ABSTRACT
The purpose of this experiment is to prepare cyclohexene form cyclohexanol, and know the properties of alkene. The first part of this experiment is preparation of cyclohexene. Simple distillation set-up is assembled. (See Figure 1). Exactly 6.0mL of cyclohexanol is weighed in a quick-fit one-necked pear shaped flask. 1.50mL of 85% H3PO4 is measured using the 2mL pipet and added to the weighed cyclohexanol. Another 0.25mL of concentrated H2SO4 is also added. The reagents are mixed using stirring rod. Glass beads were added after it was shake very well. The heat regulator was switched to 5 or 6 and allowed to distill at 130-140°C until 0.50mL of the mixture was left in the pear-shaped flask. The hydrocarbon layer of the distillate (mixture of cyclohexene and water) was transferred to another test tube using dropper. The hydrocarbon layer was extracted twice with 2.0mL of cold water. Anhydrous calcium chloride powder was added to the hydrocarbon layer (enough to still see the liquid) and stirred occasionally for 6minutes. The solid was allowed to settle down. The liquid part of the mixture was removes using pipet and transferred to the 25mL quick-fit round bottom flask. Simple distillation set-up is again assembled. The hydrocarbon was distilled and the distillate at 82-85°C was collected. The receiver was weighed in order to get the weigh of the distillate to be used for computing the percentage recovery. The second part of this experiment is properties of alkene. The prepared cyclohexene was used as test compound. For flammability, 2 drops of the compound was placed in an n evaporating dish and lit with match. For solubility, 2 drops

4-methylcyclohexanol was synthesized to 4-methylcyclohexene using dehydration. 4-methylcyclohexanol was heated to reflux and the subsequent distillate (4-methylcyclohexe) was collected. It was then purified using sodium chloride to separate products and an anhydrous solid was then added and filtered. The resulting product had a mass of 0.399 g and a percent yield of 41%. The product was positively identified and characterized as 4-methylcyclohexene via IR and Br2 test.…

The goal of this experiment was to separate Toluene and Hexane by distillation and gas chromatography based on their difference in boiling points. The boiling point of hexane is 69 degrees Celsius and the boiling point of toluene is 110 degrees Celsius. Three fractions were collected for both simple and fractional distillation. The first fraction was hexane since it had the lower boiling point. The second fraction was a mixture of toluene and hexane. The third fraction was toluene since it had the high boiling point of 110 degrees Celsius. Gas chromatography was also preformed on each of the fractions from simple and fractional distillation. In the gas chromatography process, the compounds are carried through a stationary phase, and pushed…

The volume of 20 mmol of 2-methylcyclohexanol was calculated and transferred into a round-bottom flask. Then 0.7 mL of 85 % phosphoric acid was mixed in. The reaction vessel was clamped to a ring stand over a suitable heat source and an apparatus was assembled for simple distillation using a Hickman still, water cooled condenser, and thermometer. Then a conical vial was weighted and recorded. After turning on the heat source in slow power, it was waited until it started to distillate. The temperature when it began was 58°C. Using a Pasteur pipet, the distillate was regularly transferred into the conical vial until only a yellow solution remained. It wasn’t left to dry completely. The temperature was 75°C when the vessel was taken from the heat source. The distillate was then washed with 1.5 mL of 5 % aqueous sodium bicarbonate. Then the aqueous lower layer was carefully removed. The upper layer was cloudy at first until it started to become clear after a few minutes. The solution was dried through anhydrous calcium chloride. Then it was weighted.…

