Personal Narrative: My First Deployment
The purpose of this paper is to share my first deployment experience as the first sergeant. Serving in a war zone is an experience you will never forget. As a result of my first deployment to Afghanistan as a first sergeant, I practiced a new perspective on life, instilling trust in my Soldiers and NCOs to continue the mission. Perspective that I developed from the beginning with the pre-deployment preparation at the National Training Center (NTC) through the actual deployment to Afghanistan and finally over the redeployment home. In January 2009, I was assigned as the first Sergeant for Alpha Company, 2-34 Armored Battalion, 1st Armored Combat Brigade (ACB), 1st Infantry Division, Fort Riley, Kansas. With my assignment as the first sergeant, …show more content…
After all, said and done, as a battalion we conducted 33 Air Assault missions, more than any other unit ever conducted in Afghanistan. My company conducted 15 of the 33 air assault missions. In December 2011, due to the drawdown of American troops in Afghanistan., my company received word to hand over our COP and Strong point to the Afghan Army. I had to start taking moving essential equipment from both locations while conducting combat missions simultaneously. The handoff had to be completed in thirty days and the pressure was on. My Soldiers worked nonstop for the next few weeks to complete the mission. Any and everything we could move to include T-walls was transported to the big main Forward Operating Base (FOB). On 20 December 2011, the transformation was complete and the Afghan Army had full control of the area of operation my company once own. It was stressful to maintain accountability of my Soldiers as we had moved to the main FOB. Moving from a constrained environment to a large FOB left room for Soldiers to focus on other things beside combat missions. Our missions did not stop, they actually increased because we no longer had to secure our COP area or man two separate locations. Although my stress level went down it was still there because of the intensity of the missions. Finally, we saw light at the end of the tunnel, as our replacement unit started to roll

    What they saw downrange

The soldier, Airman, Marine or Sailor who spend a year tour downrange has seen it all. Just about everything you could imagine, when you have been deployed downrange in Iraq and Afghanistan you have seen it. They have seen unbelievable heroism, and they have seen blatant cowardice; They have seen, felt, and tasted fear; and have experienced sweet relief. They have seen men bleed to death surrounded by their fellow cadre. They have seen brains and blood all over the inside of a Humvee, after they watched the vehicle in front of them momentarily vanish in the smoke of an IED blast. They have heard the screams – “Medic! Medic!”. They have lifted dead Afgan children out of cars, and they have looked down at their own hands and seen them covered in blood mixed with dirt as they moved the injured to safety. Sadly they have seen kids with gunshot wounds, and they have watched helplessly as an old Iraqi man pulls the cord on a suicide bomb killing himself and 10 others in a busy Baghdad market. Downrange, they have seen two medics over him desperately trying to get either a pulse or a breath. Downrange, they have heard rounds wiz by as they run for cover as fast as can, they can still smell the cordite, and hear the percussion thump of mortar rounds.…

Jim Frederick’s book “Black Hearts” explores the harrowing account of soldiers from 1st Platoon, Bravo Company, 502nd Infantry Regiment during their deployment in 2005-2006 through Iraq’s “Triangle of Death”. The story is one of failed leadership at all levels, resulting in broken bonds between brothers, drug abuse, and ultimately the rape and murder of an Iraqi family. The soldiers’ descent into complete isolation was brought on by not only dire combat situations, but also a complete disregard for their mental health by higher. This essay will compare and contrast the roles of SSG Eric Lauzier and SFC Jeff Fenlason, and how their leadership had a positive or negative effect on their subordinates.…

n 3 November 2010, the commander of United States Air Forces Central Command (COMUSAFCENT) signed and released an order establishing the 9th Air and Space Expeditionary Task Force– Afghanistan (9 AETF-A). This order represents an important moment because it alters the 20-year-old model of how COMUSAFCENT, in his role as the 9 AETF commander, presents forces to the supported joint force commander (JFC)—in this case, the commander of US Forces–Afghanistan (COMUSFOR-A).1 This article serves as a complementary piece to Lt Gen Mike Hostage’s article “A Seat at the Table,” which appeared in the Winter 2010 issue of this journal.2 It documents how this change in USAFCENT’s airpower command and control (C2) structure developed, tempered by my observations and perspective as the commander charged with implementing the COMUSAFCENT’s vision. First, I explain the…

The bloody plane was shot down…I was sleeping dreaming about a concoction of fish and chips and my home before the war. I lived on a farm, and I had my own horse…I miss him. My dad taught me how to ride when I was four; riding would provide me relief from school and farming. Anyways, I then I awoke to a storm of fire. The plane was literally sliced in two. I think the beastly enemy shot us down. Even though they shot us clean out of the sky, I wish to thank them and show some British manners to them because this island is beautiful. It has fruit, and the sights are more beautiful than anything back home. There are even pigs on the island that we could eat. Sadly, I thought myself alone until a booming noise thundered through the jungle. I was scared; I thought it was an earthquake, although I have never experienced one before.…

Well I had a rather sheltered life as a child, my parents were well off. Actually my family has the royal line in it. Through my father I am, in fact, a descent of Prophet Mohammad, and my Grandfather was the Head of the Sunni faith in large parts of Iraq and the Moslem world. The leadership is handed down through family but neither my father nor his older brother would take on the role when he died. Instead it was passed on to a cousin. Through my father I am also descended from the most traditional of Iraqi aristocracy, one of the nine families that originally ruled Baghdad. My family the Al Muderis family’s political and social power has tied very much to the establishment, so its influence weakened with the revolution of the Monarchy, the rise of the republic and…

Being here at Taylor still feels surreal to me. Waking up in my dorm every morning and comprehending that I am going to be here for the majority of the next four years is crazy and exciting. I have loved every part of my experience here at Taylor so far. Already in my time here at Taylor I have experienced many new firsts. I have experienced my first wing retreat, my first pick-a-date, my first Taylor sporting event, my first bro-sis event, my first Ivanhoes run, and many other exciting Taylor firsts. I have learned more names in three weeks than I thought was physically possible, and I have made more friends than I think I have had in my whole life. Getting to know all of the girls on my wing so well has probably been my favorite part of my Taylor experience so far. All of the Taylor firsts I have experienced wouldn’t be the same if I wasn’t getting to experience them with such a great group of girls.…

On August 19, 2003 at Fort Riley, Kansas, is where I received notice of my first deployment. I woke up at five-thirty in the morning to get ready for physical training. When I went outside, the temperature was about thirty-five degrees with a brisk wind. Standing in a formation in my black thin sweat pants and my gray sweat top, it felt like I was only wearing a t-shirt and shorts. We ran about three miles up and down long steep hills that I thought would never end. Finally with physical training out the way, my real work day had to start. I took off around eight in the morning after a nice filling breakfast of pancakes, eggs, bacon and orange juice. It was not as good as what I was used to growing up, but it was better than nothing at all.…
