Taking an interest in science in my junior class made becoming a clinical physician my one time ambition. This interest evolved over the years mainly due to my mother’s frequent ailments which made us frequent hospitals and clinical laboratories. I was amazed at the proficiency with precision instruments and technologies used in the microbiological laboratories. This amazement and curiosity grew into a burning desire to become a clinical microbiologist, and I know research work in microbiology and immunology will help me get the satisfaction of saving lives by these techniques I can help develop. Realizing the need to further upgrade my professional knowledge and expertise, I file this application for a master’s degree program in microbiology and immunology at
Dalhousie University
Compared with numerous other applicants, I believe that my unique advantage dwells in the strong motivation in life science and microbiology that I have maintained over the years, but more importantly it is embodied by the academic success I have achieved in my undergraduate education in microbiology. My academic performance during my undergraduate program should be described as
“outstanding”, for this I was awarded best academic student in my class.
My undergraduate program in microbiology encompassed forty-five(45)courses, but immunology fascinated me the most, because it is a fascinating subject area that you learn about something that is so pervasive and so intricate and yet extremely difficult to explain and my lecturer was absolutely passionate about the subject, and this passion made me more interested. Apart from class work, I did a six (6) month industrial attachment at the house of assembly complex clinical laboratory Asaba Delta State Nigeria to further develop and gain more insights into microbiological science.
As an interdisciplinary subject that is of cutting edge significance, microbiology and immunology offers many exciting

Biomedical Science is constantly evolving as new advances are made, which will play a vital role in all aspects of healthcare in the future. Studying Biology and Chemistry at AS Level has deepened my insight into these subjects, making me realise that a Biomedical Science degree will allow me to pursue a career that will be both stimulating and rewarding. Discovering how the human body functions at a molecular level and understanding the concepts involved in physiology, neuroscience and biochemistry will enable me to achieve my aspirations. I regularly read ‘Biological Sciences Review’ and ‘The Big Picture’ to keep up to date with advances in Biomedicine and how these can have an impact on our understanding of health and disease. Having read ‘Brain Story’ by Susan Greenfield I have learnt which parts of the brain are involved in memory and emotion, the impact neurodegenerative diseases have on the brain and the research currently being undertaken to create artificial brains, further enhancing my interest in neuroscience.…

As a child, I constantly had my nose in a book. Reading came quite naturally to me, Jane Robinson, and I still carry that passion today. As I grew, I gained another passion; writing. Elementary started my passion through the teachers making the class journal about their lives. These journals helped me to learn to write down my thoughts and keep track of them in chronological order. Writing continues to be a vital part of my education that I enjoy.…

Caring for others has always been a deep passion of mine. As part of my course I have recently attended placement at a local residential home, where I would talk to and assist in caring for the service users. It was at this placement that I discovered the importance at providing support to people who may be feeling confused or distressed, particularly individuals with dementia. As a nurse this is an important skill to have. Initiative is another of these skills, in which I developed during my second placement at a specialist support centre for adults with learning disabilities.…

When I was eleven years old I was diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder. I had a hard time coping with the changes in my mood. Part of my healing process consisted of trying many different medications, therapies, and developing the desire to heal. During this time, friends I had for many years pushed me away, and although I felt alone and confused at times, I came out thriving. Bipolar Disorder is a mood disorder thought to be caused by chemical imbalances in the brain that can result in extreme swings in mood—from manic highs to depressive lows. To be diagnosed with bipolar disorder, you must have experienced a high period (mania). Bipolar mania is described as an “extreme high,” or feeling unusually great. Most people with bipolar disorder when ill or when symptomatic experience more lows than highs. Unfortunately, the lows I experienced were so extreme that the friends I thought would be by my side through anything chose to follow other kids and use my disorder to bully me creating deeper depression. Initially, I felt stigmatized by my diagnosis. Most people I encountered either didn’t know what bipolar was or how to interact with someone suffering with the disorder. Teachers, peers, and family members had a hard time knowing what to say or how to act around me. I started to feel like I was no longer my own person but just one big disaster and my mood swings became even more extreme as a result. Eventually, I grew tired of feeling sorry for myself and began my quest for the right medication, vitamins, nutrition, psychological and spiritual health and wellbeing. I found my inner strength and courage. I put my energy into school, new friendships and family and started…

A friend recently told me “Don’t let the things you can’t control, control you”. I realized how much this small piece of advice relates to my life as an African American woman. I can’t control the fact that I don’t live with- or even know- my father. I can’t control how society perceives people of color. But I control what I do. I have discovered that I embody the ability to beat the odds given to a black, fatherless girl. I can be who I want to be with hard work and determination.…
