Personal Narrative: My Year As An American Studier
TELL ME ABOUT YOU

Remember when Shrek told Donkey, “Ogres are like onions. They have layers”? The same is true, of course, of humans. As the year goes along, we’ll learn more and more about you. But because we’re going to be spending the next nine months together, let’s get started. The quicker we can learn a little about you, the better. Here are a few questions that will help us get acquainted. Type a response to each one. Provide as much or little detail as you wish.

1.What are your feelings about beginning your year as an American Studier?

I’m tired of learning about countries that don’t necessarily involve me. I can’t wait to learn more about the country that I live in.

2. What extracurricular activities will take up a lot of your time this year?

What are your hobbies, talents, or interests? How do you like to spend your spare time?

I love listening to music. I also paint things sometimes.

5. What makes you different from most of your peers?

I don’t mind presenting in front of the class, even though I’m not a good public speaker. I know that it is something that I will need to use for the rest of my life so I would like to master it.

6. What is your American Dream?

My American dream is to graduate college and get a job. However, what matters most is enjoying the freedom that I already have in America.

7. Tell us about the best teacher you ever had. What made him/her a good teacher for you?

Bernadette May-Beaver was my favorite teacher I have ever had because she was very understanding of my schedule and helped out a lot with my essays.

8. Tell us about a past assignment in which your teacher saw your best work. Why did this assignment produce your best stuff?

My best assignment was an English paper I wrote for Debi Ohayon in the 10th grade and it was my best work because I loved the book that the paper was based on.

9. If we’re going to teach you this year, what’s one thing we really need to know about

I clearly remember my Algebra teacher, Mr. Craig Lipscomb. He treated every student with respect. He expected his students to follow his instruction, lest they get it wrong. I also clearly remember taking shortcuts which invariably led to incorrect answers. He would gently lead me back to his instruction and methods, which invariably led to the correct answers: Imagine that! After a few weeks, I finally understood that Mr. Lipscomb was leading me in the right direction. All I had to do was listen, follow his instructions, and do my homework.…

The best teacher I have ever worked with is, Mrs. Kristie Lemons. She is a kindergarten through fifth grade special education teacher. She is very committed to her classroom, to her children, and also her co-workers. She is very kind, loving, caring, generous and Mrs. Lemons always goes above and beyond for the classroom. She is very structured and repetitive for the sake of the children in her classroom who need daily schedules. She is always giving a 110% even if you only asked for 50%. Mrs. Lemons has great ideas that may or may not always work, but it is always in the best interest of the child or children. She believes that all children have a right to learn and can learn know no matter what their disability is, and she never gives up. Mrs. Lemons is very committed and dedicated to her school. She is always looking for new ways to help better serve the children, the parents, as well as the teachers. Her willingness to work with the parents and help them deal with the child or children's problem is amazing. She is very good at what she does;, I consider her the best of the best. She has shown me how hard it is to be a special education teacher yet how wonderful it is at the same time. She has definitely changed my life and made me want to further my education to become a special education teacher.…