Since simple distillation is a physical process, it separated the two chemicals from the mixture based on how easily they vaporize. As the mixture was heated, the temperature rose until it reached the temperature of the lowest boiling substance in the mixture which was cyclohexane. The temperature at which the first drop was collected was 79.5oC and the distillation of cyclohexane was stopped when the still-head temperature was 94.5oC . Therefore, the boiling range of cyclohexane in this experiment was 79.5oC- 94.5oC.The resultant hot vapor passed through into the condenser and was converted into liquid, which was then collected into a graduated cylinder. During this time, the ethyl benzene remained in its original phase. Since cyclohexane had a lower boiling point, it is considered to be more volatile in comparison to ethyl benzene. After a plateau in temperature was observed, the temperature was increased in order for ethyl benzene to reach its boiling point. The temperature at which ethyl benzene was collected was 127oC and the distillation of ethyl benzene was stopped when the still-head temperature was 138.5oC. The boiling range for ethyl benzene was observed to be in between 127oC-138.5oC. The liquids were collected in increments of 4mL. The first 28mL collected were of cyclohexane and the last 16 mL collected were of ethyl benzene,…

40ml of an equimolar mixture of cyclohexane and toluene was obtained and transferred into a 100ml round bottomed boiling flask which contained boiling chips. The distilling column was packed with metal sponge and the height was measured in centimeters and recorded. The distillation apparatus was assembled and a heat mantle was set. Several vials were used as fraction receivers. The vials were labeled, 1-4, and weighed prior to adding the liquid mixture and after the liquid was added. The temperature was recorded before adding heat in order to begin distillation (20º C). The temperature was recorded prior to each distillation fraction and after each 2ml of distillate which was recorded in table 1. The system was turned off and cooled down letting the remaining condensed vapor drain into the round bottomed flask. This sample was transferred by pipette into a vial…

The acid used in this experiment was 85% phosphoric acid and the alcohol was cyclohexanol. The phosphoric acid is a catalyst and as such increased the rate of reaction but did not affect the overall stoichiometry. In this reaction, as the alcohol and acid were heated, alkene and water were produced and co-distilled into a collection vial. As in any distillation, unless precautions are taken, some of the product would have been lost as hold-up in the apparatus. Hold-up would result in a reduced yield of product. To overcome this problem and to ensure that a maximum amount of product is distilled, a higher boiling "chaser" solvent was added to the distillation flask and the distillation is continued until the temperature rose well over the BP of cyclohexene. At this point it was assumed that all product has distilled into the collection…

In this experiment, in both distillation techniques it was observed the separation of the cyclohexene-toluene as the mixture was heated. The vaporization of the mixture was visible when the temperature was increasing. Another observation shows that the vapor was condensed and the it was turned back into liquid form and collected at the Hickman still head. Others qualitative observations demonstrate that the bottom round flask was extremely hot as it became in contact with the hot bath sand. For the simple distillation however, quantitative observations demonstrate that the temperature was increasing from 80C° to 103C ° but decreased to 102C ° as the amount of the cyclohexene-toluene was relatively low at the bottom flask. For the fractional…

In the first step, the mixture of water, concentrated sulphuric acid, and cyclohexene was shaken vigorously until it became a homogenous solution. Followed by, the addition of water, and the distillation process lead to the hydrolysis of the alkene. Finally, addition of diethyl ether to the mixture then distillation took place to be purified and to obtain the final product, cyclohexanol (McFadden, 2012). Diethyl ether was used to extract alcohol from salt-water mixture because diethyl ethers solubility in water is lower than cyclohexanol which helps remove alcohol from the salt-water mixture (Merzougui, A, et al., 2011).…

The first three labs of this organic chemistry experiment involved carrying out the first three parts of the Cyclohexanol Cycle. The cyclohexanol was first converted to cyclohexene and water by simple distillation (product: 6.5395g, 79.75% recovery). The cyclohexene then underwent a bromination reaction by addition of concentrated HBr and a 30% H2O2 solution, followed by an extraction of the aqueous phase. This produced trans-1,2-dibromocyclohexane (product: 12.8886g, 67.34% recovery). The trans-1,2-dibromocyclohexane was reduced by zinc metal to cyclohexene. The reaction was conducted in water, first allowing the reaction to reflux and then isolating the cyclohexene by distillation (product: 4.2144g, 95.89%).…
