Personal Narrative: I Am Relevant In A National Honor Society
Your hand is full of coins that are worth different values, but you only choose those with higher worth. You throw the rest on the floor or put them aside for someone else to find. Little did you know that with time those coins you left for someone else to have, made them worth more than what they used to be. My life was like a penny, not worth much to others but with help of others the bronze coin became much more than the silver coins.
Having a big family can sometimes be a good thing, but in my case it is not something I am proud of. Being one of the youngest out of my whole family I have been put down and told I was not good enough compared to my other cousins. I would cry in my room and think to myself will I ever be good enough in their eyes? As I got older and saw the skills I was capable of, I became determined to be as important as everyone else maybe even better. I accomplished high grades since my elementary years, I was inducted to the National Honor Society, and I am in the first percentile of my class. Although, I was told I will never be better I proved my aunts, uncles, and cousins wrong. At this point, I have accomplished more than any of my family members have.

In my case, I see it as giving everything your all at what you do. In my household family I am considered to be bright and known to always receive excellent grades, but in school everything changes. I am not as intelligent as everyone else, but what I do have is that I do not give up. My peers seem to get devastated from failing grades and not having the highest average as they hoped for. I, myself see failure as a motivation to never give up. Even when I feel like I have given my all into a goal I continue to move forward to get even further. I like to reach for the sky even if it seems

“The hardest obstacle to overcome in any leadership position is getting past the apathy to get people involved in the process to get things done…The greatest enemy to accomplishment is apathy” (Burke). National Honor Society upholds its members to have 4 important values. These being scholarship, character, leadership, and service. Leadership, in my opinion, is a very important aspect in National Honors Society because you are expected to be a role model by positively inspiring people around you. This quote stuck out because it says that inspiring people is a way to overcome obstacles in leadership. If you inspire people and make them get rid of their apathy, you can overcome stalling in the process and reach accomplishment.…

My first reason why family is important to my life is because they have always been there for me. Many of my peers succeed at certain sports or even various classes like English or Calculus. Although, I did struggle with my other activities and curriculum classes, family has always been there. Throughout middle school and high school, I competed with my friend for captain of the soccer team. I didn’t beat him until eighth grade when my hard work finally paid off. Because of this, I now realize how dedication and persistence can help someone achieve one’s goals. If I never decided to join the soccer team and compete for first captain, I wouldn’t have had the opportunity to challenge myself and gain the skills and characteristics that would benefit me throughout the rest of my life, if it had not been for my family pushing me to excel.…

When I was a National Honor Society Member at my High School, we were able to work with a program called VIP Soccer in which volunteers played with and taught special needs children the game of soccer. It was actually my favorite event within our organization especially when we got to see how happy each child was and the smiles on their parents’ faces when they saw that their son or daughter was having fun. Eventually, I was so inspired by this movement that I actually started a similar program but at my local golf club. How I got this started was actually by meeting the owner of the golf club, and the parents of my teammates on my school golf team. After a couple of months of planning and talking to more interested volunteers, I was finally…

Joining the Honors college did not cross my mind for a long time in my research of Appalachian. I did not see myself capable of thriving within a possibly contentious community of highly intelligent people. However, as the deadlines began to tick down and the pressures of school were put on blast, I began to realize that the honors college was my strongest option. Since I was very little, competition and a healthy amount of academic pressure have brought out the best in me. Rather than wilting under the intensity, I rise up ready to face the challenges thrown my way. The honors college will stimulate my growth towards intellectual, personal, and professional achievement utilizing both friendly competition and social proliferation.…

My life started on December 13, 1999 In Ahoskie, North Carolina. I was born at 12 p.m. As my family would tell it was a very different day for everyone. I was my mom’s first born child and the same for my dad. I really don’t remember much about my childhood. The furthest back I remember is like 4th grade way back when I made my mother proud. I had straight A’s and I never had a single write up. I always tried to do the best I could to get through the years and I did well until the sixth grade.…

I am deeply honored with the opportunity to become a member of National Honors Society. As a student with a 4.3 grade point average, this has always been something I have looked forward to. My grades are my top priority. Classmates in school admire me and call me “smart”, I, in the other hand, do not think of myself as smart. To be more precise, I think of myself as a student that has taken the opportunities given and has used them wisely. I have gave every class my best, and have tried to do all things to the best of my ability. I feel that I am a hard worker. I am a one hundred percent dedicated to anything I am a part of.…

I am deeply honored to be among the great students who are being considered for the National Honor Society. Being nominated to be a member of the national honor society shows me that I have achieved my goal to work as hard as I possibly can to stand out among my class mates academically. I feel that this organization does great things, and I’m happy I can play a role in helping the impression that is made. The National Honor Society is known for recognizing students with outstanding grades and commendable characters; I feel that I have both. Last quarter I received a 3.5. Personally, I believe that I not only embody the four pillars of the National Honor Society, but try to instill these character traits into others in order to better both them and the MATES community as a whole. As reflected by my grades and the privilege of applying to the MATES NHS chapter, scholarship is something that I value heavily, as I give 100% at everything I do, whether that be a game in gym or a hard test, and even though I may not be perfect I try my hardest to learn from my mistakes and improve both academically and personally. Furthermore I am both trustworthy and responsible, as I have never forgotten any homework throughout my career at MATES. I also enjoy helping others, which is why I volunteer at the library to be a reading…
