The healthiness of coffee has been a topic of debate for many years. Being one of the most common drinks in the world, people have argued all sorts of positions in regards to its benefits or detriments to their health. Kris Gunnars’ article, “13 Health Benefits of Coffee, Based on Science” argues that coffee is indeed healthy, and provides thirteen reasons why. Jim Dillan’s article, “7 Negative Effects of Coffee & The Healthy Drink You Should Replace it With,” argues the opposite, claiming that coffee is overall harmful to the human body. Although coffee has both positive and negative side effects, Gunners’ article is much more informative, due to its abundance of citations, its large number of well-developed points, and the fact that the article remains consistent with its title.…

It was a bright sunny Wednesday afternoon and I was walking towards my car. I got out of class early and was heading home to get myself ready to spend time with my bright and intelligent students. Sometimes when I get out of class my body feels overwhelmed and tired. Perhaps it feels this way because of all the things that are going on in my life like family, friendship, relationship, community service, and homework assignments. I feel like I am very busy that I often do not have time for myself. However when I arrived to El Jardin that quickly changes. The students that I work with on Wednesday fill my life with positive attitude and energy that I often forget about the worries and stress that I encounter during the day. I really love my Wednesday shift more than my Tuesday shift because I have a stronger connection and attachment towards the two girls that I work with. On Wednesday’s, I work with two bright and intelligent 6th grade girls named Arisa and Janet. Both of them have special qualities and a sweet kind heart.…

Today wasn't so easy. I forgot I was on a no carb diet and I made half of a bagel. I took one bite of it and felt automatically guilt, then I threw away the rest of the bagel. Then for lunch I went to tropical smoothie, it was so good, For dinner, I went to Panera and had a salad. I noticed today that I spent 20 dollars on food and I wasn't happy because I’m already a broke college student. After completing the abstinence phase, I confirmed that I did not want to cut caffeine from my diet completely. I change my goal, and I feel good with my decision. The reason of my decision is that I do not want to add stress on myself at the moment; and I am allowing myself to take a step at the time. Another variable affecting my decision is the fact that I start to quit eating fast food three months ago, and it has been stressful. I don’t want to add to many goals to my repertoire that I will not be able to accomplish; I prefer to do small permanent steps.…

Everyday is a new day for me. I wake up everyday pondering whether or not I will be able to get through the day without a single complaint. As I woke up this morning, I went straight to my coffee machine to make my coffee as I always do. What was strange is that every time I tried to start it up, it wouldn't start. After realizing that my coffee machine, my most prized possession, was broken, I quickly got ready with my signature messy bun and went to the nearest coffee shop. I was going to get my coffee. After ordering my favorite coffee at Dunn Brothers, I was not happy to see that they messed up my order. I went to my work and hoped that the not-my-order-coffee would kick in soon. This day has already started off horribly and I did not…

But why would a 17 year old girl believe in caffeine, a chemical usually depended upon by truck drivers and stressed out adults working a daily 9-5? This is because of a 17 year old girl’s awareness of the time she has on this earth. I was told by my grandmother to never waste a moment of your life. And yes, I know, everyone knows that our days are numbered, but all of your days may not be healthy ones. You are only truly young once, my grandmother told me, and your health and way of life can slip from your grasp in the blink of an eye. Be rebellious,…

Last summer I was constantly reminded of the dreaded family visit to Aunt Martha’s farm. It annoyed me that she had a colorful garden that needed constant attention. I also sunburned easily but Aunt Martha didn’t care I was in pain. When I was at Aunt Martha’s I found it necessary to wake up at 5:45 which is the same time I wake up for school.
