Persuasive Techniques in Twelve Angry Men
Persuasive techniques are commonly used when speaking in the hopes of bringing another to their side in a conversation. Reginald Rose creates a list of goals that he hopes to achieve in the writing of Twelve Angry Men, and uses these to incorporate certain persuasive techniques in the speaking of others in the story. By observing the most essential goals of evidence remembered and juror to juror relationships, Juror Eight most successfully uses ethos as a persuasive technique. While using this technique, he is able to persuade other characters profitably to his side of the argument, thus allowing for the verdict called upon at the end of the story. Therefore, Twelve Angry Men proves that ethos is the most successful persuative technique out of the rest of them. In many occasions, Juror Eight is forced to explain his reasoning behind his decisions chosen, many of which contradict the rest of the jurors. In one situation, the jurors discuss a piece of evidence where a women claims to have seen the murder occur through the window of the el train. Although most of the jurors find this story told to be true, Juror Eight sees another side. He says, “How can the woman be sure it was the kid when she saw it through the windows of a passing elevated train?”(Act 1, Page 19) Opposing the others, he uses his knowledge of the evidence in order to questions the other jurors’ thoughts. He also says, “How come you believed her? She’s one of them, too, isn’t she?” (Act 1, Page 19) In this quote, Juror Eight shows credibility and consideration to the fact that it may be possible that this woman was stretching the truth. At that point, his appeal to ethos causes some of the jurors to question the relevance in that piece of evidence. Not only is the goal of evidence remembered brought up, but so is the juror to juror relationship between Juror Eight and Juror Ten.     In the play Twelve Angry Men, Reginald Rose shows that prejudices can prevent jurors from seeing the truth. This is evident throughout the play as juror 10 blinded to the facts because prejudice clouds his judgement. However, besides prejudice, Rose also show personal bias, ignorance and a weak characteristic can take away jurors’ abilities to see the truth. For instance, juror 3’s bad relationship with his son in the past and juror7’s ignorant attitude towards the case ultimately affect their perspective about the facts and evidence presented in the case. As a result, these factors not only obscure the truth but also make it hard for the jury to reach a just verdict and threaten the credibility of the jury system.…

    Reginald Rose’s play Twelve Angry Men emphasises the importance of seeing things from more than one perspective. Set in a New York jury room in 1957, Rose highlights how important it is that the jury discuss all of the evidence from the case in detail and from multiple angles. Representative of this notion is the 8th Juror who is willing to acknowledge alternative views or interpretations. From the outset of the play he goes against the crowd voting “not guilty”. He then considers all of the details of the evidence including the old man’s testimony and the boy’s inability to remember the movie he saw. In contrast to this character, are Jurors 3 and 10 who are portrayed as the antagonists because of their narrow mindedness and arrogance. They are very rigid in the way they apply their single minded world view and they have a reluctance to recognise the existence of another truth. Rose endorses the 8th Juror’s ability to see things from many perspectives and condemns the 3rd and 10th Juror’s inability to do so. This reveals the significance of looking at the evidence from a variety of perspectives in order to create a just verdict.…

    This chapter is the most important because the introduction of Aristotle’s top three tools in an argument, logos, ethos and pathos is introduced. He calls them “ The most powerful tools of persuasion: Argument by character, argument by logic, and argument by emotion” (38) also known as logos, ethos and pathos for short. By using emotion, logic and character it makes it easier to manipulate someone in an argument.     At the conception of Twelve Angry Men, Rose exposes the audience to the devastating heat in the jury room which over looks the "New York sky line" on what is described as "the hottest day of the the year". At this stage it is revealed to the audience the apathetic nature of jury members, uninterested in the "grave responsibility" they have in deciding the fate of the "16 year old boys life" and more interested with the goal of escaping the plain, oven like jury room.
