SUMMARY
Precious is a bemused plump teenage black American girl who lives and study in Harlem, New York. The kind of girl who has all the characteristics that a man would detest. Her name “Precious” was derived from her mother’s affection for her when she was young. However, in the movie, she grew up verbally abused by her mother and sexually abused by her father. Her mother’s verbal abuse centered on encrypting into her mind that she is incapable of learning and she is an outright stupid. The abuses that she suffered resulted in her being a reserved and a quiet kind of person. Nonetheless in spite of being reserved and quiet her daydreams of a fabulous and a center of attraction life remain. Included in those dream a picture of an ideal mother that she wanted her mother to be.
Precious’ mom is an embodiment of everything that you don’t want your mother to be. A foul mouthed self-centered nymphomaniac whose laziness is more than a sloth. Precious’ mom doesn’t have a job although she pretends to be looking for one. Their living depends on the welfare money that their government is giving them. And it seems like that the welfare money is all that binds her to Precious. She is a consistent liar, a great actress. She capitalizes on her daughter’s worthless feeling. She always commands what her daughter would do and assures herself the command on Precious life. Amidst all this “evil” characteristics, what differentiates her from a normal mom is that she allows her daughter to be raped and be sexually abused by her husband. By her inactions implied her consent to the evil immoral and incestuous act.
When her father repeatedly rapes her, Precious escapes to a rich fantasy life where she's literally a star, flashbulbs popping, adoring crowds cheering, and everyone loves her.
