Petruchio In The Taming Of The Shrew
The play The Taming of the Shrew by William Shakespeare is about a guy name Lucentio who is wooed by Bianca at first sight. Hortensio is also wooed by Bianca, but they both soon realize that Bianca’s father Baptista has a rule that is that Bianca can not get married until Katherine does. Katherine is Bianca’s sister who is a shrew, Hortensio finds Petruchio who is willing to marry Katherine because of her money. Hortensio soon realizes that Bianca does not like him, so he moves on. Petruchio and Katherine end up getting married and Petruchio ends up taming Katherine. Bianca and Lucentio end up eloping and go back to Padua where Baptista is. Petruchio only goes to Padua to marry a rich woman. While Hortensio and Gremio are out looking for Katherine a wife they find Petruchio. Hortensio and Gremio are both afraid of Katherine so Petruchio says “Tush, tush! fear boys with bugs.” (Shakespeare 59) Petruchio says this because they’re afraid of Katherine and he is not. Baptista’s dowry with Petruchio is one half of his lands and 20 thousand crowns. Which is exactly what Petruchio wanted Katherine for. This shows that Petruchio only went to Padua to find a rich wife and only wanted Katherine at his convenience. Higgins meets Liza and realizes she wants to learn how to be a proper lady. “She’s no use: I’ve got all the records I want of the Lisson Grove lingo; and i’m not going to waste another cylinder on it. Be off with you: I don’t want you.” (Shaw 26) Higgins does not want anything to with Liza because he thinks she cannot be taught until Pickering makes a bet with him. “I’ll say you’re the greatest teacher alive if you make that good. I’ll bet you all the expenses of the experiment you can’t do it, and i’ll pay for the lessons.” (Shaw 29) Now that Pickering made the bet with Higgins, he is now interested in her. The same thing goes for Higgins, he did not want Eliza until money was brought up. So we can conclude that these characters are the same based on how they only wanted Katherine and Eliza solely for
