Personal Narrative: My Worst Highway In North America
We were almost through the state of North Carolina as we traveled on Interstate 95. It was rush hour and you could tell everyone was antsy and excited to get home. Cars traveled at 80 miles per hour, and some were even traveling faster than that. I could now see why it was ranked the fifth worst highway in North America. Cars were weaving in and out of traffic at over 90 miles per hour. Traffic was getting heavy. Listening to the radio, my dad and I sang along to a familiar song we both knew, “Yeah” by Usher. “Yeah! Yeah! Yeah!”, we both sang while he drove. My dad always loved this song, so we had the radio turned almost all the way up. The song ended and we turned the radio down. We had already been on the road for ten hours so we were beginning to get a little tired. It was almost 5:00 in the evening and we did not eat lunch, so we were both getting hungry as well. “Where do you want to stop for dinner?”, I asked him. My dad looked at the food signs next to the highway as I looked up places on my phone where we could grab a bite. Just as I was about to name off a few places where we could go, my phone flew out of my hand and my head jolted forward.
I put the last few of my personal items in my already overly-filled trunk and back seat of my brand-new-to-me 2004 Volvo S40. I had just gotten the car two weeks before that day and absolutely loved it. It was washed, waxed, and ready

I am so thankful that my dad and I were alright and that no one was injured in the accident. We had gotten a rental car and proceeded with our trip to Florida. I bought a 2005 Volkswagen Jetta when I got settled in and it ended being even nicer than my Volvo ever was. Now, even when bad things happen, I have started to always look for the silver lining. I believe that everything happens for a reason and when something tragic happens, it only means that there is something better in store in the

It was our last day and we were headed to the airport. I was very disappointed that I didn’t have my phone for the plane ride home. It was a long drive there and it felt like forever. For some reason my dad pulled off the interstate and pulled into a Verizon Wireless parking lot. My dad went inside and was in there for half an hour. I asked my mom “What are we doing here?”…

I woke up on another school day, dreading that I had to wake up at the crack of dawn to drive for Driver’s Ed. I do the normal routine: brush my snarled hair, get on my blue jeans, a t-shirt and brush my pearly whites. I’m then standing looking out the window, waiting for Mr. Schimp to drive up to my house in the stylish, white, Driver’s ed minivan. I hop out the front door with my backpack and then get into the driver’s seat, ready to pick out my favorite radio station, Star 106.1. I was officially ready to start my 20 minutes of driving.…

Until this school year my family and I lived, as I like to put it, on the other side of the world, by Ryan Airfield, south of Old Tucson. Every school day there was a 50 minute drive in front of me that stretch over a mountain pass and more than half a city. However, it did provide great quiet time. Time just to recap what happened that day, time to plan out the rest of the day, daydream. One overcast day, my mom and I were going home in our good ole’ reliable Passat. We had come up through the mountain pass listening to instrumental music, something I have enjoyed listening to all my life. Instrumental music always lifts my spirits because of the pure melody, of all different types of instruments coming together to make a blissful resonance. After the mountain pass, the terrain spans out before us in a somewhat flat valley, which leads into another range of even higher mountains. We rode smoothly across a stretch of this and the music was epic. I do not remember that exact piece of music that was playing, but it had a cello, violin, piano, and drums. The type of music that gives the feeling like there is something in life you must do, a battle that must be conquered, a quest that must be fulfilled. The sunset ahead of us was trying to pierce vibrant colors through a gray curtain of clouds. Some clouds rested on a mountain for a moment while others struck down at the earth with lightning bolts. These flashes of light synchronized with the beat of the music. The moment was one of many things: shock, awe, exuberance, joy, thrill, wonder, and so on. The main thought that raced through my head was “This is amazing God. You planned this! You…

Sweat came down my nose dripping like if I were sweating bullets. I was being put to the test both mentally and physically, and I never expected it to be this hard. I was being yelled at receiving all the attention to keep going and not stopping. Even though I'm going through this, I stayed motivated, thinking to myself that I can do one more. At the end of the day, I reminded myself of a Navy Seal instructor saying, “Whatever you have to do, just find an excuse to win, keep going.” Just these few words made me survive the night and find that reason to keep going. Now I know what it takes to be on the California highway patrol.…

