Personal Narrative: My Love Of Independence
“Wow! I bet you get a lot of Christmas presents.” “Who do you fight with?” “I bet you get lonely.” These are some of the reactions I receive when I inform people that I am an only child. While alone time is inevitable when being an only child, it is not the side effect that many view it to be. This unique situation has given me the ability to develop relationships and discover love of independence.

Throughout my life, I have cultivated close relationships with my family and peers. With no siblings to bond with, talk about problems with, or share adventures with, I realized as a child that I would have to look elsewhere for those essentialities. The foundation of developing relationships began with my family, specifically my parents. Throughout my life, I have been exposed to an adult’s perspective which has benefited me remarkably. While most people my age do not tag along to political rallies with their mom and dad or discuss world news at dinner, this is an everyday occurrence in my home. This resulted in a strong bond between my

While I love being with others, my alone time is just as gratifying. My alone time as a child consisted of various thoughts and daydreams ranging from games to play, adventures to embark on, and stories to tell, and as I grew older those thoughts and daydreams changed into creative ideas such as stories to write or ideas for a school project. Without siblings to lead the way or carve out a path for me to follow, I was forced to learn to think for myself and solve my problems as well as develop my interests in certain hobbies such as reading or paddleboarding. The time spent by myself made me realize the importance of independence. While many my age would not dare to do anything alone, I do not mind. Trips to the movies, lunch alone or outdoor adventures are fulfilled

To be alone, is being able to learn not only yourself, but to learn to love and appreciate the whole world around you. Like the way when you walk through the forest and the newly fallen leaves smell of fresh rain and the upcoming winter. When you look in the mirror and see that you’re beautiful even with your imperfections of acne and scars. Being alone is okay, it lets you appreciate what’s around and helps you learn to love your imperfetions acnce and scars and the world before you find your love. I saw a video once and great words came from it, “lonerness is okay, it’s okay if nobody believes like you, all experience is unique.”…

Throughout my life I have encountered many circumstances that have shaped me into the person I am today. I was born in Moroleon, Guanajuato, Mexico. I attended school in Mexico all the way to second grade. In the summer of 2006 I moved to Cumming, Georgia. It was the hardest thing to do because I left everything that I care the most about. We lived in a trailer which was not the nicest place and in the middle of the forest. I started school at the beginning of August. I had always loved school so I was so excited for the first day. I knew it was going to be hard because I would have to conquer so many obstacles on the way. At this time the only English I knew was probably counting from one to ten and some of the colors. My Father knew some…

My political viewpoint has changed dramatically since I was first introduced to politics. I come from a democratic family, where it is strongly believed that it is the government’s responsibility to care for all people and that the government knows what is best for all people. Every voting season, my parents vote for a democratic president and explain to me the reasoning behind their decision. It was not until I was in the tenth grade that I realized that I did not hold the same political beliefs as my parents. After taking several political quizzes and extensively researching the bevy of political parties, I now know that I am an independent. What is an independent? An independent is an individual politician not affiliated to any political…

There has been many cases in which I have helped an outsider feel welcome. One time in particular is when I played tag with this little boy at church since he was new and no one else played with him. Originally, I was outside eating candy and talking to my friends at church. I noticed that this little boy was standing all alone watching all the other little kids play without him. I thought that maybe he was upset so I went over to him and asked if he wanted the rest of my gummy worms. He seemed nervous at first, but eventually he started talking to me. I learned that he was five years old and he was visiting his grandparents for the weekend. His older brother was outside playing basketball with some of the other older boys at the church, and…

Ever since I was born, I was a military brat. Not knowing where to call home, or if any place could be home, I moved. I moved six times, four of those places were towns that nobody could think about. Germany, North Carolina, Alaska, North Carolina, Germany, and Alaska, yet no place to call home. May 22, 1999, my first day on this world; Kronach hospital had its first American baby in their hands, yet they acted like I was a different species.
