Personal Narrative: My Outsider
My insider/outsider partner was Alicia Garcia. As you can tell by her last name she is Hispanic. I don’t have many Hispanic friends and I am not use to their culture. Starting on the project Alicia told me a little a bit about her heritage. One of the things I asked her was, “Do you celebrate the day of the dead?” I know that might seem like a crazy question to ask, but I the only thing that I truly knew about her culture is what I seen on TV. Alicia said that they do celebrate it to some extent. They don’t actually go to a grave site and light candles for their fallen relatives, but instead have a feast in honor of them. Alicia is the first generation American Hispanic. For my outsider trip, we first went to taco bell. I have heard of taco …show more content…
First, I noticed how far this place was from where I live. The restaurant was in Snellville. As we arrived the building was made of this type of stone brick. The roof was made of the red tile shingles you would usually find on the roofs of houses in California. To me when I first entered it smelled like freshly mopped floor. A group of hosts greeted us at the door with a big smile and a “Hola Senoritas!”
The El Patron music was playing and it was a happy vibe flowing through the restaurant. Once I sat down I quickly order a peach margarita on the rocks. I might not be familiar to the culture and their food, but I am familiar with the margaritas. They brought us a basket of chips and queso cheese. I thought queso only came in the yellow cheese. Alicia informed me that this is the authentic queso cheese. I didn’t really know what to get from El Jinete, so Alicia convinced me to get a chicken quesadilla. Alicia and I started talking while our food was being made. We didn’t have to wait long, and the food serving sizes were huge. The aroma coming from my plate was amazing. I am not a big fan of grilled chicken, but in a quesadilla it seemed like there is no other way to eat it. After this experience I am more open to trying new things. I told Alicia that I would want to go to another Mexican restaurant, just some place closer to where I

Last weekend, I went to Suwanee, GA to see my father and stepmother because it had recently been my stepmother's birthday. In celebration we chose to dine out at a restaurant called Gulf Coast Grill. It was the first time my family had eaten at the restaurant, but will not be the last. Once stepping inside, I knew it was going to be interesting because the restaurant had a very strong beach theme as well as a live band playing. After being told it was going to be a fifteen to twenty minute wait, I was surprised when our table was called after less than ten. The restaurant experience was already off to a good start, and only continued to get better.…

Imagine having just finished a long, stressful day of school on a rainy Tuesday when suddenly you hear your stomach growling vigorously as it cries out for food. As you contemplate whether to eat at home or at a restaurant, you slip your hands into your pockets and, to your surprise, find a five-dollar bill. Making an opportunity out of the discovery of the money just scavenged, you decide to walk over to Chacho’s to partake in the infamous “Taco Tuesday.” Once seated, you are instantly swayed by the aroma of beef to order carne asada tacos. Soon after, you are approached by a lanky waiter who takes your order then returns with your food not too long after. At the arrival of your food, you are appalled by what you see: a plate of tacos garnished completely with the…

The first thing that I went around and did was visited each station to see some of the posters and learn a little bit about some things in other countries. One of the stations talked about corn and where it actually originated from. The poster talked about the Spaniards were one of the first to actually use and grow corn as part of their agriculture. It used to be known as some of the best corn that was available in the world. Then once North America was found that was one of the products that was also found here to be grown and now is a main produce in America. Another station that I visited talked about an exotic food that is consumed in South America. The guinea pig is actually served as a meal there and is eaten by the people on a semi-regular basis. It is one of the main foods that is served during cinco de mayo. The group had beef jerky set out instead of guinea pig because obviously in the United States that is not a dish that is served as food.…

When one thinks of Mexican food one probably has cheese sauce and chips come to mind. Mexican food has become a huge part of American life, for example salsa outsells Ketchup in America. (Navarrette, 2011) Almost every town has a Mexican restaurant, and even my little town has a very popular Mexican restaurant. During this project I decided to take home a menu from El Mariachi’s, my local Mexican restaurant. Of course there was one main theme…taco or burrito shells. Almost every dish was served in a taco or a burrito shell or they were served on the side. (Lunch menu, 2010). The reason behind the popularity of taco and burrito shells is simple, corn. According to Peyton, corn has been one of the biggest crops grown in Mexico for four-thousand…

All of the immigrants agreed to this statement because the food here is not authentic. Joanne Zhang, from China, explained how sweet and sour chicken is nothing you would find in a Chinese restaurant in China. Everything is Americanized here so that people will like it better. Esiquio Cortes also said that places like Taco Bell are not Mexican at all. The type of tacos they have at Taco Bell could never be found in Mexico. Additionally, Daniela and Priscilla also agreed with this statement. Describing how some of their favorite fruits are more expensive, less sweet, and even smaller in America compared to Brazil's. I can relate to this personally because I have been to Barcelona and I know how cheap and delicious the fruits are there.…

Like most people, when it comes time to decide on where there’re going to eat, I’m plagued by indecision. One thing that everyone in my family can agree on when all else fails is Mexican food, so when asked where I wanted to go eat today, I picked Gringos. I keep hearing positive talk about it, and thought I would see what all the fuss was about. It’s important to note that I moved from the Dallas area where my family and I would eat Mexican food at several times a week and since moving I have yet to find really good Mexican food, which is kind of a shock to the system when you become dependent on it almost like a drug. I mean the first solid food I ever ate as a baby was refried beans and rice. So, it has been my mission to eat at as many Mexican food restaurant as I can find that one place…
