Personal Narrative: Growing Up In A Substandard Socioeconomic Environment
Growing up as the oldest child of two first generation immigrants from differing backgrounds, I was met with many challenges that come with living in a substandard socioeconomic environment. For majority of my life my parents were both completing their education and working full time jobs, while raising five kids. With minimal extended family support and being the oldest I took on the role of secondary caregiver of my siblings, as a way to help shoulder my parents burdens. This became more so when my father was diagnosed with prostate cancer and the medical expenses pushed us further into poverty. Thankfully government assistance was afforded to us. Going into my freshmen year of high school my father passed his medical board exams and was

When asked to write about a childhood experience most people think of the time they lost their first tooth when they were 6, or about the time they started school when they were 5, however, I’m going to write about summer. It wasn’t just any summer it was the summer that I went to the lake with my Dad and Papa. I was about 4 and couldn’t be any more excited about what was going to happen…

She was born on a busy summer night on September 13th 1918 in Brookline, Massachusetts. I always had the feeling that Rosie was a little different from the rest of us. On the day of her birth the midwife arrived late, and my theory is that this action deprived her brain of oxygen. We were proven right when she failed to advance from kindergarten and was deemed to suffer from intellectual disabilities. When this happened our parents began to conceal their third child from society.…

I came from a poor, but close-knit, immigrant family that through luck and sacrifice rose to upper class too quickly. Almost a decade after amassing this mismanaged wealth, it was squandered and became the cause for many of the problems in the family, including drug dependency, abuse, and the total loss of unity that we enjoyed before the money came in faster than it could be spend. By the time I was 18, I joined the Air Force to carve my own path in life. In hindsight it’s clear now how fucked we were from the…

A life in the ghetto is no life at all. Especially in Molesville, Pennsylvania, a town left in the dust by modern society. Ever since I can remember my mother has been sick, this terrible place is the cause. With little sanitation the streets are rat infested and the poor die young. We had not had enough money, when my father left us, to afford food to live with, let alone go get help from a doctor. After my mother’s pregnancies she gradually became more and more sick. I thought my mother was in pain from the way she sat on her bed constantly crying. That theory was proven one day when her will to fight died. She transformed into a being of hatred. Her heart turned as black as the night. She was different, the mother I once knew dead. Although I knew she was still there, deep, deep down waiting for me to rescue her from herself. In almost an instant I decided the only way to save her was to earn the money for…

As most children grow up, they are aware of their surroundings and take in everything they can understand which adds to their personality and their structure of life. As a child I developed at a level more advanced than the children around me. I learned to use a computer at the age of 3 years old. I read at an 8th-9th grade level while in the 5th grade. In addition, I could handle complex situations better than a average elementary student. The mindset I had as a child unlocked new doors for me. For example, I was not afraid to try new things and accept the lessons that came along with new opportunities. Also, I learned from my parents that going down the path of success isn’t always easy. Lastly, I experienced that life is filled with…

Since I grew up in a family with an abusive father, my response to conflict differs from most people. My father resolved conflict by shouting, degrading, and often physically abusing the other person. My mother’s response to conflict was to try to settle a compromise or walk away until her own frustration was no longer there. I think based off the conflict responses I observed growing up, my responses are a mixture of my parents. When in an intense argument with someone, I attack their character and then silence them out. Family members play a big part in how we resolve conflicts, because a good portion of our lives begin by us spending time with and watching our relatives. We, as a society, adapt skills and mannerisms from those closest to…

Growing up, I was unalike from other kids, I was "imaginative". During class, I would always by myself, writing bizarre stories with preposterous characters and with an unpredictable plot, while the other kids were playing with their friends. Many of my classmates would be entertained by loony stories, while other kids thought that I was just some lonely nitwit writing absurd stories to make up for not having any friends. In that year I was relocated to a different school, which I didn't want to go because I didn't have any friends at the school, I was currently attending and it would be much more difficult to make new friends. In the following year, I was still that shy girl in the back of the classroom not interacting with anybody, but it…

When deciding if I was affluent I put a lot of thought into this. I could be considered affluent to one who does not have any money at all, or no place to call home, but I do not consider myself to be affluent. I am a college student who was thankfully blessed with a full tuition scholarship. With preparing myself for the next chapter of my life next fall, I wonder how I will ever pay for my bachelors degree. I think that in America a lot of people live like this they spend so much money to get a degree that has left them in a great amount of debt. They just hope that one day they will become an affluent person. At least that is my dream. It is an American dream to live life with not worry on costly expenses. The United States is considered…

Most children develop pretty similarly. They are born, they learn to crawl then walk and then run. My life didn’t start that way. I was born in February of 1994 in Redwood City, California to two loving parents. My parents were in their late twenties when they had me and were anxious to start a family. They had been married for seven years by the time I was born so I was brought into a very stable environment. Although my mother had taken good care of herself throughout her pregnancy, my health upon birth was not what they expected it to be. My mother recalls seeing me for the first and asking the nurse what was on my back. It was soon realized that I had a closed meingocele on the lower section of my back meaning that I had Spina Bifida.…

An event that marked my transition from childhood to adulthood would be the day I moved to the United States From Dominican Republic four years ago. I was fourteen years old when my family and I decided to change our lives. My mother always wanted a better future for our family., therefore she decided this would be the best for all of us. At first it was indubitable difficult for me to become accustomed to a new country, leaving the rest of my family behind. A country where I was required to learn a new language and learn so many new things to improve not only the way I was in school but also learn how to improve myself internally. It was a challenge, but I am proud to say that even if I had atrocious days where people criticized me by reason…

My family was never a rich family to begin with. My father, mother, and I migrated from Dominican Republic in 1998, following my father’s side of the family to create a better life for themselves and their kids in the near or far future. Like most families who’ve come to a new country without a dime, my parents tried to get jobs to get us an apartment just for ourselves. The struggle they had gone through to get to where I am today is unbelievable, and I am so grateful for everything they have done. During my life, my parents have had to go though some hardships with the downpour of the economy after 9/11, to my dad getting sick and not being able to work for a couple of months.…

All my life I’ve been told that the world is wrong that there is so much injustice and inequality. But how do I know the world is wrong if I’ve never known it been right?... How do I know the sky blue not violet nor orange nor scarlet? I only know its blue because that is what I’ve be told. All us accept most what we have been told and we rarely questioning why? Why is the world wrong? why is there so much injustice and inequality? Why is sky blue? We have been brought up to accept the ideas of the majority but never fully understanding the truth. While we have differing views of right and wrong but my question can we right those wrongs or do those who suffer injustice and inequality just unlucky?…
