Personal Narrative: Reoccurring Challenges In My Life
Have you ever had a reoccurring challenge in your life? The one that sticks out the most is my challenge to still get on and ride with my knee. Every time I ride it could be my last. I still get back on every time though.
Every time I get on I have to face the challenge that I might hurt my knee especially since I'm training colts. With the way my saddle sits on a horse, it forces my knee to bend outward and puts more stress on it. When I kick I have to twist my knee and bring it in and out which causes a lot of stress. Not only that, but a colt could decide to run my knee into the fence at any time. With what I had done to my knee, they said I would be lucky to walk half way normal. But I said I would walk normal, I would ride and compete

“WHOA WHOA WHOA THIS IS BALONEY MAN!” that is something I say whenever I am frustrated. People have always told me sometimes the best way to learn something is through failure. People value things they have accomplished differently. Often the people whom are naturally adept at things do not realize how much of a struggle it can be for others. Many times when people have told me that if you are going to fall, fall forward. Do not let your insecurities, doubts, and pride get in the way of improving yourself. In brief, there can always be a way to improve yourself.…

Learning from mistakes is a key part of life. I myself have had to learn from my mistakes. Over the summer I cut my foot outside. I spent the whole night in the worst hospital, then I got 18 stitches in the bottom of my foot. It also set back my ability to play football. Everyone in life will have their own personal obstacles they will have to face in life. Some people will mentally shut down and give up when faced with a challenge. Others will take their challenges and use them to better themselves. The obstacles that I have faced in my life have never hit me harder than they have these past few months. This being my senior year, I always expected it to be the most laid back and relaxing year of my high school career. When in fact I set myself up for one of the biggest challenges of my life so far, by signing up for multiple online college classes, helping out with activities all over the school, and playing football for the first time since freshman year. Although, under all this immense pressure, this is where my true colors came out. I didn’t stop working to my full potential,…

I believe resiliency is something a person does not realize he/she possesses until faced with adversity. The environment in which I was raised, gave me the opportunities and experiences needed to develop and adapt to the adversities I have faced in life. As a child, each time I was faced with adversity I was able to maintain allostasis and return to homeostatis. I honestly feel that now, more than ever, is a time I am demonstrating resiliency, as I am adapting to a new state of homeostasis as a young adult with Multiple Sclerosis.…

There has been many life-shaping/life changing experiences in my life however if I have to pinpoint to one specific moment where I knew that my life as a child will be over was when I was 12 years old. My sister, grandmother and I just came back from spending 3 weeks in Nicaragua. I loved it so much I wanted to stay. A week or two after the family trip, my grandmother fell down concrete stairs and was pronounced dead once she went to the hospital. My life as a child or more likely my childhood was gone. At that moment I had to grow up, clean my house, take care of my sister, go to school and cook dinner.…

Within my life I have experienced difficulty, overcome adversity, and faced ethical questions, but the situation that I learned the most from was when I became injured during the cross country season and had to go to physical therapy. It was difficult because I couldn’t train with team, I couldn’t compete in meets, and within physical therapy the activities were challenging. I had to work with my physical therapist after school or before school and I was expected to all my exercises at home everyday. I learned quite a bit from that struggle, however. I learned how to organize my school work, social life, and other activities around the sessions, so that I wouldn’t fall behind. I also learned how to be committed to something and not give up.…

I remember letting my head fall to the floor and thinking, "How am I going to pull through this again?" I remember lying on the court, it felt as though I was there for hours, yet in reality it was only a few seconds. Again, I found myself in another doctor’s office, he was explaining to me the results of my MRI. He told me that I required surgery so on March 20, 2015, my experience with pain changed forever. Waking up after my surgery felt as though every single inch of my leg was broken, I ached from my hip to my toes. And it did not stop there; the recovery process began again, but a million times worse: constant excruciating pain, crutches, straight leg braces, long hours of physical therapy, hundreds of doctor visits, bottles of prescription pain pills. I worked endlessly to get my knee back to normal with the result that I could rejoin the team. At that moment, I was sitting on the sidelines watching my friends play and improve. Finally, the first day of practice had arrived, I had gotten a doctor’s note clearing me to play and was ecstatic. Although, my doctor warned me I sustained significant damage to my knee and…
