Personal Narrative: My Experience At Tulane University
The moment I stepped on the Tulane campus that steamy May morning, I could feel the unique vibe of the university—super academic and intellectual, yet fun. When I toured the campus, our guide explained the balance between work and play. I am a serious student, but I would also be excited to be part of a lively campus community with fun traditions such as The Crawfest and Fridays at the Quad.
As an aspiring environmental biology major, I am intrigued by the course offerings, including Global Change Biology and Conservation Biology. These courses expand upon my biology and science coursework in high school. Research opportunities are also important to me. Many top tier universities reserve research for graduate students, but Tulane has opportunities

Over the course of my life, I have dedicated countless hours to helping others. My grandmother ran a Habitat for Humanity restore (secondhand shop) in South Carolina, so every time I visited her, we spent the entire time unloading donations, working the cash register, talking to prospective homeowners, and delivering lunch to workers on the jobsites. I loved every minute of it. My grandmother retired last year, so I haven’t been back to the store recently, and I miss the opportunity to contribute. I am excited by Tulane’s strong relationship with Habitat, particularly in the rebuilding of New Orleans in the aftermath Hurricane Katrina. If I am fortunate enough to attend Tulane, I will most definitely volunteer with Habitat for Humanity and find additional opportunities for community work.
Current students tell me there is always something going on campus from the Biology Enthusiast's Association of Students to Tulane University Video Game Society. It seems the same can be said for the city. During my three day stay in New Orleans, I heard music on every corner, went to art galleries, and ate at amazing restaurants. If I am lucky enough to live in New Orleans for four years, I could be both culturally and academically enriched. In addition to studying at a top environmental and biological research institution, beignets would be the perfect way to start each

Samuel Clemens advised “Go to bed early, get up early-this is wise”, and by appreciating the soundness of his words, rarely, if ever, do I find myself in the chaos of late morning traffic. By accomplishing little everyday small tasks such as getting up early in time for a healthy breakfast or studying in motivating environments allows me to be extremely productive and effective as a student at the Santa Rosa Junior College (SRJC). For the past seven months, I’ve held an environmental specialist internship at the Santa Rosa Water Department that goes hand-in-hand with my dedication and efforts at the junior college. Over the past two years, it has been my pleasure to participate in courses and to become a part of the SRJC culture. I am motivated and eager to continue to develop a strong background of calculus, general chemistry, biology and critical thinking, and expanding physics, engineering and organic chemistry. My overarching education goal is to receive a bachelors of science in environmental engineering or hydrologic science. My top three universities of choice are UC Berkley and Cal Poly for their environmental engineering programs and UC Santa Barbara for hydrologic…

What I love the most about Tufts is the relaxed and accepting atmosphere among the student body, which is also reflected in the liberal arts education offered to students. Unlike other schools, my identity won’t just be defined by my major. At Tufts, I can be an artist as I take ceramics classes at SMFA, but also a scientist as I explore psychology. Tufts is a place where stereotypes are broken and differences are welcomed, and I know that when I go to Tufts, I am going to feel like I belong.…

Everyone knows the intersection on Hoover and Jefferson. It’s where students and faculty and neighbors of the community for a moment in time all come together. That intersection represents not only ones entrance and exit from the “USC bubble,” but provides a moment of realization that there is life beyond the classrooms, the books, and even the 2 mile “Fruber” radius around USC. See USC, provides the opportunity for one to reach their goals, to take their dreams and make them a reality. However, sometimes it takes a whole community and a 30 second traffic light to get you where you need to go.…

I began working at Keeter my first semester at College of the Ozarks. On my first day of work, the supervisor handed me a gleaming gold name tag that not only had my name but the state I came from. I watched as others put their nametags on, and I quickly discovered that most of them read Missouri, Oklahoma, and Arkansas. I looked down at my nametag and felt a sense of uniqueness, knowing no one in the room had the state of Virginia. I soon began to realize that my nametag sparked curiosity when the guests saw how far I had traveled. Guest after guest would ask the same question, “How did you end up here?” I answered this question dozens of times within a day. There were days that I would begrudgingly tell the Keeter guests my journey to this College, but never once did I fail to cherish the opportunity I was given.…

My time at the community college was used to focus on building a strong academic foundation, specifically tutoring international students English every week as they tried to maneuver through their lives in the United States. I remember during one particular session, a Chinese exchange student told me that when she first arrived in Seattle, she was in a state of euphoria. However, her inability to communicate fluently with her peers hindered her from adapting to the customs in America. Consequently, it impeded her from making her own place in society. Another individual, who emigrated from Eritrea, confessed she was still unfamiliar with having additional resources at her fingertips. She grew up in an area where advanced technological tools,…

The event that I choose to follow summer fest was a simple and casual visit to the wellness and recreational center, fancy way of saying the gym. Upon my first ever visit to Florida International University I still remember at our freshmen orientation entering the gym and thinking to myself this seems like a place that I will be visiting often during my four year tenure at school. And boy was I right, the facility was clean and professional looking very much like a professional gym would appear, the staff where all kind and ready to assist you if help was ever necessary, something that I truly valued. I was extremely exited to take a spinning class at the FIU gym, I had only ever heard positive reviews and I was looking forward to the experience as well. Personally I am obsessed with fitness so any class, or activity is something that I love to experience which is what drove me to experience the class myself, and did, I love it. When I got out of that class I was sweating so much, I felt like I had gone on a run around the world and it so amazing, the instructor knew exactly what she was doing and had no problem helping you out if you needed it, the music was fun and exiting extremely up tempo. Overall I can only rave about the experience, it was positive and motivational. It has truly inspired me to no matter how stressed I may be I can always go down to the gym and relieve my stress while gaining a benefit as well.…
