Personification Of Characters In Life Of Pi

Piscine Molitor Patel or Pi, Pi is named after the French word for pool and is the protagonist of Ang Lee’s Oscar winning movie and Yann Martel’s award winning novel, Life of Pi. Pi and his family departed from their home in India and were moving to Canada to start a new life, but their boat gets caught up in a disastrous storm, sinking the boat and killing everyone aboard except for Pi. Pi then survives 227 agonizing days abandoned in the middle of the Pacific Ocean on an undirected lifeboat with an Orangutan, Zebra, Hyena, and a fearsome Bengal Tiger, named Richard Parker. The way of nature eventually took course and left the boat with only Pi and the strikingly aggressive Bengal Tiger. Pi realizes that living a full life depends on his ability to endure Richard Parker and the treacherous conditions while deserted in the immeasurable blue sea. Piscine Molitor Patel is a sixteen-year-old boy who was hurled on to the spare lifeboat merely seconds before the boat sank into the murky dark sea. Pi believes …show more content…
The hyena is the cook and he personifies selfishness, cruelty, and violence. The zebra is the injured Chinese sailor and he personifies fear and desperation. The Mother is the orangutan and she personifies motherly love and affection and the Tiger, Richard Parker was Pi and he was the personification of the evil that is inherent in the heart of every man. Even after Pi survived those appalling months at sea, he still lived on as an ardent Hindu, Muslim, and Christian throughout his life in Canada. Pi sustained a great deal of pain, and never losing faith in God helped him get through it. His beliefs motivated him to try everything in his power to stay alive. In the novel Pi's actual name is Piscine Molitor Patel. His gets his name from the French word for pool, which specifically is the pool in which his friend Adirubasamy used to swim in. His name itself connects to the concept of water or ocean from the onset. This connection to water is used to exemplify the theme of surviving which could be a reason he is named Pi since he survived in an ocean for 227 days. Moving on Piscline's nickname is Pi which a mathematical expression for an irrational continuous number that starts with 3.14 and then continues with a repetition of words. This repetition basically exemplifies the repetition of Pi's routine to survive on the boat. Every day he woke with one goal which was to survive, and his name adds to the theme of persistence because with the repetition and persistence he might have not survived 227 days. Moreover the mathematical expression pi is used to calculate a circumference of a circle. A circle represents unity and I think the author used to this to add to theme of unity. While he was in the lifeboat, he used praying for a couple of things. He used it to pass the time, but it also was used by him to keep his faith restored, and help him get through this really rough time in his life. He often prayed whenever something would go wrong, but at the same time he would just pray to pass some time, and talk to god. The last thing that occurred on the lifeboat that could have affected his mindset is his realization that his family was really gone. He started to understand this heart-wrenching fact in chapter 49, when he starts to decide to look through the rations of the lifeboat. His realization that they are dead causes him to have a decrease in hope of being found and he kicks into survival mode and doesn’t focus on being found but just staying alive. Because Pi is a Hindu, Christian, and Muslim, he incorporates many of their religious stories into his narrative. When Pi is fourteen, he goes on holiday with his family to a hill station in Munnar. There, he meets a priest named Father Martin. Once Father Martin introduces him to the story of Jesus Christ, it is impossible for Pi to get the Christian Messiah out of his head. Pi says, “I couldn’t get Him [Jesus Christ] out of my head… And the more I learned about Him, the less I wanted to leave Him” (57). For Pi, the ultimate sacrifice of Jesus Christ and the humanity found in the “one Story” (53) of Christianity move him to believe in the Christian view of a Trinitarian God. After one prayer session, Pi is riding back to his house when he “suddenly felt [he] was in heaven” (62). Even though Pi has ridden this route many times before, his “way of seeing it had changed” (62). For once, “the trees, the air, the sun all spoke differently to [him], now they spoke one language of unity” (62). This feeling cannot be explained by science nor caused by anything but the presence of God “coming so close to [Pi]” (62). Because of his connection with God, Pi feels as though he is in a harmonious state of bliss, which is only made possible through his believing in the existence of religions and God.
