Personal Narrative: My Comparative Religions
When a person is born, they are usually subjected to one religion and most of the time they remain in that one religion their entire life, never experiencing another religion and only imagining what it is like. For my final project for my Comparative Religions class I was able to visit two houses of worship for two religions that were not my own and it really changed my whole view on religion as a whole. I experienced new forms of worship, ideas of the afterlife, and how much religion can really bring a whole community together. I chose to visit a Jewish synagogue and a Baptist church. I am a Catholic so both of these experiences were very different. I am very grateful I was able to be able to experience such a new outlook on religion as a …show more content…
I almost drove right past the place because it looked like most of the other buildings. When I got inside everyone was grouped in the lobby area all talking to each other. This is where I met my docent, Harve Bubalow. A docent is a knowledgeable person of the Jewish religion who guides visitors and shows them around the synagogue and shows them other things about the service and worship. The interior of the synagogue was a very relaxed and comfortable setting. There was a type of shop set up in the synagogue and there were several large meeting rooms. The main worship center was located in the middle of the synagogue. It had several rows of comfortable padded chairs and as I learned the rows are set up and have a certain tilt to them in order to put the Torah as the center of attention. The Torah has the first five books of the Hebrew Bible. As we got in and got settled I looked around the worship room and I noticed several things that seemed important to the Jewish religion. I noticed the Ark, which contains the Torah. It is called the Ark because when Moses received the Ten Commandments he built a container for it called the Ark. Next to the Ark there was a flame that I learned was always burning, an eternal …show more content…
For starters, everything was sung or chanted, and most of it was sung or chanted in Hebrew, because the Torah was written in Hebrew. Even the readings from the Torah were chanted. In Catholicism, there are certain songs that everyone in attendance will sing, and there is no Bible reading in Latin, even though the Bible was written in Latin. Next, I noticed how the books for people attending the service to use to keep pace with what was going on, was read from right to left. My docent told me that this was because all pieces of literature written in Hebrew were read from right to left. Something that was similar to the Catholic Church was how in the church the priest will talk for about 30 minutes about a passage from the Bible, this is called the Homily. During the worship service in the synagogue the Rabbi talked about one of the Torah passages and compared it to real life situations to help people understand it and apply it to their own life, just like in the Catholic Church. At about the midpoint of the service they took out the Torah. I noticed how carefully they treated the Torah. It was treated with even more respect than the Bible in Catholicism. It had a cover on it because people are not allowed to touch it because of how much it takes to make just one

I never thought how interesting it would be to visit a different place of worship besides Christianity. Since the day I was born I’ve been a Christian and whatever anyone else believes in is wrong and that they are going to hell if they don’t believe in Christianity. About 3 years ago I visited the International Buddhist Progress Society a Buddhist temple in Naperville. Buddhism from what I learned looks more like a way of life or guidelines to it rather than a religion. Buddhism tells you how you could live life better but doesn’t scare you with the prospect of hell instead you live with ignorance. My own history with Christianity still made me doubt or fear the conquences of going to this temple. Part of me believed that I be punished by…

I could relate our study in class and view it in a practical way. The way it Jews followed their religion is completely opposite to that of mine. The first aspect is that they believe in the existence of one God while we believe in the existence of many Gods and Goddesses. Secondly, we do not read out our holy books in the manner that Jewish people do. Even when we do read out the books the main priest reads it and the others just listen to them. The books are not used by every single person. Yes, relics hold a great importance in my religion as well. I found out that the Jews not only follow the Torah, but they live in it. The significance of the Torah, the relics, and the festivals for them amused me. When I got into talking with a Jew I understood how much it meant for them to follow God. How the people have understood the Torah and its teachings were remarkable. I was amazed that even with all the injustice and suffering the Jews have suffered; their faith in God has not shaken. They believe in their God and trust that one day all will be…

I am a Jew! Due to that very important fact, some parts of my life were harder than it would have been if I was a Christian or Catholic. But using my faith in myself and my religion I was able to persevere myself. A good quote that describes myself is from a Kelly Clarkson song “What doesn't kill you makes you stronger, Stand a little taller, Doesn't mean I'm lonely when I'm alone”. I always think of that song whenever something bad happens that makes me question myself, my friends, or my beliefs. I believe that simple words and beliefs don’t define a person, but their actions towards others do.…

My family of orientation is pretty blended, but stayed the same throughout most of my childhood. My family of orientation consisted of my mother, step father (who I call my dad), my half brother, and half sister. My mother married by step father when I was five years old and he was married to my mom until I was about seventeen years old. I took the Family of origin expressive atmosphere scale test and my score was very high, but that confuses me just a little bit. I feel like my family wasn’t as expressive as I wanted them to be growing up. If they were expressive though, it was only because they were angry at one another. If my siblings and I disagreed with my parents, we would be told we were wrong. My mom, at least, has gotten better at…

My collage is Freedom of Religion, why I chose this freedom is because everyone has a religion, even though some people don’t choose to have a religion, it is important to them. ¨With or without religion, you would have good people doing good things and evil people doing evil things. But for good people to do evil things, that takes religion.¨ by Steven Weinberg. I chose this quote because anyone can have a religion it does not matter what kind of race they are, gender, or how they look. They choose what to believe in not what others believe in. Not everyone will believe in God, others may believe in something else and they cannot change that.…

Being Jewish in a non-Jewish world can be a struggle, especially for a teenager. There are times when you have to make choices between celebrating what makes you unique and special and trying to fit in with everyone else. To some, it might be easier to just be like everyone else, to conform, and to ignore their Jewish identity and the Jewish values that go along with living and being Torah, but is this right? Personally, I feel that in a world with rising anti-Semitism, increasing hate crimes against Jews, and negative sentiments expressed towards Israel, that it is my role to be more active as a Jew. It is important to me to embrace what it means to be a Jew in today’s world and to be comfortable representing this amongst people who are different from myself. If the Jewish message is that everyone is…

I am most excited to simply meet people at the University of Notre Dame. Peers, professors, alumni with varying religious beliefs, political views, and cultural backgrounds. It is the people farthest from me in geography, culture, and ideology that intrigue and challenge me the most. I am constantly attempting to step into their shoes or view the world through their lens. I am captivated by the notion that how I walk in my shoes or how I view the world around me has implications for people near and far from me.…

The person I choice to interview this week just like last week is also someone I turn to when I am faced with questions and concerns regarding all of my biblical classes and sometimes just personal spiritual questions. That person is my pastor and my father in law who has been a southern Baptist preacher for over thirty years. Of those thirty years he has only been pastor of two churches both, which have been very successful while he was and is presently the pastor. When we talk about anything and everything overall we have a great relationship. I choose to interview him this week because I knew he would be able to show me the more experienced side of his ministry because of his years of serving the lord.…

How pleasant one looked on Sunday transpired as my Mother’s definition of religion, for she always had us corresponding dresses she had made, in different colors and clothed to the hilt; with pristine bonnets, fluffy petticoats, matching purses, white gloves, lace socks, and patent leather shoes. Subsequently, our family occurred excessively dressed on numerous Easter Sundays! Furthermore, even in the summertime she would fashion interchangeable matching outfits for all of us. Yes, back then, generally all events revolved around church, like the majority of other respectable southern people. Unfalteringly, during my Dad’s younger years, my grandfather would travel with him and my uncles to political rallies; whereupon they would sing for the crowds. Along with singing at church functions, revivals, and other social events, all added to the motivation of why my Dad loved entertaining and all and sundry loved Mr. Alfred and his guitar. Nevertheless, even though my Dad came from a sizeable, extremely religious family, (eighteen brothers and sisters that…
