Child abuse disregards the most basic rights of children and teens; it has very clearly emerged across the United States with different kinds of abuse. Who are at risk of abuse and unfair treatment? Child abuse is a very dangerous problem that manifests all forms of physical and emotional affliction, sexual abuse, neglect or negligent treatment resulting in harm to the child’s health, survival or development. The question is how many children are neglected and abused each year in the United States. How is the community supposed to prevent and stop child abuse?

There are signs, though may be hard to tell, of the abuse. The child may be fearful and shy away from touch. They may be afraid to go home, they wear clothes that are not appropriate for the weather, such as long sleeves and pants when it’s hot outside. Child abuse is a problem that needs to be dealt with and stopped.
Child abuse is more common then you may realize. Boys and girls are both likely to suffer from abuse. “In 2005, 47.3% of male children were abused while a 50.7% were female.” (Starr, Brandi. Statistics of Child Abuse. Personal interview. 26 Feb. 2016.) It seems to be more common in children ages form birth to 3 years. Experienced educators likely have seen all forms of child abuse at one time or another. They are alert to signs like these that may signal the presence of child abuse. As specified by the NCANDS, 79.4% of parents were the ones who were abusing the child while the other 6.8% were other relatives. The remaining 13.8% were unknown.” (11 Facts about Child Abuse.) Many victims go unknown to CPS agencies. Thousands of children and young adult suffer all types of abuse each day.

How do you prevent and/or stop child abuse? Pay attention to the signs. See if the child has bruises or cuts. Are they afraid of their parents? Do they shy away from touch? Do they act inappropriately? Do the parents seem supportive of the child? If any of these things are present or not, there might be something else going on.
