An estimated 26 million animals are used every year in the United States fir various types of testing. These animals are used for scientific and commercial testing to develop medical treatments, determine toxicity of medications and chemicals, check the safety of products destined for human use and other biomedical or healthcare purposes. This testing on animals is cruel, inhumane and should be banned. Many animals are subject to inhumane conditions and procedures in the “name of science”. Animals are used for testing in everything from that trendy matte red lipstick from Covergirl Cosmetics to medical lab testing used to correctly identify the antibody signaling an immune response in lab rats. Animal testing has a vast range of uses with little to no rules identifying the treatment the animal subject to testing is subjected to. Many different brands, especially cosmetic brands, have cruelty-free stickers on their products to let the customer know the product was produced without harm to animals. The United States of America has not limited the use of animal testing yet, however, the European Union has limited animal testing and banned the use of testing on animals on cosmetics and cosmetic ingredients (European…

I have done a lot of research on animal testing and methods we can use that are more effective and don’t use animals through high school in my free time because of curiosity, so I know a lot of random facts about the harmful nature of this and alternative methods. Animals are being tortured to “help” make better medicine and, the majority of the time does not affect people the same way as animals. Animal testing is inhumane and ineffective the majority of the time, it should be banned.…

Not only humans, but animals also benefit from the use of animal testing. In fact, if animals aren’t used for medical research certain vaccines for rabies, hepatitis and other diseases wouldn’t be curable (Trull). However, many people argue that the human anatomy differs from that of animals. Nonetheless, animals and humans still share common features. Right now, millions of mice, rabbits, primates, cats, dogs, and other animals are locked inside cages across the country waiting for the next painful and terrifying experiment to be performed on them. Before we conduct another experiment, we need to consider our treatment of others, both humans and non-humans. Animal testing is a form of animal cruelty that is no longer necessary or acceptable. There are many alternatives to animal testing that still ensure that the product is safe for humans. In addition to this, different species react differently to the same substances, so the tests aren't always accurate.…

Cosmetic tests performed on animals include dropping chemicals in the animal’s eyes. Animal cruelty is when someone hurts an animal or does not care for an animal responsibly. Many people today can say they love their pet, whether it is a dog, a cat, a rabbit, or fish. Little do we actually think about the animals suffering to the torture of cruel animal testing that goes on behind the scenes of the company’s we love. Maybelline, Head and Shoulders, and Clorox are all companies that test on animals, yet are still supported by the thousands of people that buy and use their products. I believe the main reason people continue to support companies that perform animal testing is because society today is not informed or educated about the severity of animal testing. People do not know or care to research if a company performs animal testing. Besides consumers keeping these companies alive and running, animal testing is not humane or morally right. It has been scientifically proven that animals can to a certain extent feel pain (Tell Me if it Hurts: Investigating Whether Animals Feel Pain by Caroline…

When it relates to cosmetics, the most common procedure is acute toxicity tests. The subject, generally a rabbit, is exposed with substances in deodorants and hairspray by spraying the product directly around the animal while confined in a tight space. This procedure determines the lethal toxicity of the substance. In most cases, the rabbits are placed in full-body restraints. The end result generally ends with the demise of approximately 50% of the subject animals also known as Lethal Dose 50 or LD50. (Monamy, 2009) The substance may also be rubbed onto the subject's skin for hours and later examined to determine degree of irritant. There are alternative testing available that would not include non-human animals. For example, a Skin Square Test that contains human cells was developed to test for toxicity in products. There are also sophisticated computer modellng programs that can predict the toxicity in…
