Personal Narrative: My Learning Disability
The fact of it all is that there have been many nights that I have cried myself to sleep wondering if I could one day, be able to get a grip on my learning disability. “Will I ever learn to deal with my learning disability? Why must I have to work hard at school work and yet feel like I have not gotten anywhere. Why me?” I have cried out. The hardest part of going back to school is dealing with this disability. I have the hardest time comprehending reading assignments and spelling is a huge chore on any written assignment, which makes me want to just throw my hands up and give up at times. My learning disability makes reading very difficult for me; well, more like a nightmare. To give you an idea of what it is like, when …show more content…
I spell so badly that there are times when even the “spell check” can’t comprehend what word I am trying to spell. I end up trying to use a different word which I can spell. I always try to laugh this off a little bit, but honestly it is horrifying to me. I try to take notes in class, but words get misspelled and later, when I get home, I have yet another puzzle that I am piecing together. This one is sometimes easier to put together since I am the one that wrote them and I can recall what was being said in class to help me figure it out. For instance, I will take notes from what the teacher is saying, but I misspell most of the words that I hear. When I get home and try to go over them it is a little difficult to determine what word I was trying to spell, but I close my eyes and remember what the instructor was telling us and I can figure out most, if not all the words that I have misspelled. However, it still makes for a hard situation for me sometimes because at times I can’t recall the word I was trying to spell. I have had some tell me that I need a dictionary. I would love to use a dictionary but that is another puzzle to me. I really have a hard time looking up a word when I am really not sure what letters are in it plus it is another jig-saw puzzle to place together. I feel like I am a complete idiot at times. I mean, what person spells so badly that she can’t understand

Sitting at the living room table I began to do my homework, which instantly started the wrestling match between letters and my mind, consequently setting off my short fuse when it came to reading. I sat there balling while my parents were nearby in the kitchen. This was not a new occurrence, it had begun to be a regular happening by the time I was in second grade. I couldn’t come up with words for things, or I would blend parts of two different words together making a completely different word. I could not read independently and it caused me to be frustrated anytime the subject came up. My parents had been concerned since kindergarten, although as the years went by my struggle to read started to trouble them more and more, so by second grade they had decided to get me tested.…

Growing up, most of the children I knew would go to church on Sunday’s, visit their grandparents’ house to bake cookies after school, and have milk and cereal for breakfast every morning. But I had never set foot inside of a religious building, couldn’t even speak the same language as my grandmothers, and ate congee with fermented soy beans like it was the most natural thing in the world. My little town where I’d grown up, made friends, and built memories was, to say the least, completely un-diverse.…

Everyone in life will have their own personal obstacles they will have to face in life. Some people will mentally shut down and give up when faced with a challenge. Others will take their challenges and use them to better themselves. The obstacles that I have faced in my life have never hit me harder than they have these past few months. This being my senior year, I always expected it to be the most laid back and relaxing year of my high school career. Although, under all this immense pressure, this is where my true colors came out. I didn’t stop working to my full potential,…

Have you ever felt God call you to do something, and yet brush it aside as though it was meant for someone else? I became enchanted with American Sign Language in high school, when I befriended a Deaf group of students. I now realize I was fascinated by the language because, unbeknownst to me at that time, I am a visual and kinesthetic learner. Any time I saw Deaf people or Sign Language Interpreters in the community, I couldn't help myself but to watch them. By the time I was a mother of two I knew I wanted to be fluent in the language, although finding the time seemed out of the question.
