Personal Narrative: My Fight
Eat, Train, Sleep. That is the mantra you have when you are preparing for a fight. Except this time it is the fight of my life. I fought my way to the top to be the next world heavyweight champion. Since I challenged the current heavyweight champ I have been training everyday for ten hours and now I am a force to be reckoned with. Today at seven A.M. two days before my fight I start to train again like every other day.

“Dom, you better be training hard today, because I saw you slack off a little. The fight is going to be broadcasted live on pay per view, HBO” my Coach says

“Marcus dont worry, Im not going to lose. I dropped out of college to get here. We will win this!” I replied

“Good, today we have three amature fights scheduled and the first one is in five minutes so get ready!” said Coach

So I get ready and hop in the ring just as my opponent does. As we touch gloves, he tries hitting me with a quick cross but I dodge and he misses. The Ref does not call it so I know Marcus told this him to allow playing dirty, just to test me. The bell rings, we come out of our corners and begin to circle each other. Staring one another down as we do our walk arounds, searching for weaknesses. As I watch him, immediately I see a straight rookie mistake, his right shoulder is sticking out to far giving me a huge advantage. This is going to help me because once I see his shoulder twitch even a centimeter I will know he is

He continues, “If you drop anytime in the last round, and the current Heavyweight Champion wins we will give you $500,000.”
I thought about their offer and considered accepting it. However if I did except it I would never be able to be a World Champion.
I answered “ Gentlemen I like the offer however I do not believe in giving up so I politely decline.”
I then get up and leave them and start to walk over to hit the bag because I need to practice because there is no way I am going to

Few sports encompass the battle of human bodies and wills quite like the sport of wrestling does. Two opponents of equal size, with little equipment, and no goal other than to physically dominate your opponent. Ask any wrestler, however, and they will tell you that this “physical” battle is 90% mental- more about breaking and outlasting your opponent rather than feats of physical strength. Press that same wrestler a little further, and they will admit that the toughest battle is not actually with the person standing on the line across from you, but rather within your own mind and body. The fact that wrestlers drop a lot of weight before competition, (sometimes using harmful methods) is well-known, but few people understand the full process…

You ready blue corner? You ready red corner? Let’s fight! Ms. Ronda Rousey has heard this multiple times in her career in the UFC. What some people don’t understand is how an individual can go into a cage and risk the chance of serious injury. It could be from a knockout or a submission. It takes a strong and some think insane person to go into a environment like that in front of thousands of people to earn a belt.…

Also cutting weight might be a result of avoiding a stronger weight class in order to be successful. The logic in wrestling is to make the lowest weight you can in the weigh-ins, which are 24 hours before the match. Then you can replenish and re-hydrate your body over the course of the 24 hours between the weigh-in and the match. This will give you an advantage in the…

The feeling when you connect any type of punch from a jab to an uppercut is overwhelming. When you hit that shot that sends your opponents mind spinning, causing them to form a strong turtle clenching their head into their own arms. On the ropes now, ears up like a Merkat, waiting for heavenly sound of the bell, which seems to be light years away. Whereas you on the other hand, find this new form of energy after connecting the power shot. You feel regenerated, as if you drilled a hole in their energy savings and robbing them each punch you throw. You see the tremble of their knees, see the wobble in their stance. Pushing them further into the ropes, now cleanly sweeping and picking shots when you barley had the energy to start the round. The sound of the bell seems to be on fast forward every time you connect you favourite shot. Your opponent falls to the ground helplessly, you look towards your coach, he’s never been so proud of you. All the work pays off, you thank him for what he put you…

Not only is this a part of my life but it has taken control of my life. As a child at the age of eight, I had not experienced many things nor had I the knowledge to know of all the great opportunities life has to offer. Things come at you when they’re not expected; that’s life. Actions that you may do in the present could affect you in the future. Noises, shouts and grunts could be overheard from a distance and my curiosity grew as they increased intriguing me to peek into the door of the burgundy coated building. Little did I expect that what I was about to encounter on the opposite side of this door would hold a great amount of meaning to me in the near future. I opened the door, my eyes were immediately drawn to the center of the gymnasium as people from the audience that came to speculate screamed and shouted. There was people seated on both sides of the gymnasium, from left to right people were exclaiming their emotions as they intensely watched the center of the gym. In the center there was a mat in which two young men were fighting aggressively, trying to bring one another down, grunting and panting. This is wrestling and it is not a game, it is war. This is my realm and my escape from the harsh reality on the outside of this gym and this is where I am destined to be for the rest of my life.…

Three 3.5 hour practices a week with five days of conditioning and two of weightlifting. Training for the Super32, to this day, was the hardest thing I’ve ever attempted. The Super32 is national tournament held on the east coast every autumn for some of the best wrestlers in the nation with some brackets having more than 150 competitors. For two days at the end of October, Greensboro,NC is flooded with wrestlers, coaches, officials, parents and families, recruits and the occasional visiting Olympic team member. At this stage, technique and endurance are the pillars of victory. Wrestling without aggression would not get me anywhere here, I had to push the pace and enforce my…

The mind boggling anticipation before a wrestling match is such a heart thrilling emotion. As you’re waiting for your name to be called, every wrestler is there with their coach warming up. I prefer jumping rope; this is a fun and fast way of getting muscles loosened and the sweat pouring. However, at the same time my mind is racing and my thoughts are wildly adventuring from one scenario to another. As I hear the announcer call my name, I now know that the time has come to put all of my hard work and talent to the test.…
