Position Statement - Titus Andronicus Versus Othello

Race and Barbarianism in Titus Andronicus
Our team’s argument revolves around the character’s sense of revenge, retribution, and cruelty in Titus Andronicus. All the characters are aware of the cruelty that goes on around them, including the women, who are agents in their own fate. Titus uses violence and spectacle to work in its favor, as well as the character of Aaron to orchestrate the revenge. In my arguments, I posit that cruelty is an equalizer, and that instead of one group coming out as “the winner”, it destroys everyone. Everyone who commits a crime against another person is punished. Titus Andronicus is a play about superiority and race; it challenges the preconceived notions of “the barbarian”, “cruelty”, and the notion of the foreign “other”. There is an underlying irony that despite everyone seeing themselves as the most “civil” race or class, they are all capable of the same cruel acts in order to satisfy their desire for revenge. Race does not determine a character’s capability for cruelty; they are all equal, even though their societies have made them out to be “the better”. Despite each character’s recognition of their desire for revenge, they still proceed.
The Roman characters, such as Titus and Marcus, who see themselves as superior is class and race to both Tamora and Aaron, hide behind their status as government officials to make cruel, very personal decisions. Titus, a decorated war hero, is capable of the same cruel actions as Tamora. His personal choice to have her son stabbed and burned proves that he no more capable of being "better" than they are. He is a Roman who is accepted and loved by the people, and is the character that sends the world of the play spiralling down. Titus, who kills his own son in 1.2, proves his capability in “that someone 's basic, human interests are undermined by a higher or more powerful authority” (Koumakpai 75). He puts the city of Rome before his family, and kills his own son as

Without any power, a society tends to become irrational, indecisive and flavorless. This ideal is portrayed in all scenes including plebeians, whether through direct or indirect characterization. The premiering scene portrayed Marullus and Flavius along the streets, scolding commoners for being hypocrites. “You blocks, you stones, you worse than senseless things!/O you hard hearts, you cruel men of Rome,/Knew you not Pompey?” (1.1.27-29) was proclaimed by Marullus, in protest of Caesars’ celebrations. This reveals that the common people of Rome are easily swayed, as they cheered for Caesar defeating his predecessor, after recently cheering for Pompey himself. An exquisite example of the citizens’ complacency comes from the Third Plebeian. He states,“The noble Brutus is ascended: silence” (3.2.14) but yet, after a short speech from Antony regarding the conspirators, he claims, “There’s not a nobler man in Rome than Antony”( 3.2.96). Furthermore, when attending to Caesar,“We are bless’d that Rome is rid of him”(3.2.48) stated the citizens, only to later say, “They were villains, murderers” (3.2.135) merely for doing the very “ridding” they praised! Complicity and irrationality are portrayed by the violent outburst, “Revenge!—About!—Seek!—Burn!/Fire!—Kill!—Slay! Let not a traitor live” (3.2.183-184) from the citizens, once Antony’s speech is…

The exposition of Julius Caesar, Shakespeare immediately presents the ideals that underpin the differing views of Caesar’s rising power through his two protagonists, Brutus and Cassius. Both characters posses different interpretations on Caesar’s reign on Rome, one being loyal to Rome and a love and respect for Caesar “I love him well” but the other being a spiteful and vitriolic towards a “feeble old tyrant.” This highlights the notion of Cassius’s selfish prejudice towards his own contentment, which is only shown behind closed doors. Brutus on the other hand is victim to Cassius’ vitriol and becomes the pawn as he is manipulated “poor Brutus, with himself at war,” Brutus is troubled emotionally, torn by his patriotism and his respect for Caesar, above all he has an undying love for Rome, “Brutus had rather be a villager than to repute himself a son of Rome.” It is this love for Rome that causes such internal turmoil for Brutus, through Shakespeare’s use of juxtaposition of characters, he is able to highlight to the audience, the lengths that man will go to in order to…

The two villains in "Much Ado About Nothing" and "Othello" share much in common, despite their numerous differences. It is evident that Shakespeare framed the second piece of literature to be similar to the first. Although shorter, the plot of "Othello" is definitely more complex. The villains play a major part in the novels, and are very much alike in their line of thinking.…

The attitudes and values portrayed in Shakespeare’s Othello exemplify a great value of understanding and familiarity in today’s society where patriarchy and prejudice is still seen. Humans still create and conform to racist stereotypes; furthermore the greed for power and control has destructive impacts. These same concepts are depicted throughout Othello; Iago’s greed and desire for power and control, and the driving theme of jealousy, promoted across various characters including Othello, Iago and Roderigo.…

The whole Iago verses Othello on who’s the main character of this tragedy has been going on for decades. Iago is a manipulative, revenge seeking, nefarious villain; although he seeks all this attention he is not of great importance in my opinion. Othello is the main character in Shakespeare’s play The Tragedy of Othello for a number of reasons some of them being; without him there would be no play everything revolves around him, the title of this play is his name, and the major role he plays in Venetian government as a trusted soldier and leader.…

In Arthur Miller’s “The Crucible”, we are faced with an interesting psychological question: What would happen if the lowest social rank attained power? After all, in the time of the Salem witch trials, women suffered because of their low rank and were expected to submit themselves to men. However, instead of portraying strong female figures, which combat outdated beliefs of a woman’s duty, this play casts women as weak creatures whose only access to power is through dishonesty and manipulation.…

William Shakespeare is the most famous writer of plays in the English language. He was born in 1564, in Stratford upon-Avon and died on the 23rd of April, 1616. He wrote thirty-nine plays and hundreds of poems. His father William was a successful local businessman and his mother Mary was the daughter of a landowner. Relatively prosperous, it is likely the family paid for William’s education, although there is no evidence he attended university. He attended the local Stratford grammar school. The Stratford school was a good one, run by a well-respected Oxford grad teacher. The amount of the Latin great author Shakespeare would have learned and which shows up in his plays.…
