Personal Narrative: My Experience In The Social Work Field
Other early recollection I’ve had for of my passion for mental health and Social work has to be when I was about ten years old. At the time my best friend’s mom would babysit us at her job from time to time. During the summer time, my parents were working during the day, and most days they would leave me at my best friend’s house and her grandmother would take care of us. However, there were a few instances when her grandmother could not take care of us and my friend’s mom would have no choice other than to take us to her job. My best friends mom worked as a specialist of some sort in a mental health clinic. I remember seeing all the doctors helping the patients, but what stuck out to me the most was seeing therapy sessions. I remember my friend and I would try to sneak into them so we can listen in on their conversations and I’d be so amused to hear the types of things some people were going through and picturing myself one day helping people get through their struggles.
Another experience that shaped my decision of working in the Social Work field has been research labs, the first semester I enrolled at FIU I joined research labs and it completely changed the way I viewed academia. I’ve also done a lot of traveling this past year that has …show more content…
This delay in learning really affected me in my college years, for instance, something that might take my peers one day to study, may take me two. This is especially true when it comes to math. However, I try everyday to better myself, since I know it takes me longer to be able to understand math problems I make sure I put in double the time to study and If I do not understand something I get tutoring for it. I have basically self-taught myself everything I did not learn during my childhood to be able to work academically at the same pace as the rest of my college
