Why I Want To Pursue A Biomedical Science Degree
Biomedical Science is constantly evolving as new advances are made, which will play a vital role in all aspects of healthcare in the future. Studying Biology and Chemistry at AS Level has deepened my insight into these subjects, making me realise that a Biomedical Science degree will allow me to pursue a career that will be both stimulating and rewarding. Discovering how the human body functions at a molecular level and understanding the concepts involved in physiology, neuroscience and biochemistry will enable me to achieve my aspirations.
I regularly read ‘Biological Sciences Review’ and ‘The Big Picture’ to keep up to date with advances in Biomedicine and how these can have an impact on our understanding of health and disease. Having read ‘Brain Story’ by Susan Greenfield I have learnt which parts of the brain are involved in memory and emotion, the impact neurodegenerative diseases have on the brain and the research currently being undertaken to create artificial brains, further enhancing my interest in neuroscience. Researching for my EPQ on the skin condition psoriasis has enabled me to explore a subject of interest. It has also given me a greater understanding of how this condition affects the immune system and the rate in which skin cells reproduce, as well as how different forms of treatment like retinoids, methotrexate and biologics act to …show more content…
I have particularly enjoyed learning about the structure of different biological molecules and how this is vital for their function, the different physiological reactions taking place in our bodies and the role of DNA and RNA. I have also enjoyed developing my knowledge of organic chemistry and the mechanisms behind nucleophilic substitution and electrophilic addition. Maths has further enhanced my analytical and problem solving skills, which will be advantageous whilst studying this
