Proposal for Starting a Music Program
Purpose of this report is to persuade school of humanities and student's activities office to expand music program in Penn State Harrisburg in general both by having broader curriculum in music program and relevant facilities so students can prepare themselves to pursue degree in music in University Park and by expanding musical activities that students can actively participate.
The Problem and its Relevance
Currently in Penn State Harrisburg, there are all together eight music courses, five of them being music theory and history classes and three of them being guitar lessons, vocal class and campus choir. There is no musical extracurricular activity available for students whose schedule does not allow them to take those courses or students who have different interests. Though there are demands for more efficient music program and musical activities, as we can observe from students who are looking for place to practice piano regularly and place for their band to practice or who are taking private lessons outside of school. Various educational researches including one from MENC: The National Association for Music Education shows that students who participate in musical activities have better grade, higher self esteem, and higher satisfaction in their school life. Strengthened music program and activities can not only satisfy many students' desire to continue their extracurricular activities but also can help student to focus more in their school work. The extracurricular musical activities will also be great outlet for stress especially for dorm students who might be looking for something to do during their free time in campus.
