Power And Corruption In Macbeth
Power does not have the ability to corrupt someone and change their original belief system into a fraudulent one. Being predisposed to power and having any amount of it cannot turn a relatively nice person with strong values into an unprincipled leader or authority figure. Despite the power someone can get from many positions it is due to their own characteristics, and power itself shouldn’t be at fault for corruption that relinquishes from their actions. Each person has the choice to use their power to benefit themselves or help the people underneath their position. Power comes with certain symptoms such as “increasing alertness, confidence, energy, and feelings of well-being and euphoria”, negative symptoms also come with power including “anxiety, paranoia and restlessness.” (Source 3, Page 1). Corruption cannot be blamed from these symptoms because ultimately the final decision is decided by the individual. Despite these effects, Power helps a person make more decisive and erratic decisions. A personality switch is unlikely to occur but under the influence of someone corruption can happen. Revealed by Macbeth, Macbeth had a drastic change as he sullied his character with each murder he concocted to take the position as king. The semblance to his old personality was gone by the end of the novel because of his greed for power. Giving someone power can simply be used to achieve their own objectives from a previous position. Power may seem tempting to people in a high position so using it for ill-will would reveal truly how they function with newly given privilege. Overall, A person’s personal ethics and beliefs is what determines if power will corrupt a person. Corruption is more likely in a person with full control but it is not guaranteed and will not occur in every leadership position.
