Personal Review: Will He Come To America?
I can’t believe that Amir graduated high school and is now going to junior college. He thinks that he will be “discovered” and will make a living off of stories that he makes up. I do not understand how he thinks that he will make money off of words on paper. I wish you were here so he could see that you support him through his decisions, especially the ones I am not as passionate about as he is. Amir talks about how he wishes you could come to America because we both miss you and it would make all of our lives better.

    Amir, is the central character and is shaped both in character and intellect by power. He is privileged and wealthy, but also steeped in jealousy and cowardice. He is selfish and guilty of abhorrent behaviors. The one positive strength Amir has is his friendship with Hassan. Considered best friends this is a friendship that is generally one-sided with Hassan showing the loyalty and trust. There is an ongoing conflict for this friendship because Amir shares paternal heritage with Hassan. Hassan was born into servitude and thus Baba, the boys’ father, cannot lay claim to Hassan’s heritage. The Afghan traditions and culture pose a conflict for Baba regarding Hassan. Hassan for his part is loyal, forgiving, and an all-around pleasant person to be with. The two boys are drawn to each other naturally. Hassan is the family servant and never wavers in his loyalty to the family even with the knowledge that he should be considered part of it. At the same time, Baba struggles with his own morals and the rigid Afghani traditions. He is proud and determined but also emotionally detached from Amir. I was very surprised of all the information that I learned about the political struggle in Afghanistan, and especially surprised that this was a story of your childhood in Kabul from then on.From your childhood, Kabul seemed to be a very wonderful place. I was fascinated by the fact that instead of supermarkets, you had a bazaar to get all of your groceries. I also found it interesting that unlike The United States, the season everyone looked forward to was school offs, and exciting seasons of winter opposed to Summer. Aside from all of the facts that I learned, your book has truly touched my heart. Although Amir’s cruel charecteristics had made me angry in the beginning of the story, by reading the last page his bravery had left me in tears.     After years of misguidance, Amir realizes that on the road to friendship and loyalty, one must be able to stand up for what they believe in, something many are too afraid to do. When they were young, Amir and Hassan, Amir's slave, were confronted by the neighborhood bully, Assef. They happened to be in a remote location. Afraid of being hurt, Amir wondered if anyone would be able to hear his scream. “'Just let us go Assef,' I said, hating the way my voice trembled”(Hosseini 41). If not for the lethal threat of Hassan's slingshot, Assef might not have left without giving them a beating. This event portrays one of Amir's weaknesses, which contrasts his adult persona. It shows how he thinks about himself in situations that threaten his well being. A strong person would not have assumed that the only option was to admit defeat. Hassan managed to put aside his fears to overcome Assef's superiority; which was the opposite of Amir. Amir's weakness did not go unnoticed in his daily life. Baba, Amir's father, was able to see this in him: “A boy who can't stand up for himself becomes a man who can't stand up for anything”(22). Baba's statement is not so much of a fact as it is a challenge. He does not believe that Amir will ever change, but there is never a way to be absolutely sure of what the future holds.
