Critical Analysis
After reading Mark Edmundson’s article, “Who are you and what you are doing here?” in Oxford America magazine published on 22 August 2011, I chose to create my Public Service Announcement (PSA) as a poster. In the article, by telling his own story and discussing some false perception of the purpose of higher education which is “a mean to an end”, Edmundson has sent a message: education helps you to become the one you yourself want to. The article has inspired me to come up with the idea about my poster and I believe that with my PSA, you will deeply get into the author’s point as I did. In my PSA, I will use words and symbolic images to express my perspective on this issue. In this critical analysis, I will explain the rhetorical choices I made including the audience, purpose, genre and the organization.
First of all, my PSA focus on how and why education helps us to become the one we want to, not anyone else. This is the most outstanding thought came up to my mind after reading the article. As you may ask me why, this issue is growing and growing bigger everywhere in this world, and to be more specific, in Vietnam, my country. I can see my friends, my peers getting bored of this life as they cannot be truly themselves. They want or have to pleased their parents hope, and even just follow what they were told to do without thinking about what their passion, their dream is. And I would like to make it clear here that “for you risk trying to be someone else than who you are, which, in the long run, is killing”- as Mark Edmundson said in “Who are you and what you are doing here?” . And for anyone who is still confused about the future, I hope my PSA is useful. My intended audience is high school and university students, whose age ranges from 16 to 22.     He states that to find “who you are” is the only question and the only lesson in life (Jensen 41). Every person is unique, and we play our role in this society. So, discovering yourself is more important than any academic lesson. It seems that most of the schools are trying to shape students’ thoughts. They think students should learn how to gain benefits from the society. To be more specific, Derrick Jensen thinks that our current education system has destroyed our own habits and students can’t feel happy in school.
