Property Crime Strategic Plan
(Introduction)
The President of The United states is faced with many difficult tasks. One such task is the mission of keeping the citizens of this country safe from harm, crimes, and individuals that pose a threat to our way of life. Currently, one of the most prevalent, and most difficult crimes to fight against is terrorism. The war on terror is a central concern for all United States citizens, lawmakers, and of course, the President of the United States. In addition to terrorism, there are other types of crimes that need to be addressed. Property crime is one such crime. In contrast to terrorism, property crime is an easier crime problem to address. This is an easier crime in which to establish a strategic plan that would put an end to such crimes. There are four types of crimes that are classified as a property crime, they are burglary, theft, motor vehicle theft, and arson. Property crimes involve the taking of money or property and are high volume crimes with the target often being cash, electronics, such as televisions, power tools, cameras, and jewelry. According to the statistics from the F.B.I’s Preliminary Semiannual Uniform Crime Report, January - June of 2012, “The number of violent crimes reported by law enforcement for the first six months of 2012 increased 1.9 % over the figures from the same time period in 2011. Property crimes rose 1.5%.” To further break down this figure, there was a 1.9% increase in larceny-theft crimes, 1.7% increase for motor vehicle theft, and 0.1% increase for burglary. Prevention is key in lowering and then ending property crime. Having a strong police presence and visibility is key in stopping property crime before it occurs. The second recommendation that I have for a strategic plan to lower and ultimately end property crime is to initiate more neighborhood watch programs in conjunction with community policing. In each of these steps, the local police would be the main individuals responsible for achieving these steps. The neighborhood watch programs and the community policing would begin in larger cities first and then continue to smaller cities. Local authorities will help to organize and educate the residents involved in the neighborhood watch programs and the community policing programs.
The next step of my proposed plan is to pass legislation that embarks tougher penalties upon individuals who are found guilty of committing a property crime. Law makers need to send a message that anyone who commits such a crime will face a harsher punishment. The will deter potential offenders from engaging in such types of crime. Lawmakers essentially agree that crime prevention is needed and effective. Passing a law that enacts harsher punishment for those found guilty of such crimes can be
