Primary Care Experience Paper
I spent my morning with Kathy Sullivan in the Primary Care Mental Health department at the VA hospital. Kathy’s job is to screen Veterans who are referred for a mental health assessment by their primary care providers. A Veteran’s physician will meet with them for annual visits and/or any other medical care that the Veteran requires. During their visit, if the physician at any time feels the Veteran is in need of a mental health assessment, they will send the patient over to Kathy’s office or have Kathy come over and meet with the patient to ensure that a visit is scheduled before the Veteran leaves the building. This ensures that Veterans are receiving help physically and mentally as well.

Not only were the sessions therapeutic for the patients but I also felt as though they were therapeutic for me as well. Sitting and listening to these Veterans talk about their experiences and venting their frustrations was enlightening for me, but the best part was when it was time for them to leave. The walked into the office with very serious expressions on their faces but when it was time to leave they were smiling and almost seemed as if a weight had been lifted from their shoulders. If the Veteran’s primary care physician had not referred them directly to Kathy for screening after their visit, these people might not get help they clearly needed. Getting someone connected to help immediately prevents him or her from going home and second-guessing the idea of reaching out for help. This greatly increases the chances that someone will get the help that they need and deserve. I left Kathy’s office that day feeling a sense of accomplishment and reward for being able to help someone just by sitting there and listening to them. It is amazing how much we can help someone without even laying a hand on

When I was pregnant with Aaron I gained 40 lbs. (I am 5'0" and normally hover around 100lbs.) As a result of my rapidly expanding belly, I pulled some muscle on my left hip, which remained very painful for quite some time after he was born. I returned to dance class when Aaron was about four months old and noticed how painful my hip felt whenever I stood in 5th position. I finally saw a physical therapist about it and she thought the pain was probably due to scar tissue, which had formed in that spot. After several weeks of exercises that did not appear to be making much difference, she decided to try electromagnetic stimulation on the area. It worked like a charm and completely eliminated the pain. It never returned.…

By being in the elementary school in the Hill District I have gained so many valuable experiences. I have been able to learn so much from these kids and my hope is that they too have learned something from Duquesne students. One thing that I have been able to observe at Weil Elementary school is health behaviors. This is a broad category, but there is one health behavior that I have seen numerous times in the first grade classroom I am in. I have seen numerous kids falling asleep during class time. This has occurred while they are sitting at their desk, sitting on the reading carpet, etcetera. What the teacher will wake them up and tell them to go to the bathroom and wet their face. Sometimes this works and the child will stay awake, but other times the child will doze off again. This is alarming because it shows the lack of sleep some of these children get, and this lack of sleep is leading to a poor performance in their education.…

My overall practicum experience was fun and helpful. I really enjoyed having the opportunity to be inside an actual classroom. I go to see and be a part of a week in the life of a teacher and student. I observed meetings, lessons, and student interactions along with teachers. Three days out of the week I got the chance to sit in a team meeting. I thought it was a productive to see how the teachers interacted with one another. They worked together to come up with different ideas on how to teach their lessons. I could tell they all had a good relationship because they joked and freely gave their opinions. I also thought it was a good learning experience to see how my teacher presented her lesson plan with technology. In Today society technology,…
