I’ve lived in the same neighborhood for as long as I can remember. I’ve gone to school with the same peers. I’ve been blessed enough to not have dealt with much turmoil in my life. I live with my supporting mother who has always been around to drop everything she’s doing to come to my aid. With all this in mind, you could come to the conclusion that I have not had to deal with a lot of change in my life nor have I ever welcomed it. So in my sophomore year when I was invited to participate in a summer program which entailed me leaving home for six weeks, me nor my mother were excited about the opportunity. I did not know that the program, called the Emory Pipeline Collaborative Program, would completely change my outlook on life and my identity…

When I started Unity High School I thought that we were going to get a lot of work from my classes, and that work was going to be extremely hard. I also thought that I wasn't going to have any free time to do anything because of that, but it turned out to be wrong because the teachers give us a good amount of work but its not really hard. I thought that making friends in Unity would be hard in a sort of way but it was quit easy because everyone else was trying to make friends too. When I first got to Unity I also thought that there was going to be a few school clubs, but there is a good amount of clubs that students can join if they want to join some type of club. I think as a person I have grown more since first coming to Unity because I…

As I entered homeroom, I noticed I was the only latina present and that there was only one other person of color. At first this did not bug me, but as the week went by, I realized that we were the only two non-white students in the whole middle school. This made me feel very out of place, because I had never been the only Latina at a school, so I did anything I could to fit in. I was willing to let people make me their own personal dictionary, for inappropriate language, or to translate their readings. As a person of color, I was always taught to put others before me or else I would be seen as rude and uneducated, so I complied. Throughout my life, I have witnessed that many upper class citizens take their privilege for granted; they do not…

“Wow! I did not know there were black Americans”. During the month I was in China, I heard this or a variant of it jokily said to me numerous times. I never took offense to it since I understood most of the media from America that came to China featured individuals who did not look like me. Furthermore, for those Americans who had come to China, they were mostly white and had come for business. While in China, I was able to share my experience as an African-American; I always found enjoyment sharing my experiences and it seemed to me those around me found enjoyment learning about a different side of America. With me sharing my experiences, they were being able to understand the diverse nature of the United States.…

I was born to dreamers, fed with the diversity found on the streets of Chinatown and Little India, and guided by the calloused sun stained hands of my immigrant father. With achiote and morro running through my veins I was raised to overcome the extensive barriers that were set way before my time.To prove to society that I am more than what the media spoon feeds the rest of world to ought to believe of what latinas are supposed to be. To be the face and voice of the new generation of latinos and latinas in this melting pot of cultures.…

I have learnt to be tolerant and to understand other people’s cultures, to respect beliefs and values of other people. This excited me, and I felt I wanted to find out how much I had learnt from this module and what to apply to my placement. I wanted to find out if the patients had individual rights at these homes. I was keen on observing how the staff cared for the aged, and to see if the standard set by the Care Homes Regulatory Office were being met. I was surprised to find that the department of health has stipulated the National Minimum Standard for the Care homes for Older People. I also felt apprehensive about being excluded by the carers, on the groups of respecting the patient’s private needs, if any. Nevertheless I was also concerned about the new environment of working in hand with the carers who understood what was expected from them. This was a challenge for me I then confirmed my…

As a paraprofessional myself, I find that I sometimes question what my true role is in a classroom. As much as I would like to modify some of the teachers’ teaching practices, I have to remember that I don’t have that authority. I have been a teacher assistant for 15 years; I have worked with general education students, special education students and from Pre Kinder to 12th grade. In every single general education classroom I’ve been in, the teacher would take over all forms of instruction and I simply helped with discipline. When I entered the special education classroom (current placement), I was given so much more responsibility. Not only am I expected to assist with discipline, completing assignments, but I am also expected to help…
