The Taming of the Shrew is a dramatic comedy written by Shakespeare that was written in 1593 that takes place near Verona, Italy. The play has multiple elements of dramatic irony and comedic language. The play shows the process of marriage back then and the problems that most brides, and grooms faced. Often in those days, the father of the bride would arrange the marriage of their daughter, these arrangements were virtually final regardless of the daughter’s opinion. In the play; Kate, a quick-tempered and hostile girl who goes against all chances to get married, is one of the main characters in the play. Her personality at the beginning of the play was mean, snobby, rebellious and rude. These descriptions are seen in Act 2 Scene 1; Kate has multiple snaps back at Petruchio in a flirtatious conversation. Petruchio playfully says “Thou hast hit it. Come sit on me”(pg 89), and Kate answers back “ Asses are made to bear, and so are you”(pg 89). This shows Kate at the beginning of the play and shows her as a very rude, snobby girl. Her personality is quite distinct, and Petruchio picks up on that and he sees an opportunity for change. Prithee, be not angry”(pg 131), Kate responds with, “I will be angry, What hast thou to do- Father be quiet. He shall stay at my leisure”(pg 131). This scene shows Petruchio wanting to leave and Kate telling him to stay against Petruchio and her father’s will. This scene starts the stages of change for Kate and her evolving personality.
Kate’s outlook on marriage at the beginning of the play was based around the thoughts of bitter resentment and anger. She thought that she shouldn’t have to marry the man that her father lines up for her, and she had every right to think that. These feelings against marriage can be seen in Act 2 Scene 1; Kate is told by her father that she will marry Petruchio, and Kate responds “I will go sit and weep.
