Personal Narrative: The Game Of Anxiety
Throughout the majority of my life I have suffered from anxiety. Social situations that were easy for other people were extremely difficult for me. I wasn’t able to order my own food, get down at stores or even school by myself. Any public environment had me trembling; However, all that changed when I got in to high school and joined the H.M.King Color guard where I met Tori Ramirez who essentially was my captain.
As a freshman in high school, my anxiety was uncontrollable. At the time, Tori was a senior and my captain. From day one she made it clear that being shy was not an option. As a member of the team, you were to perform Friday nights in front of hundreds of people, even more at competitions. Just thinking about it would make me uneasy and send my nervous system into a downward spiral.

One of those exercises being a game of improv. During this game you are to act out a character or object from any given scenario . Whether you were to act out a tree, a baby or even a lion, you were to make your character conceivable to your audience.
Over the span of three going on four years, Tori has taught me that if you believe you are something enough, you will become it. By pretending to be this charismatic character on the field, my nervous disposition became lesser and my confidence has improved. The most important thing I learned was whether you think you can or think you can't do something, you're right both ways.
Tori is a great teacher because her constructive criticism, fiery passion and drive to teach color guard is something you can not find in many teachers today no matter what the subject is. Her love for color guard is genuine and to her it’s more than just a job. She doesn’t just teach us a routine to entertain an audience, she helps us grow as a team and as individuals. She teaches us import things beyond color guard that I will forever carry with

“I can’t wait to be a senior” was something I would say whenever I walked into my anatomy class full of seniors who did nothing at all but every time I would Jesslyn would stop me, cock her eyebrow, make a ‘you are kidding me right?’ face and say “be careful what you wish for” and I’m now understanding what she meant. Learning responsibility, independence, and how to deal with stress is the most difficult for me coming into senior year.…

When I went in for my appointment with a mental health counselor, all I was given was a name, Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD). After today, this diagnosis became a part of who I was. From here on, I need to focus on becoming the best version of myself. Sometimes it is too much for me to deal with on my own, so I put my worries onto other people. I can’t do that anymore because I lost so many friends from this. Today was a start. Even though this is just a step, I am still moving…

The social-emotional domain is most of interest to me. As Humans we interact pretty much throughout our lives, our emotions often play a large role on how we develop socially and how that ties to our emotions. From birth we gradually start to develop these relationships with the people around us. Over time this process of learning to communicate, share, and interact with others takes many years to develops. We continue to develop these skills into our teenage years, and even as young adults. So with that I do believe that the development in this domain is mostly a continuous one.…

Having anxiety has really changed my life, but without it I would not be the person I am today. Anxiety and Panic attacks are very intricate to understand and explain if the person doesn't have it, they don't understand it’s out of my control. And technically it’s me vs. anxiety and panic attacks and i don’t alway win,but i have found ways around it and not to hamper anymore.. This was a big challenge in my life that was worth overcoming like Odysseus with his tasks. I had to figure out what I had, what causes it, and how to deal with it. This has all helped tremendously in the long…

“You’ll never be able to run long distances again” A quote from my doctor when I was first diagnosed with both a tarsal and calcaneal coalition in my left foot. The first thought that came to my head was start digging my grave now. Monday through Saturday for me are spent at the gym or on the tennis court. If I am not training, I am teaching the sport I continue to admire since fifth grade. Those nine words rang through my ears like fingernails on a chalk board. He proceeded to place me in a cast then a few weeks later into an air cast. I viewed this as a small bump in the road and continued to strengthen my upper body and core despite my highly fashionable boot. Two months later my highly optimistic self headed to my “final” doctor appointment to be told I need to continue to wear the air cast. That day I recall telling myself “deep breaths Grace”…

After my second year in high school, I made a decision that would turn out to be life changing. This decision wasn’t life changing in the way that getting married or going to college would be, but I really learned a lot about myself that summer. What I’m about to tell you is what happened when I switched from Marching Band to Football. I will explain to you why this switch was such a big deal to me and what I learned about myself from it. Switching from Marching Band to Football after my Sophomore year of high school changed the way I saw myself because I found I have a strong enough will to follow my heart despite controversy with others, I have a strong desire to be in control of my life, and I have an aggressive side that had not shown itself before.…

I was extremely exhausted, but the relief was absolutely amazing. At first sight I fell in love with you. Not for how you look, just for who you are. I never thought I could feel affection like this. Like many, I could use this opportunity to brag about my academic or extracurricular achievements, but in doing so I would be omitting a defining factor of my life thus far-anxiety. While not completely aware of it, I have spent a majority of my highschool career in a state of constant anxiety. Similar to others who suffer from generalized anxiety disorder, I am prone to feeling overwhelmed when making decisions or presenting myself in communal settings. As a result, I found myself overwhelmed and struggling with the start of secondary school. My disquieted tendencies made me wary of expanding my comfort zone, in turn stunting my own personal growth over the past few years. Subsequently, I have spent a long time attempting to beat my anxiety.…

As the car passed by everyone looked at it with amazement as the never seen a car pass from this part of the street. The bus hits a bump on the road I am begging to rationalize who much work will it take to achieve greatness to struggle to overcome adversity.…
