Personal Narrative-Shaped Bathroom Mirror
As I stare boldly at myself in the partially shattered bathroom mirror, I don’t understand. Why did I do this? I look down at my arms and almost pass out. Suddenly, someone knocks at the door, but I don’t answer. “Hello?” The person yells, I recognize the voice. Eventually, I fell over, hitting my head on the towel rack.

I soon wake up, and it seems like the next morning, because of the sun shining brightly through the window to my right. Turning to my left, I look down and see bandages on my arm. “Dang it.” I begin to assemble myself and stand up, removing IVs from my arms.

This chapter starts up in the hospital. Esther is having a very hard time in the hospital since her suicide attempt. With the stories she describes, it is very apparent that people are looking at her as if she is a freak. Esther looked at herself in the mirror in the hospital and could not believe the face staring back at her. Her face was bruised and her hair was gone. I think at that moment it was more than just looking at herself. She realized all the bruises and the haircut, but she also realized how everything has affected her. Her face was representing her feelings and emotional state as well, bruised and beat up. Since she was so shocked by her appearance, she dropped the mirror. When Esther dropped the mirror the nurses became upset…

Barbara Tuchman’s A Distant Mirror is about as entertaining as a history book can get or should be. Tuchman is a captivating storyteller and the quality of her history of France in the 14th century speaks for itself as the book has remained in print after 25 years. Famous for her engaging, narrative style that makes history flow like a thrilling novel, Tuchman presents a comprehensive review of 14th century Europe (via France, the dominant European power of the Middle Ages). She emphasizes three main events that dominate the lives of Europeans in the 14th century: the Plague, the Hundred Years' War and the Papal Schism. Despite this large-scale vision, she also succeeds in bringing this "distant mirror" as close to the reader as possible.…

It was morning, but something was not right. I felt strange like my body was not my own. I was in the same room, yet something was different. I got up looked in the mirror and was astonished at what I saw. I felt that what I was looking at could not be a mirror because the images I saw were not of me. I saw a poorly shaven man of about twenty-five staring back at me. He was thin and looked like death had barely escaped him. He was scary, although what scared me the most is thinking about what had happened to…

My hospital bed was ice cold and the bleak and empty white walls depressed me as the uncomforting thought that I would have to stay here for maybe another week brought tears to my eyes. The usual and oppressive smell of disinfectant lingered in the room as I recalled that night in my head, trying to convince myself it wasn’t my fault, as I had done everyday since the accident. It was the day everything changed and my life was turned upside down. Forever.…

She stares at herself in the mirror, examining every self inflicted scar from picking scabs. Her skin tone is grey and dull. Her hair has gotten oily and unkempt. She stopped caring about her looks and was not aware of it. There are age spots on her face that seem to have appeared over night. She touches her face and strokes the bags under her eyes with her finger tips. She looks now at what used to be a beautiful smile and cannot believe that her teeth have decayed, they are almost gone. It saddens her and she looks away. She feels ashamed of what she has become. She looks back at the mirror only to be looking into her eyes. With a hoarse voice she utters the words, “How did this happen?”…

When patients start to get very sick, they often seem to fall apart all at once. The reverse is also true. Within a few days, the patient’s pacemaker could be removed, and she awoke from her coma. About six months later I was again in my office. The door opened and in walked a gloriously fit woman. After some cheery words of appreciation, the father and son asked to…
