Personal Narrative: Two Husbands
I recently overheard two spouses talking about their situations while standing in line at the Shoppette. I was appalled at what they were saying. I wasn’t trying to eavesdrop on their conversation but these two women were talking so loud that I’m pretty sure the customers at the back of store probably even heard them! I was standing right behind them. Spouse A stated the following, “This woman in my FRG (Family Readiness Group) had the nerve to ask if I wanted to go to lunch with her? I’m friendly with her but I’m not about to be seen with a junior enlisted soldier’s wife.” I literally felt nauseous. Why in the world would she say something like that? Spouse B just threw her head back and cackled. It was this really irritating and annoying

In its own unhappy-making way, this pattern of interaction is as classic as a Little Black Dress, and it has a moniker and an acronym: Demand/Withdraw or DM/W. It isn’t a new pattern, of course—the so-called “nagging” wife shows up in folklore all over the world, in many varied forms, but research shows that DM/W is a powerful predictor of marital dissatisfaction and divorce. It’s also associated with depression, physical abuse, and the mental health symptoms of young adult children, according to a meta-analysis review conducted by Paul Schrodt and his co-authors. Of all the troubling relational patterns, Demand/Withdraw is truly worthy of HazMat status.…

Over the course of my long life (or lives depending on how you look at it) I have been known by many names. And not all of them translate exactly. My latest and last one is Gracen. I do not know how old I am, nor do I really care. All that matters is that I get two square meals a day and a warm bed at night. An occasional pet behind the ears is nice too. It’s times like this, late at night in my bed, when I reminisce back to where it all began.…

My family environment has influenced me a lot especially when my siblings were born. I am the oldest out of five, so I'm always look up to. I always had to make a good example and never show that I was scared. When my mom and stepdad had to work, I would take care of them until they came back while getting my schoolwork and practicing my instrument done too. I never really had a chance to be a kid, I always had to be a mother to my siblings. I would always wish for more time in the day for myself, Although watching them grow up from when they were small and started school for the first time made up for that loss time. I live up to a quote, "Be the master of your future, not the slave of your problems." My senior year I had to stop being…

Military discipline and effectiveness is built on the foundation of obedience to orders given by senior leadership or grades appointed over you. It’s not insubordinate conduct if the order given is unethical or illegal; neither is refusing to perform an order that is within the power of the person giving the order. Many superiors feel that the line of verbal contempt can be broken on many different levels. One can only assume that foul language, and language that may impose threat, violence or outright disobedience will ultimately fall in to the category of verbal contempt and disorderly language. A simple verbal disagreement with no foul language or violent intent can be considered as verbal contempt and or disorderly language to the NCO. An enlisted member can be subject to being punished by this article just on the superior’s thoughts on whether or not the accused was in verbal contempt. It was the year 2012, when I experienced a life-changing event, which led to my transition from childhood into adulthood. This event was my parent’s divorce. During this time I was scared and hurt, because my parents’ separation not only meant the parting of my parents-but parting from the life I’ve always known as a child. The separation moved at an almost mockingly lackadaisical pace. Months tediously dragged on, and even after the legal separation my life was never as it once was. I started to appreciate the people who were present in my life and how precious family stability is. The idea of losing my mother or father to divorce made me realize that this could have easily been a loss due to an illness. I grew to appreciate that I am lucky to have them in my life period. It was at this time that I seriously thought about working in health care; a field that aims to prolong human lives. This event of my childhood that some might even call traumatic, bettered me, and brought me into the adult world.…
