Personal Narrative: Occupy Wall Street
Wall Street is evil and corrupt… or at least that's all I hear from news headlines and organizations like Occupy Wall Street. After consistently hearing about corrupt brokers and managers like Bernie Madoff and Jordan Belfort, I began to buy into this facade. I enjoyed following the stock market, but I didn’t want to pursue it as a career out of fear of social repercussions. Last summer, this all changed. A few of my friends and I were awarded a free trip to Washington D.C. for placing fifth in a national stock market competition. While there, my views did a complete one-eighty. I met traders and managers from big investment banks such as RBC, Morgan Stanley, and UBS. They talked to me about what they do, and how it ties into the rest of the stock market. I anticipated them to be cold, arrogant, and disdainful.Yet, to my surprise, not a single one of them seemed to be evil, corrupt, or in possession of a single malicious thought. They were delighted to share their career with a group of high schools students. Of all the people I met, Mr. Marshall, a senior portfolio manager from Morgan Stanley, stands out in my mind; he was extremely humble and spent extra time talking to me about trading strategies, such as technical analysis. …show more content…
After any catastrophic event, minority groups become the target of nonsensical hate based on the actions of a minority of the minority. Just as police officers have recently received bad publicity for the actions of a few, the 2008 “Great Recession” has lead to big banks and hedge funds becoming the scapegoat for the frustration of the masses. The good people who “work on Wall Street” are the reason that putting money into a 401(k), IRA, or other retirement account is better than just having liquid assets sitting in a bank account growing at today’s near zero interest

During high school, I worked part time as a player attendant at the local country club golf course. During my time there, I formed a relationship with a member who later became a very important mentor of mine. Late into my senior year, he suggested I look into Investment Banking and loaned me his favorite book, Den of Thieves. The book was thick, nearly 600 pages, but told the story of Michael Milken and the insider trading of the 1980’s perfectly. As a high school senior with little business knowledge, I understood maybe 50% of the content, but the book sparked my initial interest in banking. Pursuing this interest, I found the booth for the Investment Banking Club at the Kelley Carnival and eagerly signed-up. Through attending the meetings…

I have heard many people around me saying that you should go walk the Brooklyn Bridge at least once and I never have a chance to fulfill it. Through this opportunity, I called my friend up to accompany me to walk the Bridge for the first time. Based on the information from the history of the United States, the Brooklyn Bridge was completed in 1883 and considered as an engineering marvel for that time. It remains as one of the oldest suspension bridges in the United States. During mid-1800s, the ferries connected Manhattan and Brooklyn. Ferries was a major convenience transportation for us, the people of that day were used to oars and sails to ride boats. These faster, more reliable ferries helped Brooklyn grow until the bridge was build. When…

Wall Street by Oliver Stone gives you a great perspective on real life situations that can be occurring in the world around us. Bud, a new-comer to the stock market world, was eager to get himself out there and be a successful stockbroker. Bud became engaged with Gordon Gekko, a successful shareholder and business man. Gordon took advantage of the resources and insider information Bud had with the airline company his father worked at, leading to insider trading. This became an issue because Bud believed he could trust Gordon that he would not sell off the airline company to make more money, but indeed Gordon did betraying Bud. To Bud, this was something unexpected, personal and he was completely blind-sided by the situation, but to Gordon it was just a business deal. The movie really gives you an angle on real life situations that could potentially end devastatingly. In Wall Street, there are two quotes that fit my view on the Stock Market and one that does not.…

If I had harnessed the ability to travel through time, I would choose to experience 1960’s Washington D.C.. The city was struck with such large amounts of heartbreak, but at the same time, many people had more courage than they’ve ever had. I would spend the first couple of hours exploring the riots on the roads, the segregation present in the shops, and just how people felt in this time.…

My political viewpoint has changed dramatically since I was first introduced to politics. I come from a democratic family, where it is strongly believed that it is the government’s responsibility to care for all people and that the government knows what is best for all people. Every voting season, my parents vote for a democratic president and explain to me the reasoning behind their decision. It was not until I was in the tenth grade that I realized that I did not hold the same political beliefs as my parents. After taking several political quizzes and extensively researching the bevy of political parties, I now know that I am an independent. What is an independent? An independent is an individual politician not affiliated to any political…

The 2016 Presidential Election was easily the most negative Election in recent history. Apart from my policy disagreements with President Elect Trump, I am morally repulsed by his conduct. My Hispanic friends were offended by the insinuation a that Mexican immigrants were criminals and a unwanted burden on the United States. My female friends were terrified by his misogyny and open, joking (at best) attitude towards sexual assault. I was disgusted by his disdain for the environment and the truth.…

You have expressed yourself so well. Thank you for waiting a day before responding. I too, have waited, not just two days to express my view but months. During these months, I have been caught between” a rock and a hard place”. You see, my oldest will vote for the very first time in our American democracy for president. I feel sorry for him. The first time I voted, I voted for Reagan. Time has advanced to a point where he has no choice. He has to make a decision, with his vote, that is not good either way. He has watched the news, he has listened to his parents along with his American Government teacher. He has also been able to discern for himself. Yet, he will vote. Why? Because we, in our family, believe our country is still great and those…

I always keep this poem and picture in my wallet. I take it everywhere with me because it means quite a lot to me in two very different ways. One of those ways is because it holds sentimental value. When I was younger I learned to read very late in life and I was always so embarrassed of that. My father knew that I was struggling and bought me the book, Where the Sidewalk Ends. It is a book full of poems and little pictures written by Shel Silverstein. I remember opening the book to ta random page, and it was the page with this poem. I then remember my dad asking me to read it to him. I was so uncomfortable, even thought I was just going to be reading to my dad. He gave me some words of encouragement, and even thought I was not able to read…

You can earn a degree to become a stock market expert. People spend years analyzing the spikes and drops. It is an honor to ring the New York stock exchange bell. But as Marian Wright Edelman says, “We need to create a new Dow Jones...with it’s stock in children’s lives.” The United States of America is one of the richest countries in the world, both the NYSE and the Nasdaq are part of the renowned “$1 Trillion Dollar Club”, however 33.2% of children in the United States live below the federal poverty line, or 1 in 3 children (Desjardins; Ingraham). In order to fix these issues plauging America, many people form what are called special interest groups. Marian Wright Edelman founded one of these…

As we know that the institutes such as Harvard teaches their students to “Schmooze” to get a job at wall street. The recruiters at Wall street are also demanding for something similar. According to recruiters and people working at Wall Street, they play the role of “master of the universe”. So, Ho state that, “to play the role of “master of the universe” requires not only especially strong full dose of self-confidence and institutional legitimization, but also a particular set of beliefs regarding Wall Street’s role in the world and one’s own role on Wall Street” (168). This means that recruiters too support the teaching of the institutes, as they think they are the most important people in the country, and they control everything going on in the country. So, when students see themselves as the “master of the universe”, they start thinking that they are dominant over everyone else. This is one of the main reason why all investment bankers want to work at Wall Street. As the recruiters had set their bars so high that everyone wants to be a part of that community. But, the recruiters follow old stereotypical path set by other recruiters in the past, and thus they only give the chance to be the part of this community to only students of selected institutes, which…

I've sat for a long time. I've never known what to say about me. Is he like a monk: quiet, and contemplative? Is he like a fighter: full of bold pride, and anger? I've always been curious, asked myself these questions. There's never been a solid answer. People are too fluid for that. Defined moment by moment, we're allotted some freedom in what we do and who we can be.…
