Technology Access and the Diverse Student There are many issues that affect the education of diverse students in the United States. However; in South Carolina, an issue that many diverse students are faced with is the implementation of technology in the classroom. Technology is often viewed as a tool that will help enhance learning, prepare students for the future, and as a tool to explore knowledge. This may be true for some students, but not all students feel the same. The problem that local school districts are being faced with is that with the incorporation of technology in school, comes the lack of adequate funding needed for students to take the technology home and utilize it in the home environment. Teachers should make sure they are using technology in the classroom correctly to help students benefit academically. Students should use their time wisely in the classroom when assignments requiring the use of technology are assigned. This problem is not a problem that can be solved overnight. School districts and members of the community should work to find the necessary funding needed to help bring the access to technology to students’ homes. This will require partnership with business such as the local cable, phone, or internet provider. The school district and community should first be focused on providing internet service at a discount rate to household first. When that service has been provided, finding to a way to make technology devices accessible for students’ household should be next focus. Most importantly funds should be allocated for households who cannot afford any sort of internet service, regardless of the price and availability. These households should not be disregarded because they do not have the