My mum was crying. She was trying to get to the car, but no one would let her. It seemed like forever, but finally they got Ryan and two other boys out of the car and rushed them to the hospital. Mum and I followed close behind. We finally reached the hospital, but no one would help us, or tell us what was going on. Finally the doctor, who treated Ryan came and talked to mum. She was crying. She came and told me that Ryan was in a coma, and that the other two boys where seriously injured. We sat waiting for hours. The doctor came out again, to tell us that one of the other boys in the car had died, due to serious head injuries. I couldn't believe it. Ryan had always been a great driver, and he loved his car. He would often take me driving when mum was out. Mum sat crying for hours. I just sat there, thinking about everything. Ryan had so much going for him. He did well in his exams, he had a great car, great friends and now, it would all be ruined. We still didn't know what exactly had happened. The police came to talk to us. It made mum even more upset, because they where telling her that it was Ryan who was driving the car at the time of the accident. I had looked up to Ryan for all these years, and this was…

It is illegal to drive on the wrong side of the road. Everyone that drives and anyone with common sense knows that. Martinez was due in court on September 29th for being charged with possession of ecstasy, as the article states. This wouldn’t be the first time he was placed before a judge. The article clearly gives a few of the charges on Martinez’s record such as battery, drug possession, and grand theft. This man had drugs in his possession and a record to go along with his name. That makes me wonder how exactly he got onto the expressway and if he was under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Had he survived, I feel as though he would be charged with driving under the influence and, if his recklessness had resulted in any fatalities, vehicular manslaughter.…

I snap back to reality and notice that my speedometer read 30 mph. I was in a 20 mph zone. I slam on the brakes to slow down. Behind me, a driver lays on his horn to tell me how irresponsible my last decision was. I reach for the radio and turn the tuner dial until I find something upbeat and groovy. As I remove my hand, I begin to hit on the steering wheel like a drum. The steering wheel is black and coverless. It sounds good when I hit it. It is also keeping me awake at the moment. My step mom sat next to me in the passenger’s seat messing around with her phone. She never pays attention to me when I’m driving. I see a curb on the next right turn I have to take. After running over the curb, my step mom glances up to make sure I did not hit anyone. When realizing that everything is fine, she goes back to Facebook on her phone. The darkness of night was exhausting. My eyes fluttered in the beams of the yellow street lights. In a couple of blocks, I make another right turn. Then a left turn into my driveway. I turn off the engine and let out a sigh of relief. I reach for my door handle and pull, eager to go to my bed. My legs wobble underneath me as I stumble out of the truck. I am finally…

I had a neck brace around my neck and IV’s stuck all in my arms. I started to panic, I was lost, confused and scared. My best friend was there in the ambulance trying to calm me down. But still, all I could think about was the reaction of my parents when they found out what happened. Once we got to the hospital, the paramedics took me to Emergency Care. The doctors ran many tests on me: MRI’s, CAT Scans, and X-Rays, whatever test you can name – they ran on me. As I waited for my results, the doctors came in and explained to me what happened. An intoxicated driver with a gun ran the red light and hit me in a head on collision. The driver not only totaled my mother’s car but also totaled his own car too. The good thing was that he was okay. I didn’t know what to be happier about; the fact that the other driver was fine or that the accident was not my fault. Selfish right? But I’m sure if you were me at the time, you would think the same thing.…

I woke up, got dressed in uniform, and made my way to school. The day was going pretty much as usual except for the fact it was as rainy and dark out as funeral scarf. The winds were raging and the rain whispered. I made my way to one of my classes and sat there waiting for the lesson to begin. Music began to play through the speakers of the classroom and it was an old tragically hip song that I was quite familiar with. It brought me back to a time when I was younger and that extraordinary band was all that was played throughout my house on the cassette player or stereo. Music has always triggered so many memories from the past for me and always brings a smile to my face when I think of something wonderful that happened when I was around those melodies or lyrics. I instantly thought about the amazing trip my family and I took when I was 3 to P.E.I and all I could remember was going across the confederation bridge and listening to the entire tragically hip album. It blows my mind thinking of how I was such a young age but just because of this one tune heard during class, I remember a big pile of amazing memories. It turned today’s gloomy day into a happy one that’s for sure.…
