Personal Narrative: Zooming Down Highway
Zooming down Highway One; shades on, sunroof open, sun beating down, the breeze blowing through my hair. I look to my right and grin at my mom, with Miami in the rearview mirror we’re ready for our adventure through the Florida Keys to begin. The everglade terrain, swampy green pools with gnarly mangrove roots disappearing under the surface, mesmerizes me. The only thing separating the swampy environment from the highway is a chain link fence and a strip of grass. I keep my eyes glued to the window endlessly searching, trying to spot my first alligator.
“Do you think the fence is there to keep the alligators off the road?” I ask my mom.
“I suppose it’s there to keep any wild animal from getting to the highway, “ she responds. We continue

I love the feeling of the boat rocking and jumping as it hits the waves of another vessel, though I wouldn’t want to try and walk during it. As we approach the dive spot I start getting ready. I zip up my wetsuit and take a seat in front of my tank. I buckle on my flippers and weight belt and proceed to strap on my vest. It’s been awhile since she last Scuba dived. I take out my regulator, “You ready?” I ask her. She nods her head in response. As we deflate our BCs and begin our descent I notice mom starts to freak out . She’s flailing in the water with hand on her regulator. She motions for me to come back up to the

I broke my arm today while getting on the freight train. Thank God I still have an arm unlike some of the other I have meet who have lost an arm or leg and some even know someone who has lost their life ( Riding the Rails). I have done this a couple of time now and I shouldn't have been so anxiety about it but I was. I hide under the track outside the yard like I normally do, waiting for the train to reach momentum so I could get on. I forgot to check for the bull guards who are hired to keep hoboes from jumping on freight. I guess I got too comfy with my environment( Riding the rails). Right when I was getting on the trains, I heard the bull guards yelling and chasing after me. It threw me off my balance and I nearly fell off the train. I…

I let my right arm hang loose to cover it with the magnesium powder I carry with me. I draw a shaky breath and look up to the top of the invigorating boulder. I always keep this poem and picture in my wallet. I take it everywhere with me because it means quite a lot to me in two very different ways. One of those ways is because it holds sentimental value. When I was younger I learned to read very late in life and I was always so embarrassed of that. My father knew that I was struggling and bought me the book, Where the Sidewalk Ends. It is a book full of poems and little pictures written by Shel Silverstein. I remember opening the book to ta random page, and it was the page with this poem. I then remember my dad asking me to read it to him. I was so uncomfortable, even thought I was just going to be reading to my dad. He gave me some words of encouragement, and even thought I was not able to read…

Ever since I was born, I was a military brat. Not knowing where to call home, or if any place could be home, I moved. I moved six times, four of those places were towns that nobody could think about. Germany, North Carolina, Alaska, North Carolina, Germany, and Alaska, yet no place to call home. May 22, 1999, my first day on this world; Kronach hospital had its first American baby in their hands, yet they acted like I was a different species. As a baby, I did not know that the handle was moving, the grill top had smashed my thumb. Ever since that event, I now have a starfish mark on the side of my right thumb from where the stiches were.…
