J415/CJE4444 Section 01 Crime Prevention
Instructor Charles Walerius April 25 ,2015

Crime prevention strategies has been exercised in various different ways, for different targeted groups, through various programs and departments. In this assignment I will describe strategies in my local area, potential outcomes and possible negative outcomes.

Neighborhood Block watch
Neighborhood Block watch program provides a sense of security, by reducing the fear of crime through creating a community with connected and trusted neighbors. The Neighborhood Block watch program is a citizens’ organization that works closely with law enforcement to educate its members about crime prevention and prompt and accurate reporting of suspicious persons and activities to authorities, in hopes to provide a safe place for for families to live.
The benefits of a block watch include: reducing the risk of being a crime victim being that participants are taught how to take preventative measures , being better prepared to respond to suspicious activity because the block watch program educates members on how to report suspicious activity to law enforcement. Other benefits would be knowing your neighbors and lastly, keeping participants informed about criminal activity information to better prepare them on how to stop it in their neighborhood.
Negative outcomes of a neighborhood block watch could be trusting participants and sharing your schedule within the program but an actual neighbor is a criminal who takes advantage and utilize their schedules to commit burglaries in their community. Other negative outcomes could be Unnecessary reportings by residents to authorities, residents feeling as if they have power because of their participation in the program and forming a pact or negative attitude towards other neighbors.

D.A.R.E
Drug Abuse Resistance Education (DARE) is a program taught in elementary schools,by uniformed law enforcement officers which focuses on teaching the skills needed to recognize and resist social pressures to use drugs. It contains lessons about drugs and their consequences, decision-making skills, self-esteem, and alternatives to drugs. Teaching techniques include lectures, group discussions, question–and-answer sessions, audiovisual materials, workbook exercises, and role-playing.

The DARE programs have come under much scrutiny recently. Many DARE program evaluations conducted across the country have not found that the program has much success in reducing drug use among youth. Researchers conclude in a U.S. Department of Justice report that the DARE core curriculum will not reduce substance use among students. The report recommends that any further reliance on DARE as a drug prevention strategy should be viewed as a part of a more comprehensive program using social learning and life learning skills.

Street Surveillance Cameras
Another crime prevention strategy used in Toledo, Ohio are surveillance cameras which are posted throughout various neighborhoods and main streets. These surveillance cameras has been an amazing addition to our city towards reducing crime, There cameras reduce the likelihood a a crime being committed in the vicinity being that they would be recorded and caught by the authorities as that area is under 24 hour watch. The downfall `is that because the cameras are noticeable with bright blinking lights, criminals are sure to not commit crime the facing of the camera but will on the opposite end or side of the facing camera. All in all, cameras are placed in highly crime committed areas and where traffic accidents and violations have been committed as well. I believe that this strategy has been the most beneficial strategy as of yet in our city towards reducing crime.

Crime happens in every neighborhood, whether it is an upscale community or a rundown slum. It is a beautiful idea to think that if a community comes together and neighbors watch each other’s back, then we can eliminate crime completely. However, we all know that as wonderful as that would be, it is simply unrealistic. On the other hand, it is possible to reduce the number of crimes to the minimum if the community come together and work with each other. Therefore, it is important to have a research on how effective a neighborhood watch program really is after its implementation.…

This allows for the victim to be heard and valued and the offender to not be labeled in the future as an offender. This is all done within Sonoma County California. The pros of the program are the goals that it plans to achieve to reduce recidivism, allow offenders to learn to become better members of the community, and for the victims to be included and understood. This community also benefits from this because of the community service work it gets from the offenders. This allows for tax paying incarceration and court fees to not be necessary for first time offenders. This does not work all the time especially when the offender will not take…

Each of them has kind of the same purposes of concluding the trends in different crimes and suggesting the attention of issues. Even though, those types of crime measurement all have the similar focus, the result varies a great bit between them. While reading this, keep in mind each type of measurements are ran by different groups that hold their own ways of gathering information. It is often known that in the United States, the Uniform Crime Report (UCR) is the most relied upon. Many believe the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) gathers all their information from local law enforcement agencies around the world. Results come from recorded police reports which collect data on about 95% of the population (appendix table 2 in Criminal Victimization, 2012, NCJ 243389, October 2013). The UCR breaks down crimes into Part One and Part Two offenses. Part One offenses include eight crimes being either violent or property offenses (which are the more serious crimes). Meanwhile, Part Two offenses include all other minor crimes except for traffic…

A resident may have been in trouble before or a family member may have had issues with a policeman and or with the criminal justice system. They may feel like they were not treated properly perhaps treated unfairly for their home, the way they dress, their surroundings and maybe just being in the wrong place at the wrong time. They may feel as though they are characterized and judged on who they could be rather than who they really are. The citizens lose sight of the protection that officers provide for them and their families. They put up this wall and lose insight on the purpose of the officers and focus more on the threat of the officers. Community Policing starts with children and thus gaining respect from adults. Many times an offender…

Community policing differs from traditional policing in how the community is perceived and in its expanded policing goals. While crime control and prevention remain central priorities, community policing strategies use a wide variety of methods to address these goals. The police and the community become partners in addressing problems of disorder and neglect (e.g., gang activity, abandoned cars, and broken windows) that, although perhaps not criminal, can eventually lead to serious crime. As links between the police and the community are strengthened over time, the ensuing partnership will be better able to pinpoint and mitigate the underlying causes of crime.…

The importance with this type of policing is on preventing crime before it occurs, not reacting to concerns when the offense happens. Community policing offers a type of control over how their neighborhood is ran. Community policing recommends that police become a bigger part of the areas they patrol. This aids police to gain a stronger sense of resident 's wants and helps residents to improve bigger trust within the police. Together, the community and local department work along to attain a standard goal of a safer, higher place to measure. When both sides come together then the crime rate will in fact drop considerably. There are always ways that this program will not succeed but if the foundation remains strong then there is no way that this will fail. With all programs there is a process and with this one there are two in…

My understanding of this program is that it puts the prevention of crime in the community’s hands. The way it does this is with the community have having programs such as neighborhood watch home security survey. Of course the community still has to work with the police for these programs to work. Especially the security survey because this one requires for an officer to be sent out to your home and go over with you ways you can prevent your home to be less of a target to criminals. The third program is the communication program.…

Some would argue that this method does not really stop crime; it just stops it in that area. This method may stop crime in cities and stores that are well off and equipped with these kinds of security measures. This method however only brings more crime to poorer neighborhoods that cannot afford these security measures. If the store in the Chapel Hills mall owns cameras and security devices than that will cut down on the theft at that particular store. It just brings the crime to a smaller store that is only MORE affected by this crime than its larger counterpart. Ultimately a criminal will weigh out the risk and costs of the crime, and when the costs and risk of the crime are too high a crime is less likely to…

Neighbors helping neighbors, applying extra sets of eyes to the neighborhood helping law enforcement prevent crime and reduce fear amongst the community is the most cost effective way to improve relationships between police and the community (Los Angeles Police Foundation, 2017.) In this situation, the LAPD works in conjunction with the community organizations, businesses, residents of the neighborhood using a “basic car” permanent car assigned to a specific…
