Drexel’s technological requirements for many of its classes create a very tech savvy environment that is advertises as one of its selling points, these demands on students can be a hardship when not provided with an adequate power source for their PCs.

Every year we look forward to walking into our tech centers. We look forward to using the brand new equipment. Thousand dollar Macintosh computers lined up in perfect rows. But rarely do we wonder (or appreciate) where these new things come from. All of the tools we need are funded by an act that was passed in 2006 called the Carl D. Perkins Career and Technical Education Act. This funds a vast majority of the secondary and postsecondary career and technical education programs, and is vital to the development of ourselves as the next generation of workers in todays society.…

Will Bury, an enterprising inventor, is convinced that soon everyone will be reading or listening to everything digitally, including books that have been mostly available in hard copy. He knows that there are books on CD, but these are relatively expensive and have been recorded using human readers. He also knows that there is technology that can transform the printed word into audio, but the sound is somewhat inhuman. Will plans on speeding up the transformation with a proprietary technology he has developed and patented. This technology takes the printed word for text materials and creates a file with the option of reading it digitally or listening to it with a realistic synthetic voice. Will knows that he has free access to books no longer under copyright protection, and he figures he can pay a royalty fee of $5 per title for copyrighted books that will greatly expand his catalog. So far, he has limited himself to English-language books but is working on a language translation option as well.…

With the Simulation software, it is relatively easy to change the features or price point of a product and have the simulation software predict the market share that the product would attain in the market. This I hope to achieve by using the computer to emulate a real world situation. It is time based, and takes into account all the resources and constraints involved, as well as the way these things interacts with each other as time passes. Simulation also builds in the randomness that would be seen in real life. For instance, it doesn’t always take exactly 5-minutes for a customer to be served and a customer don’t always arrive every 15-minutes. This means that the simulation really can match reality, so when one make changes to the simulation; it will demonstrate exactly how the system would behave in real life.…

In, “Schools embracing, not banning electronic devices”, Lisa Reicosky shows readers that the “B.Y.O.D” program that is spreading to schools around the Canton area may not be the smartest idea to hit local high schools. The article that appeared in “Canton Rep” on August 15, 2012 explained the several benefits of this “Bring your own device” program that allows students to use laptops, smart phones, tablets, etc., in the classroom for strictly learning purposes only. Along with the program comes many trials and tribulations. The “B.Y.O.D” program may stick to the everyday lives of high school students, or it may not.…

Lastly I do have to admit that not all of the rules would be too bad. I mean a charging station and bulletin board is clever but can’t we have another separate space for things like that? Maybe an empty room for a charging area or even just finding empty space on the walls for bulletin boards. My school does have charging rooms for students who are unable to charge laptops at home but we also still have lockers. So those would be nice to have just in addition to the lockers we already do have.…

Teachers should make sure they are using technology in the classroom correctly to help students benefit academically. Students should use their time wisely in the classroom when assignments requiring the use of technology are assigned. This problem is not a problem that can be solved overnight. School districts and members of the community should work to find the necessary funding needed to help bring the access to technology to students’ homes. This will require partnership with business such as the local cable, phone, or internet provider. The school district and community should first be focused on providing internet service at a discount rate to household first. When that service has been provided, finding to a way to make technology devices accessible for students’ household should be next focus. Most importantly funds should be allocated for households who cannot afford any sort of internet service, regardless of the price and availability. These households should not be disregarded because they do not have the…
