Personal Narrative: My Legacy Leader
Legacy Leader

One of my most impactful leaders I’ve ever had was SGT. Christopher Smith. SGT. Smith went way above and beyond as my team leader, during one of the hardest times I’ve ever encountered as a soldier. Even more impressive to me was SGT. Smith at that point in his career did not have had the classic higher leader training the Army provides but he instinctually knew the right things to do. This was a leader who took care of myself when I literally had nowhere else to turn and through this paper I will examine the attributes and competencies that made SGT. Smith my Legacy Leader and why I hope to live up to his example. The reason after all these years that I still hold

Smith took care of me, even when the Army Emergency Relief wouldn’t. My mother was in a near fatal car accident and was in ICU in a coma. The army was able to get my wife, kids and I back to Canada to see her but because it was the holiday season, we had spent all of our disposable money on gifts. After AER turned me down and told me they couldn’t help me in Hawaii I’d have to get a loan when I got to where I was going, in Canada. My wife and I returned most of our gifts and took things off of layaway to have some money to cover expenses. When SGT. Smith was made aware of my situation, on our way to the airport, he gave me out of his own pocket $3,000 to cover food hotel and a rental car on only a handshake and my word. This selfless act allowed my wife, kids and I to be there to ensure my mother was taken care of while not starving ourselves. This example of SGT. Smith’s character has had maybe the biggest impact on me as a soldier and leader then arguably any other leader ever has. In fact, I have emulated, to a lesser degree, SGT Smith’s behavior a couple of times with my own soldiers, only ever really asking

However, as I walked out of the counseling room and was finally able to absorb and sort through all the strengths and growth opportunities that was about my role as the group leader, it dawn to me how ineffective of a group leader I was. This gut punching feelings made me question whether or not this career path was suited for me. By not processing certain thoughts with members or challenging them was a disservice for them. My leadership style is best described as a funnel. My aim in leading others is not to conduct every single individual, but to guide everyone to work towards the same central goal. I believe it is best to let others bring their own unique abilities to the table and use them to accomplish the task at hand. One of my most memorable experiences as a leader was leading my school’s student section. When I came into high school, school spirit was a joke. At games, everyone sat and no one said a thing. I decided that needed to change. My fellow students didn’t want change. They told my friends and I to sit down and shut up. I kept standing, I yelled louder, and kept going. Eventually, I started a spark. By the end of my freshman year there were a group…

General Patton also used empathy to create a sense of unity and that he actually cares about what happens to them. ‘If he says he’s not, he’s a liar’ this shows how everyone’s been through what each soldier will go through. This shows that no one is special and that everyone gets scared and worried. This creates the feeling of everyone being in it together and will support each other. ‘They are not supermen.’ General Patton is trying to break down the fear. If…

The name of the television show I decided to watch for 30 minutes was “Power”. Power is a drama series about an African American man that lives in a stunning Manhattan penthouse, and the power and success that come with owning a fortune 500 business. He lives a double life of also operation a drug empire that serves only the rich and influential. The five things that stood out to me as being a product of progress since the Civil Rights Movement were as followed. The first thing I noticed was the nice penthouse in Manhattan. In the 60s only about 14% of the population was blacks and about 86% were whites and homeownership for blacks didn’t really exist. The second thing was a white man having sexual intercourse with a black woman. In the 60s…

My leadership philosophy would have to be Building School Community inside school and outside the school as discussed by Sergiovanni (1994). My school has been working at becoming a Professional Learning Community (PLC), but we found this summer in a training institute with the DuFours on PLC’s, we participated in, that we were not doing it correctly. My school has begun the PLC process this school year with a new focus on the true meaning of PLC, to form a community of teachers who focus on student learning, creating a collaborative culture, and are results-oriented in our thinking (Jessie, 2007). I believe this goes along with what Sergiovanni (1994) was describing about the stewardship relationships with teachers and students being unconditional…

All the while, my dog was a week into her hospital stay as doctors tried their best to keep her alive until my arrival, knowing my situation with the military. Although she was sick, I was excited to know I still had a chance to see her before she left the world. But when the last day arrived for me to finish my contract on active duty, approximately an hour away from receiving my final paperwork to officially depart, I received a call from my sister, hearing her cry uncontrollably through the phone. She didn't need to say anything for me to grasp what was going on. Tears instantly came to my eyes and my heart was shattered. I lost my main dog of 10 years, and I was too late to change my decisions on my reenlistment orders. I felt like I lost everything again, and was about to return home to nothing. Crying majority of the time during my 12 hour non-stop drive from Jacksonville, NC. to New Orleans, LA., I had nothing but time to think. I replayed all the memories of the years I spent with my dog, wishing I hadn't left her to join the military. But I also found myself thinking, why not go back to school and chase that dream of becoming a veterinarian as I always wanted? Become someone more than just 'the veterinarian' or 'the doctor' that took care of people's 'pets' just to make a living to pay off bills. I found myself…

Growing up I was the loud intrusive child in the kindergarten class who got in trouble for talking and breaking the rules. This is not the same child who left the elementary school. Entering middle school I was quite the opposite, indeed. The shy, quiet, awkward kid in the corner was the title that I owned. Experiences that occurred in the 6 years of primary school had effected me deeply and it would take years to undo the damage that these years had done. I had become a follower. I never stood up for myself or made my own decisions. I needed something to get me out the funk that I gotten myself into. My saving grace came in the form of a friend, let's call her 'Joan'. Joan was a leader. Loud, lively, and independent. I strived to obtain the…

As a high school freshman, I decided to join the Seaman High School band program. This was fun and allowed me the opprotunity to meet new people. I was not very confident and did not like to play by myself. Getting in front of a small group or the whole class scared me. Turning red and shaking were normal for me everytime I got in front of people who were not close to me. Now that I am a Senior, I have grown quite a bit. In the past four years, I have become more confident. Being a section leader, I had to be able to play by myself to help the younger students with their specific issues. Since section leaders play by themselves during class, I had to learn to overcome my fear, in order to help my section grow. In a job setting, being able to…

My leadership potential is somewhat paradoxical. Although I am very driven and passionate about my work, I make sure that I never boast about my accomplishments. From basketball, I heard the phrase, "Hungry and Humble." I would say that this is very accurate to my leadership capabilities. As a leader, I am very "hungry" to accomplish our task at hand. My drive and passion fuels me to finish the job. If I were to receive any recognition for my work, my first reaction is always denial. I respectfully deny any praise given to me. Eventually, I accept the praise, but I always make sure to acknowledge my team or anyone who has helped me in the process. Humbleness and humility are very important virtues that I hold very high in the list of what makes a powerful leader. Another quality of myself as a leader is my…
