The challenge began when it was time to decide what field of study to target, what type of school to attend, and where I envisioned myself in the future.…

Athletes should use their influence for a political agenda that aims for positivity and change for the better. In the article “The Athlete as Agent of Change” it shows how a scholar-athlete expressed her dislike of the Iraq war in 2003. “ Toni Smith, the then- 21-year-old senior guard on the Manhattanville College women's basketball team, who expressed her opposition to the Iraq War in 2003 by turning her back on the flag.” This shows that protests during the National Anthem can occur at any level of sport not just the professional level. This is a brave action by Ms. Smith because she more than likely knew that she would receive harsh criticism and mostly hate at such a young age. Mrs. Smith isn’t the first person to protest during the national…

Bravery in heroes can also be shown through defeating the odds by going against the norms and changing the course of history. In an article by Greenhaven Press many athletes prove that anything is possible, even if it is not the norm, “Courageous athletes are challenging social boundaries and giving hope: female auto racer Danica Patrick has risen to prominence in a traditionally male-dominated sport, and NBA player Jason Collins became the first male athlete gay.” These athletes did not care what other people thought of themselves, they did the things they loved. Obviously, people scorned them because they should not belong, but they did not care. They broke the norm, which is a brave action because not everyone is able to do that. These athletes…

Most kids of today pick their role models from who they see on TV. Do Celebrities make good role models? These celebrities that kids are looking up to are adults and partake in adult behavior. Not only do they partake in adult behavior but also, on many occasions, illegal behavior. In addition to that, these celebrities may have a profession that includes adult themes. Impressionable kids should not be learning from them. Celebrities should not be viewed as role models what so ever.…

Athletes are bad role models. The other hand, “Athletes take drugs to enhance their performance”(nelsonprice.com NA).Athletes mostly do drugs to enhance their performance for most sports. Also, many have gotten caught publicly and since these kids have their absolute favorite player they want t o be just like them. Once the media gets out the kids starts to do drugs just like his favorite athlete. Furthermore, these drugs are very harmful especially to kids. My argument is that over time that rate has gone extremely low because of how much is at stake. Especially for their personal lives including providing for their families and jobs. If they lose their job they would be letting down millions of fans.…

On April 12, 2011, the San Antonio Spurs went head to head with the Las Angeles Lakers. To give you an overview of the game, the San Antonio Spurs went home with a lost for the game, but in my book I believe that the Lakers lost that night. Now, why I say that is because Kobe Bryant played with a very short fuse on this night, which is a common thing to see. He earned his fifteenth technical foul of the season and coming close to the NBA’s one game suspension. Bryant’s tantrum was really elevated by punching a chair on the bench. Now, I am personally not surprised, since all season long he has thrown these tantrums. I say tantrums because Kobe is the type of guy that feels everything should go his way. Kobe Bryant was born August 23, 1978 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, raised Roman Catholic by Joe “jellybean” Bryant and Pamela Cox Bryant. Being from a Christian religion you would expect more of a respectful attitude, especially in a role model to our children. In my opinion, Kobe Bryant puts out a persona of a new ager in that he is very ego-centrically. He believes that he should be able to get away with anything he wants, even if that is hurting someone else.…

Everyday today's youth are asked what they want to be when they grow up. Some say teachers, firemen, police officers and a large response to that question is a professional athlete. Something that all these professions have in common is that they are all role models to children. Firemen, teachers, police officers have an easy job at doing this; they are after all the people that save children, teach children and protect children. But professional athletes on the other hand have a difficult task assigned to them when it comes to being role models. Professional athletes are not given an option as to be a role model or not. Just because they have a special gift does not make them have to be looked up to. Professional athletes are not good role models because of the things they do off the court, the false identity they put on, and because of the fact that in a lot of instances they are just an image on TV.…

So, what really is considered a role model? According to the Webster dictionary, a role model is a person whose behavior, example, or success is or can be emulated by others, especially by younger people (Collins). Growing up one of my main role models was my mother. She was, as still is someone who is a hard worker, raised four kids while in school and working two jobs. She is someone who sacrificed so much just to give her kids everything and that is what I consider a role model in my eyes.…
