analyst revealed that low fares are often the deciding factors for budget-conscious travelers in Southeast Asia. This region represents a huge population, which offers low-fare airlines a vast market with promising profits. China’s huge population alone offers a great market for low-fare airlines. Demand may differ for low-fare services between the South East Asian region and in North America and Europe. In Europr and America customers the Asia Pacific region low airfare is the main driving force for choosing an airline carrier. In European and American customers usually look for a more traditional airline which offers factors such as comfort, food, cleanliness, etc… Governments pose a significant obstacle to the expansion of low-fare airlines in Asia. Government airline regulations in Asia prohibit competition to take place amongst airline carriers, allowing the government opportunities to be manipulated and bribed. The manipulation of the government by competing airlines can limit the growth for alternative airlines to offer service to Asia-Pacific regions, leading Asia to have few choices amongst air carriers.…

    Power of Suppliers

Another force is power of suppliers. Power of the suppliers is important as it will affect the industry. In airline industry, the power of suppliers is quite high since there are only two major suppliers which are Airbus and Boeing hence there are not many choices to airline industry. Nevertheless, the global economic crisis has limited the new entrant and also reducing the upgrade of planes in the immediate future. However, both suppliers provide almost same standard aircraft and hence the switching to Air Asia is low. The supplier of airline companies is the fuel supplier, food supplier, merchandise supplier and aircraft supplier. Other supplier like foods supplier and fuel supplier, the term of the supply must be based on the market condition. Hence, the supplier cannot increase too much of its price or risk losing long term business with the aircraft companies. Besides that, Airasia has high switching costs. Most of Airasia’s aircraft are Airbus models. Previously, the company used Boeing models, which they lease it and the company had since phased out most of the models and replace with Airbus. If Airasia is to switch to Boeing again, then the cost will be high. This is because training cost for employees to suit the aircraft features must be provided. Furthermore, the technology used by Airbus is the most advanced, thus Airasia must rely to the Airbus’ engineers to do maintenance of the aircrafts and seek advices. if the Airbus does not to cooperate with Air Asia, Air Asia will not have no suppliers to do the maintenance.nThus, bargaining power of suppliers is…

One of the most important factors to consider is the nature of the airline industry. It is very unpredictable and with that prone to high uncertainty levels. The demand is volatile and the capacity is largely fixed which leads to a number of issues in need of being assessed. One of those is the jet fuel price volatility which impacts the airline industry dramatically. The constant shifting around of fuel costs, largely based on political developments which are uncontrollable, cause great uncertainty for most of the airlines, including Malaysia Airlines. Even with seemingly stable prices in the past couple of months, the jet fuel price index shows that the jet fuel price has more than tripled in the last 14 years.…

Sweet Potato - common name applied to a perennial, trailing herb of the bindweed family. The plant, which is native to tropical America, is cultivated on sandy or loamy soils throughout many warm regions of the world, and exists as an important food staple in a number of countries.
