Personal Narrative: Scuba Diving
Memorable Event
I have always aspired to be a certified scuba diver. My ultimate goal is to cage dive with great white sharks off the coast of Guadalupe Island. One of the biggest attractions I have to scuba diving is that I am fascinated by the exhilarating sights and sounds that can only be experienced underwater. Scuba diving allows a person to step foot into a world that only few people get to experience.
My journey began a year ago, when my cousins were first certified to be scuba divers. I was envious of them because that is something I wanted to take part in one day. I hounded them with question after question, but the one question I asked them most, was how it felt to experience the ability to breathe underwater. I often wondered if attempting to breath underwater would be a nerve racking and scary experience, but they told me that it was an unusual, but exciting one nun the less. After years of anticipation, I finally got to the chance to become a certified scuba diver.
I began to meet other divers from this area who shared the same passion for diving. The dive shop in Flowood, MS. is where I met the people that taught me how to dive, and ultimately helped me reach my

The dive shop in Flowood, MS. is where I met the people that taught me how to dive, and ultimately helped me reach my dream. The dive master at the shop is a woman named Martha, that quickly became my mentor and friend. Martha has a deep passion for diving and she strives to help others achieve their goals. The shop had a dive already scheduled this summer to cage dive with great white sharks, which is something that I had always dreamed of doing. After completing the first dive in Alabama, I was able to join the group that was headed to Guadalupe Island. The excitement level leading up to this trip was something I will never forget. In preparing to go, there were several things I had to make sure I

Being able to go on the Key Largo trip this year would be amazing! I remember hearing my cousins and even some friends that have gone in the past years talk about how much fun they had, and how it was a once in a lifetime experience. They told me that once the opportunity came around to take it, so I did. I can remember my first time ever snorkeling. I was six years old vacationing with my family in the Bahamas, Nassau to be exact. I can remember my sister and me holding hands, counting to three, jumping off the boat and into the water without a care in the world. It was so much fun free diving down to the reefs, but we weren’t allowed to touch anything or we would be in big trouble. They also gave us each a bag of food to feed the fish in hopes that they would get close to us. Once we were all in the boat one of the tour guides jumped in the water and brought a starfish and conch shell on board. At first he wouldn’t let me touch it because I pronounced the name wrong. The animals were returned safely to the water and placed back on the reefs. The next year’s vacation was the Dominican Republic. This was also the first time I went swimming with sharks and stingrays. The only thing I did not like about this trip was the fact that the sharks and sting rays were stuck in a cage. But it was also the first time I got to swim with dolphins in a controlled environment to ensure no harm to the animals or myself. The last vacation was snorkeling in Cancun Mexico. Even my grandma went on this trip with us. This was the last time I went snorkeling, other than in my pool, but it’s not the same experience. By going on this Key Largo trip I am hoping to relive and make some of my own memories my senior year. I am also looking forward to experimenting and observing all the different animals Marine Lab has to offer. Maybe I can also find a career in the marine biology field seeing…

Screams pierced through the salty, humid, California air. Intimidating rides towered above me, even the thought of riding them terrifying me. Thundering waves crashed as a backdrop for the “Belmont Park” sign that about touched the clouds. Excitement and anticipation coursed through my veins. My palms turned clammy and we made our way through the never ending line to get our tickets. Wafting through the light breeze was the sweet aroma of funnel cakes, cotton candy, and hotdogs. Looking around me I knew one thing, I was determined to go on the three most daunting rides, the Giant Dipper, a hair-raising roller coaster, the Beach Blaster, sickening my stomach at the thought of it and lastly the dark looming room of extreme laser tag.…

One of the professions I have a lot of interest in would be marine biology. I took the high school course on it last year and I had a lot of fun in the class. The critters were adorable and I was able to play with all of them, whenever I wanted. My favorite, honestly, would have to be the brittle sea star. It was so cool!…

I've never been an "outdoors" experience kind of person. Maybe, it's because I'm very sedentary and prefer to stay inside to read and enjoy tranquility. I avoid all types of chaos and crowded places. Nevertheless, my visit to the Camuy River Cave Park (back in 2004) was refreshing and enriching in knowledge, historically, scientifically and spiritually. That experience brought the best out of me, as a human being and a nature lover, by giving the chance of experiencing a whole new level of peace and tranquility.…

“We all stray from time to time….and when you do, OWN IT! If you deny it….you are giving up control again.” This can teach a lesson to people struggling with drugs and alcohol. If you deny that you have a problem, you will continue to let these things control your life, but if you own up to it, you can help yourself or get help from others. The quote, from the “I don’t know the Bible…” paragraph, “‘Well done, my good and faithful servant,”’ reflects what I believe in and what I have learned. Growing up I heard many people tell me, “God first, others second, and yourself last.” First of all, these two quotes are telling me to live a faithful life by putting God first. Also, to put others before me and serve them just like Jesus did.…

When I woke up that friday I was super excited because I knew that I was leaving the country and going to Paradise. We did some shopping in the morning but we had to be on the cruise by four p.m. When the cab pulled up to the boat my jaw dropped. It was a carnival cruise ship that I thought was the size of the titanic. We boarded the ship and went to our room to relax. The ship had more than thirteen floors and multiple decks and pools. The first day I got lost each time I had to go back to my room because the ship was that big. First they had a life jacket drill which just explained what to do if something was too ever happen to the ship. After that that’s when the deck party began. They had karaoke, dancing and just little meet & greet activates. Next thing you knew it was time for bed and then the next morning is when I woke up in the Bahamas. I thought I was dreaming because it looked like a scene from a movie or a picture from a calendar.…

After we were all on the boat we had to go through a beautiful inlet that lead out into the ocean. We were then instructed on how put our life jackets and harnesses on. The instructor decided that I was going to be the first one to go up in the air. I made my way to the front of the boat and sat down on the deck so he could hook the parachute to my harness. Without a warning he let the parachute go and then I was ascending up into the air almost felt like the speed of light! As I was going up, he shook the line to scare me. Finally when I reached 500 feet, I could see the shore line. It was a breath taking view. I could see giant sea turtles and I even saw a shark. I was in the air about 30 minutes. Then I started descending down. When I was close to the boat, he dunked me into the same water where I had just moments earlier seen the shark and the sea turtles.…
