Personal Narrative: My First Make A Difference Act
Make 8 Difference Journal

9/8/2014
My first Make a Difference act took place in the computer lab at the GTCC campus today. I was in the computer lab finishing up a paper for my Psychology class. I had a gentleman sitting beside me and he looked like he was about to scream trying to complete a resume. I printed my paper and moved to him. I assisted him with the resume for over an hour. He was not yet enrolled in classes he was trying to get through a work study program and he was required to have a resume in order for him to get financial assistance. When we were done he gave me a hug and offered to take me for a coffee since he didn’t have much money to offer to me. I told him I did it to make a difference and help someone that needed it.

It made me feel so great the rest of the day because I helped someone with something that just might change his future for the better, and more so for the fact that he was so grateful!

My second act took place at my job. Walmart. I am a front end manager over all of the cashiers, customer service, and the money center. When a customer does not get their groceries for whatever reason maybe their card was declined or they were ill from waiting too long etc., I have to go to the register and abort the transaction for the next customer to come and the register not come up short. Anyways today, I was called over to the register and there was a mother with a 2 and a 4 year old that was single trying to buy a small amount of groceries but the bank declined the transaction for her check. The total bill was almost $80.00. It bothered me because my mom was single until I was 13 and I knew she was doing what my mom had to do many times, write a bad check. I told to cashier to clear it out and I totaled the transaction and paid it. The mother was almost in tears thanking me and I told her sometimes people just

Throughout my life I have encountered many circumstances that have shaped me into the person I am today. I was born in Moroleon, Guanajuato, Mexico. I attended school in Mexico all the way to second grade. In the summer of 2006 I moved to Cumming, Georgia. It was the hardest thing to do because I left everything that I care the most about. We lived in a trailer which was not the nicest place and in the middle of the forest. I started school at the beginning of August. I had always loved school so I was so excited for the first day. I knew it was going to be hard because I would have to conquer so many obstacles on the way. At this time the only English I knew was probably counting from one to ten and some of the colors. My Father knew some…

I’m happy with who I am today, just as everyone should be. But if I could change anything about myself, I’d want to have more motivation to do things. In the mornings before school I can barely get out of bed because I’m so tired and don’t want to go to school. I’m exceedingly intelligent but I don’t have any drive. I procrastinate on most of my work, and sometimes I just don’t want to do the work. Right now I’m rank 14 in my class but I could’ve been higher if I had any drive my freshman year. I don’t think about how my decisions now will impact me later and when I do, I don’t really care. I also don’t have much motivation to do things in sports activities. Last year I played volleyball and I never had that much playing time. Never being able…

Many people would say that growing up with parents who could not speak english would be to my disadvantage, but I disagree. Growing up I always believed it to be exhausting having to translate and never really feeling normal. I believed it to be dragging and many times protested against it, but besides it being tiring, I also felt embarrassed. Yeah embarrassed of having to deal with my parents and not being able to communicate with them like other kids did with their parents. As I grew older the issue only grew because at that point I began to resent them for putting me through what I believed to be embarrassing moments of confusion, but all of this changed when I finally realized that my parents did the best they could with what they had.…

I cut the grass for some of my family because they asked me to cut it for them. I did it for my Aunt Gwen and my Grandma Hill. I enjoy my time with my Aunt and I was working together with my brother and my cousin and we had a great time over at my Aunt’s house. And at my Grandma's house we had a great time over there. I got to see my baby cousin and I haven’t seen here in a long time. I would do this again anytime because it was fun and if they ask me to. I picked this to do because they asked me to do it for them. This experience made me realize that family matters and to never let them go. It changed me making me a better person and making myself more available to family’s need. This helped someone else and it help the community…

My political viewpoint has changed dramatically since I was first introduced to politics. I come from a democratic family, where it is strongly believed that it is the government’s responsibility to care for all people and that the government knows what is best for all people. Every voting season, my parents vote for a democratic president and explain to me the reasoning behind their decision. It was not until I was in the tenth grade that I realized that I did not hold the same political beliefs as my parents. After taking several political quizzes and extensively researching the bevy of political parties, I now know that I am an independent. What is an independent? An independent is an individual politician not affiliated to any political…

I wanted to achieve this goal while also enjoying my college experience by finding a balance between my social life and school work. As the single child in a family with working parents, I spent the most time of my childhood living and hanging around with my dog. This experience might be one of the reasons that I am very compassionate to animals and sensitive to people’s needs. My voluntary work is in a welfare house called Alenah's home. I love working there because I like seeing the smile face of the children there – even some autism babies don’t smile facially, I believe they can feel the love when being caressed softly.…

My mother, “Regina Hopkins,” has been a positive influence in my life. She has raised 6 kids all by herself as well as earned a Bachelor’s degree in nursing from a City College in Gainesville, Florida. My mother has been through pretty much everything a person can go through outside of war and was still able to be there and provide for all 6 of her kids. In high school, my mother wanted to play football and couldn't because she was a girl and back-in-the-day women were not allowed to play football with the guys. However, she remained strong by raising 6 kids and independently took care of all of us on her own. My mother has several qualities that I would love to develop. The first quality she has is balance; she certainly knows how to make…

This organization helps cancer patients find needed bone marrow donors. Finding donors are very difficult and finding matches are even more unlikely. This event made me realize how fortunate I was. I began volunteering more regularly with the same organization as well as places such as Food-share and a retirement home with residents who have memory loss. SAM and the retirement home mattered the most to me because I have close relatives who have schizophrenia and have died from cancer. Volunteering with these organizations made me realize how fortunate I was and inspired me to keep striving. This gave me a new perspective on life and I became more optimistic and outgoing. In addition to volunteering, I found a job, I began weightlifting, and I became much more social. In changing the way I think, I learned that life continues and that I still have time to improve myself.…

It was a crisp, Autumn Saturday evening at my grandparents farm, my entire extended family was packed around a bonfire roasting marshmallows and eating s 'mores. My mother was talking with her brother and sisters, my uncle and aunts, about the A+ Program, my mother mentioned that I had no idea on how I was going to get so many community service hours. My aunt said I could come help tutor her 5th grade class any days that I would like. That was a giant relief to hear because this situation had really been bothering me lately. I was also glad I wouldn 't have to waste 50 hours of my life picking up trash on the side of the highway. Instead, I will be helping kids with their education and growing relationships with them as well. I really enjoy working with children so this was a great opportunity.…
